video editing software?

I would like to edit/produce better videos. Not professional level. Just better than what comes off the camera in MP4 format. Any recommendations?

diamonddad 12-29-2010 12:17 PM

BTW, Movie Maker is on my PC but its kind of crap plus it does not understand MP4 so its not a great option.

dakid 12-30-2010 1:51 PM

adobe premiere elements

adamdodd 12-30-2010 2:32 PM

final cut pro express

Get a mac and get FCP express or imovie

duramat 12-30-2010 2:33 PM

X2 on the Adobe Elements, I paid something like $100 at Best Buy for the program. Im still tinkering around with it to figure it out.

op asks for a software recommendation and someone says a whole new computer is the answer. hah!

duramat 12-30-2010 3:10 PM

LOL he may just need one Joe :D My laptop has crashed many times, and the my memory has dissapeared to all the new vids from outings LOL A beefier system may be needed LOL

dakid 12-30-2010 3:15 PM

i'm surprised it took a fanboy this long to post "get a mac!" ;)

adamdodd 12-30-2010 6:28 PM

If you get a mac it will come with imovie and you will never look back... Not sure why Joe is a mac hater..

diamonddad 12-30-2010 6:40 PM

Thanks for all the pointers!

I will be using a PC because my work provides me a nice DELL notebook that they maintain.

Adobe Elements sounds like a winner. Hmm, should I get it combined with PhotoShop? I am thinking I could use that too.

Photoshop plus Premiere Elements: $110.

Premiere Elements: $75.

not sure how you got from my posts above that i'm a "mac hater" but i'm not a "mac hater" at all! i just find it funny that when someone asks a pc specific question, and a fanboi says, "get a mac!" i guess it's like that in wake. someone asks about an lf board and someone posts, "get a slingshot!"

dakid 12-30-2010 6:44 PM

dane, get 'em both!

jarrod 12-31-2010 6:47 AM

I just bought pinnacle studio 14. Easy as hell to use and you can do just about anything without ever cracking the manual. 75 bucks.

wakeboardingdad 12-31-2010 6:58 AM

Nice work duramat. What camera are you using for the water shots?

Here's some work I did with my Sony Vegas (non-pro) where I incorporated some green screen.

THANKS AKA! :D That whole vid was with my GoPro HD, Ive had a blast with it. Infact I use it pretty much all the time on the boat instead of the camcorder

Ive heard good things about Vegas, cool vid!

shawndoggy 01-01-2011 10:16 AM

For windows a cheap alternative is AVS video editor. Under $50 I think, and it will handle most any video codec you throw at it and also has all sorts of output options. Easy to use too.

For a "free" alternative you could always set up a Linux dual boot machine and use something like kdenlive.

+1 for Adobe

jarrod 01-05-2011 7:46 AM

Been wanting a helmet cam for quite some time. I simply can't have every toy I want! ugh! :) The vid of your kid holding the camera while he jumped is priceless!

Vegas is pretty powerful. Maybe too powerful for the average user. I am hardly tapping it's potential. I do admit that I do not care much for the title builder though. It's cool but cumbersome. Movie maker's is better and way more simple.

I'll check out your vid when I get home Jarrod. I like to steal.... uh hum... see other's style! :D

Here's a deal on Adobe. I think it's the same you guys talked about above.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...6&SID=FW9jh7ht

$69.99 after the mail-in rebate.

flattirenotube 01-23-2011 6:22 PM

Can anyone suggest any sort of training or "how-to" book for premier elements? I am looking at getting it and just don't want to go in and spend a lot of time messing around with it. I am going to use it for my gopro, and my imovie software from mac won't support the 60 fps that I want to use.

dakid 01-23-2011 6:43 PM

you can find a lot of tutorials on youtube. otherwise, look on adobe's site.

flattirenotube 01-23-2011 6:54 PM

Thanks Joe, will the Adobe be all I need to handle the 60 fps, and if i'm just looking to make fun videos for myself and friends?

gracenface 02-04-2011 4:20 PM

mac with final cut pro defiantly!

brettw 02-05-2011 8:16 AM

Might be a little late for this thread, but someone was recently telling me and swearing by photodex. Anyone use that before? Comparison with Adobe?

http://www.photodex.com/

I plan on learning one of these soon, and just want to spend my time learning the one that's best/easiest and that I'll continue using for awhile.
