Which boat to buy
Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to the boat game but have spent hours searching this forum and others and still can't decide what to buy. I want a boat for surfing only with family and friends. I would like to keep it under 45k so brand new is out of the question. I have been looking at a few different 2011 epic 23v's but want to hear what you guys think before I pull the trigger. I don't mind putting sacs in lockers etc... But would like to keep the interior free of bags/weights. What do you guys recommend ? Any leads on a used boat that fits my budget ? Thanks, Travis. |
IMO Epics do not make good surf boats. Too steep, no push and sharp transitions.
|
Thanks for the feedback, what do you recommend ?
|
There are a few real good wakesurf boats. Not sure how many are in your price range. The Supreme V226 starts at a lower price so should be easier to find newer. Tige's have few models that work real well. probably could find some older models that would fit your range. Sanger V215 or V237 great surf boats. I have a V215. V215 has a lower freeboard so for some it isn't as good. Never had a problem with mine just have to be careful. These boats make great wakes on both sides with similar weight.

What about the MB line up ?
|
I have no real experience but have seen some recent video and pictures that look good.

Here are some good surf boats that I think you can get around $45K or a little less:
Centurion 2009-2010 Avalanche 2008 Enzo 230/240 Tige 2008 2009 22 Ve 2008 24 Ve 2008-2010 Sanger 237 2010 (maybe 2011) Supreme 226 2008-2009 Malibu LSV 23 |
Don't count out the Supreme v232 as well - I have one and with proper weight and prop throws a wave close to a v226, way better than the Avy or Sanger's IMO. And you might be able to find a new 2010 out there close to your price.

Thanks for the replays guys.

There are three on my website . . .
http://www.hillside-honda.com/photog...ATER/album.asp I have three friends with Avy's and one with an Enzo 230 and I can sink them! Plus you won't have to worry about taking water in the deck vents - we had to run three bilge pumps in the Enzo's back in the Boardstock days. |

Sorry for the D-Up - laptop issues I guess

I would also add an MB in your list of boats to consider. There are some pictures of the wave in this link.
http://www.wakeworld.com/forum/showthread.php?t=790915 Make sure you test drive the Centurion boats with sideswipe exhaust. It is too loud for some. |
How are MB's for quality ? They do appeal because there is a dealer close to my house.
What model of MB would you recommend for the best surf and still stay under the 45k mark (used)? Like I said I don't want any sacs where they are visable in the boat but don't mind filling compartment and under the seat to get the proper ride. Thanks again for the reply's, keep them coming !! |
The MB Tomcat 21 is a great surfboat, BUT you have to have the trim tab. I have a lot of experience behind the boat and you cant get a clean lip without the trim tab. My girlfriend's family has one without the trim tab and we can not get it clean.
Put a 1100lbs sac in the back locker with the stock ballast for a good wave, but add a 450lbs bag on the side seat and another in the bow for an amazing wave. The boat sits so high that it can take the weight easily. The boat handles great and the quality is awesome for the price. There is also so much room when you work on the engine |
you can put the 450lbs under the side seat and under the bow cushion. there is plenty of room. I just usually put them on top because the crew is small and i am lazy
|
I want to have a look at the B52-23 myself. I really like the quick fill 1100# ballast. I would probably plumb in another 750# sac in each locker and that would be enough for a very nice wave with all of the ballast hidden.
If you surf the port side only like we do then an SV230 Enzo is a great choice as well (that is what I own). I do not have the side swipe exhaust (too loud for my likings) so I got a custom 1850# sac made for the port side locker. I also have a 400# sac under the starboard side seat behind the driver. Our wave is awesome. No sacs on the seats or platform and a large crew is not required. Actually our wave is crazy when we add a bunch of people. I prefer it with a driver and two other passengers max. |
I have a B52-21 that works well on both sides. I use a 400# sac in the locker side i'm riding and it is a nice clean face. As far as boat quality MB puts out the best bang for the buck. You could find a newer MB for that price no poblem.

how is the wave on the b52 vs the f 21?
|
Is there any years/models you guys tend to stay away from on the MB's ?
|
I have never been behind a F21 but i hear that it is very similar. I have rode behind a F23 but i like the B52-21 over it and i hear the B52-23 is the best over all MBs for surfing.
And to (93lxt) the newer wide body MB are the ones to look at. |
Anybody have a line on a used b52 or enzo ?
Any places to check for used boats other that onlyinboards.com ? |
all of craigslist, ebay, olingermarine.com, boulder boats

Centuioncrew.com in the classifieds:
ksl.com classifieds are popular for mostly Utah, but many in Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona post on it. Enzos http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...d=&search=enzo http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...d=&search=enzo http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...d=&search=enzo http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...d=&search=enzo Avy's: I can personally vouch for this one, My buddy's. Saced out and ready to go http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...arch=Avalanche http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...arch=Avalanche Good luck |
Matt,
Thanks allot for the reply !! I really like your buddy's avy and the second enzo you posted. What i the big differences between an Enzo and an Avy ? ( I am not familiar with Centrion at all) Thanks, Travis. |
I know they'll take a lot less for this MB than what they're asking:

Have experience with both MB and Centurion and if choosing between brands would choose an Enzo every time. I think you'll be paying a bit more for Centurion though.
|
Trav, Centurions are known for their surf waves. Enzo's are king of the hill when saced out. Avy's are awesome as well and throw off excellent goofy waves. If Enzo's are out of the ball park ($) Avy's are next in line. Kris has his dialed in for a regular wave. I hate to see him sell it cause I've had so much fun on his. By all means give him a jingle and he'll he more than happy to tell ya all about it.
