looking for good water near Columbus OH this weekend
I am planning a trip from Erie PA to the Columbus area with my crew this weekend and need to know what you all think for some good water. I was looking at.
Rocky fork lake Paint Creek lake William H. Harsha Caesar creek lake we will mostly be surfing. im not a big fan of crouds but i would think this time of the year it shouldnt be too bad?? we had planned on going to Summersville WV but they are calling for rain all weekend. thanks for your help |
Those are over an hour from Columbus.
Griggs is where the better riders in Columbus ride Alum creek north of Columbus can get busy, but should be empty this time of the year. |
Griggs is where most people ride but it isn't very big and surfing is frowned upon there. I would try Alum Creek.

I'm okay with traveling the distance. anywhere between Columbus and Cincinnati
|
Did not know surfing was frowned upon there. We surf every week mostly late till dark.
Deer Creek is not bad |
How's Buckeye Lake these days? Used to go there when I was a kid.
|
I think buckeye is very shallow. not good for surfing.

Griggs is in the center of Columbus; lots of wakeboarders. I boated there a lot until 2009 when I moved a little north...didn't see any surfing there then but it has become more popular here since then, so I'm sure you can. I ride at O'Shaughnessy Resevoir. Size is fairly comparable to Griggs. Lots of surfing there and I've never seen the Ranger give anyone an issue for it; we surf more than board, I've surfed right by the Ranger in a comp vest without a 2nd look from him. Buckeye Lake is a crap hole. Shallow and good place to ride if you are looking to damage all of your underwater gear. Indian Lake isn't too far either...slightly cleaner than Buckeye but even more likely to end your day with your boat towed in with thousands in damage. Great thing about Griggs/O'Shaughnessy is no tubes, no PWC's, no boats over 22', 40MPH limit...really helps limit the idiots on the water. |
Close is a relative term. To me an extra hour is nothing. We were planning on 5.5 hours to summersville so Cincinnati is 5 hours form me the lakes you mentioned are 3.75 to 4 hours. Again another hour is close in my opinion. I think we may hit alum on the way down but I keep looking at rocky fork and it seems good (on paper) any opinions on rocky fork or William h harsha.

Griggs is pretty much the only spot around Columbus with consistently good water for wakeboarding. If we are going to surf, we go to alum creek or O'shaunessey so we don't ruin the griggs water for everybody else.
|
not to worry boys we will not be heading to Griggs, going to check out Alum on the way. still would like to hear some other options. i have a enzo 230 so does that mean O'shaunessey is out???

O'shaunessey or Griggs are both pretty dead this time of year plus its a home game. Nobody should cry over 12inches :)
