Blake,

What's causing you to let go of the rope? Are you getting slack in your line, and not able to hold on to it once it pulls out? I've never heard of any other reason why someone wouldn't have the rope on a backroll attempt. The only advice I can give you is to do a normal wake-to-wake jump, and concentrate on being in total control the whole time. Once you make a normal controlled wake jump, cut back out, and then try your backroll. As far as handle positioning goes, I've had the best luck keeping the handle at my belly button, with my arms stretched out about halfway... hold that position throughout the entire rotation. The more you move your arms, the more chances you have to slow down your rotation, or allow yourself to get squirly. Try that, and see what happens. If you can think of anything else, that could cause you to lose the rope, post it, and maybe I, or someone else can help you out a little bit more. By the way, I like your name... There's not to many Blake's around.

-Blake
