i know to cut in, let go with my backhand and look at the shore, but how hard do i need to throw my head?

not hard, the thign that helped me finally land these was to cut hard (knees bent), then before the wake stand super tall, let off your edge, as you hit the wake or before drop the back hand and at the wake sorta as you simutaniously hit the wake square up and throw your head...
make sure you keep your eyes open since you can spot most of the landing for this trick
good luck

Not much at all.I use my head for timing. I watch the wake on the way in, and start to turn my head coming out of the dish. By the time My head has turned to look over my back shoulder, I am just at the top of the wake.
The hardest part of learning the tantrum for me was waiting to get my pop. Turning my head in a controlled fashion not only helped my timing, but has also alowed me to take the trick higher and slower.
