Unfortunatly I cant afford a wakeboard boat like most of u guys. I just got into boating last year and figured I pickup a cheap boat and see if I like boating/watersports. Well I love it. But still cant get the boat of my dreams yet so i have to make do with what I have. I have already learned how to get up and move around on the wakeboard with my boat which is a larson with a 70hp johnson pitched for skiing. It actually does better than I though. So, how can i get a bigger wake with an outboard? Would a certain area in the trim help etc.?
Thanks!!

Not sure what to tell you man, if you add weight it will bog down on you. Just keep practicing your edging technique. If you were in AZ you come with my crew and pay for gas. With the new boat payment I'm gonna need some extra people to pay for gas, lol!

Keep an out there in Louisiana for Jean LaFitte, I heard he's got a bad ass boat down in there in tha area!

just have fun being behind the boat, but accept the fact that you won't get much of wake with that setup. Have you tried a wakeskate? You don't really need a big wake for that.

(Message edited by Rich_G on May 04, 2006)

I started with a SeaRay outboard and the wake was pretty decent but far from WOW. It was a great boat to learn on and we had a ton of fun with it. Main thing is just go learn the basics well. Learn edging, learn surface tricks, get your rotations down well and have fun. Move to the next boat when it's right.

You'll need more of a boat/wake for big inverts but for now you way better off then the person watching from shore :-)

I started behind a 70hp fish/ski boat. We had so much fun on that boat it was amazing. The wake that we had was not very good at all you can play with the trim and help things out a little but really just have fun. If you learn all of the basics and still love the sport look at buying something else or just meet up with some guys that have wakeboard boats and give them some gas money. That is by far the cheapest way to do it.
I also had a Sea Ray OB, and it was pretty fun to learn behind. If you are just learning, the first time you edge in towards a big wakeboat wake...it can be intimidating at first.

One thing I used to do that seemed to help the wake was to back it down the ramp, then get in the water and unscrew the plug and let a little water in. It makes the wake roll a little fatter and smoother.

You're not gona really be able to have a good wake. I had an outboard with a 200. I would trim the engine and I aded 800lbs in fatsacs. The wake was pretty good but the boat wouldnt hold speed at all. With a 70 hp I dont know what to tell you cuz mine could arely get out of the hole and it was a 200.

Shannon, what you can do to make a bigger wake is SAVE YOUR MONEY, and buy a used inboard in the future. You will end up running your 70hp motor into the ground for not much more wake and then will be stuck on the dock. Just get comfortable edging, learn the ollie, get comfortable riding switch, etc..

Enjoy being on the water. Introduce yourself to a crew of wakeboarders at your local spot. Most are totally pumped on getting new people to the sport behind a wakeboard boat especially when you show you are willing to throw $20 to the cause. It truly is an entirely different sport behind a wakeboat, but for now just get out there catch some rays and have a good time. Good luck and enjoy.

Shannon do you ever come up to the Jackson, MS area? If so you could ride with me and my crew, we always welcome new people.

I boarded behind an outboard for about 6 years and learnt how to do backrolls and tantrums. It doesn't take much of a wake at all to do a backroll. Just enjoy. I totally did.

It could be worse. One of my fraternity brothers used to board behind a johnboat with a 15hp outboard. I dont know how he even got up behind the thing.
