We were down Lake Canyon just over a week ago.... Odd to read that yesterday. <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/507801.jpg" alt="Upload">

I saw this artical and was thinking about posting if anybody has seen a chunk of rock fall. The one that I read had some stories of people being there when a huge piece came off the wall and 8 to 10 foot waves follow after the fall.

I saw a slab fall once at Powell, it didn't fall into the water but was trippy as hell. It was probably only 30-40 feet across, loud and impressive.

On a previous trip about 3 yrs ago we were caught in a storm and were just about to take refuge on the shore when we saw a flash flood coming off a cliff carrying boulders as big as 20" dia. That was pretty scary.

Because the 'passed' the boaters and kept going in another direction. I'm sure nothing was wrong when they passed one another, they weren't there to see the rock chunk fall on the boat.

Yes, you pass people in narrow canyons all the time. Standard practice is to slow down, smile and wave.

I LOVE Powell, my home land, raised there most my life. <BR> <BR>I see a lot of rock slabs that look like they ought to fall some day, but i never have SEEN one fall in my life... naturally anyway ;). Deffinately bad luck... I wonder if the park service will knock over potential threats (rocks) after this, kind of how avalanches are purposely caused in some mountainous regions for safety. I bet they wont though, since it is such a freak accident, and since it would be "un-natural" to purposely knock off boulders and slabs <BR> <BR>My friends and i pushed one off a cliff in the dessert nearly a mile from my home. though the slab was only about 10ft x 4ft x 4ft or so, the rock made a loud enough noise that my dad heard it from the house and rushed out on the 3-wheeler to check up on us. (it probably took 2 hours to push it off too)... i look back on it now with stupidity, especially in light of this incidence (... but it still is a "fun" memory...)
