Free basic photo editing software?

I was just curious if anyone knows of any free basic photo editing software that I could download online. I am not looking to do the Limewire thing, I just want something basic that I can convert color pics to black and white. I havn't done a whole lot of this so any help would be appreciated.

I believe Picasa has some basic (but decent) editing functions to it, and I'm sure has conversion to black/white. I haven't used Picasa for anything more than galleries, though.

Gimp

Gimp is pretty confusing IMO. I'd suggest picnik.com for very simple things like you have have mentioned. Picnik is actually pretty cool and very intuitive. I sometimes use it when I need to watermark something fast.

Thanks for the input guys. I actually was looking at photoshop today to see how much the basic one was and saw they have a free online service. I signed up for that, so i will see how it goes. So far so good, but havn't spent a ton of time on there yet.

Microsoft photo manager is pretty ok for doing some basic stuff or if you have a mac, there's probably an even better programme already on your computer.
