Anybody ever ride a ski with releasable bindings like on Snow Skis?

These are really expensive but they have the best of both worlds. They offer the most support but also will release on a hard fall for safety.

Any thoughts?

http://www.jagersport.com/FMC662004_web.wmv
http://www.jagersport.com/doublesix.htm
Once you go to hard shells, you'll never go back. The performance is one good reason, but the comfort is really the best part. Ski all day without your feet cramping. Worth every bit of money.

I personally ski with a Ski-Tec front hardshell and an RTP. If you ski with double boots, this probably isn't the best setup. I do know some people though that ski with a front Ski-Tec and a loose rubber boot in the rear. For the most part, they have never had any issues releasing from one but not the other.

If you go with double hard shells, Be Careful. Double hard shells don't necessarily equate to less risk of injury. the current design of the fogman and goode binding attach your two bindings to a single plate which velcros to your ski. The release act by the release of the velcro. The problem with this design in the bindings often won't release in a hard out the front. This causes a lot of compression on the front shin and ankle. I think the jager design you're showing above looks really cool and should fix a lot of these problems. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone that actually skis these so I can't comment on their true functionality. My biggest issue with Jager's bindings is the use of hockey bindings. These have always seemed a little heavy and "clunky" looking compared to the lighter roller blade bindings used by Ski Tec, Goode, and Fogman. That's really just a personal opinion though.

Good luck with the search. Hard shells are truly worth every penny. Be careful though, because you will never go back to a soft boot. If you try the Jager bindings, post a review with your opinions.
- A.J.

I don't agree. I don't like hardshells. I've got the new HO Approach, I think they are the best of both worlds.

Nick - The Approach seems to be a very hit or miss binding. People either love or hate them. Most people I know find them too restrictive. I skied with a gentleman the other day though that had a pretty cool setup. He had taken his rear approach apart and replaced the tongue with the tongue from an HO Union binding. He really loved the customization and said it relieved a lot of the pressure across the top of his foot/ front of his ankle when getting forward on the ski.

As a slight update to the post above, I got to try on a Jager binding first hand this weekend. I tried on the Type 9 front binding, basically a hockey binding with some roller blade straps on it. It overall reaffirmed my feeling that the binding felt a little too heavy and bulky. The strap setup also allowed a little too much flex across the opening over the foot when flexing the ankle forward. This could probably be fixed by adding an additional buckle or some zip ties. Looking at the hardware used on the H202-F9WCS Setup, the build was a little primitive and could probably be bested by anyone with a little experience in a sheetmetal shop in a few hours. Note that this was the trick ski setup though and not the double boot slalom setup, although both share similar boot designs.

I still think Jager is on to something with the doublesix design, I only wish he would stop using the hockey boots and switch to a boot more similar to SkiTec and Goode.

I didn't mention that I like restrictive bindings. I feel the Approach gives me the best feel for my ski (D3 X5) without going to a total hard boot system. I don't like any of the release mechanisms on the hard shell setup. I have had the Approaches for a full season now and haven't had a fall where I have or should have released yet, so the boots restrictive tendencies haven't shown yet.

And you would have to chase the ski every time they ejected you.
