Looking for a new board

Alright guys, Im lookin at ordering a new board in the next few days, what are your recommendations?!

Im, 5'6" about 145lbs, prefer the surf style, Looking to progress my airs, learn 180's and some switch riding this season.
Currently riding an 07 hyperlite coex 4.4

I would like a double thruster set up. Hoping to spend around $350-$400, but i have been eyeing a shred stixx comp 1 or Thresher. How about opinions on these boards?

brewkettle 05-03-2010 12:47 PM

i think those boards are out of your price range unless you find used.

ilikebeaverandboats 05-03-2010 12:54 PM

i just need to be able to justify it haha.

I love my stixx comp 1. I also have a coex, well, the coex is my wifes but I have ridden the coex some. There is a night and day difference between the two boards. The coex is slow-probably one of the slower boards I've ridden although I weigh 20 lbs more than you. I have had guys your size on the comp1 one and they have loved it as well. If you can find one for $400 then I would go for it, but not sure if you can get one that cheap. The comp is great for airs but maybe not the best for switch riding due to the tail design so that may affect your decision. Good luck.

At 145 the thresher is an awesome board. Some of the best airs I have ever seen have been on one. I love my comp1, amazing board. With your budget you most likely need to get used. I would say demo any boards you can.

ilikebeaverandboats 05-03-2010 1:50 PM

Im willing to spend the 700 bones to get the board, i just was aiming for cheaper. At this point im willing to order it, either thresher or comp 1, if the wait isnt real long.

Any one know how long the wait for a board is?
And anyone have anymore opinions on comp1 vs. thresher?

duffymahoney 05-03-2010 2:51 PM

The comp1 and thresher are slightly different. The comp1 will have more drive because it has 4 fins. The comp1 will need to be "pumped" to gain speed while the thresher will respond to both pumping and leaning. The comp1 will be faster. As long as you don't order a custom board they should ship quickly. The regular comp1 is awesome.

Go with 7+ fins - you have to surf at 30-40 mph :)

whats that like a triple thruster set up!?!?

Ok guys comp1 vs thresher. I weight 145lbs.

Well I guess that's my opinion:)

I think you could progress further on a comp1. But both are great boards.

duffymahoney 05-03-2010 4:39 PM

Surfdad are the rear fins directional? Both my comp1 and my elevation the rears aren't directional

I am really leaning towards the comp1, just wanna be sure before I drop the change.

The Module has been tested & it works unreal Just got the word from Branson Mo

duffymahoney 05-03-2010 4:46 PM

That is one cool looking board.

@ JL - Branson? What's up there? The Module is cool looking.

@ Joey - I was just making a joke - that board was a test bed for 3 different configurations thruster, quad and a twinzer - oh and I geuess it could technically be a twin and a 5 fin :) OH OH OH and a single! :) Just for the "wtf" value we installed all the fins and rode it. :) It went straight really well. :)

@ Duffy, when we played with the quads a few years ago, we followed the McGee formulas, so the rear's had a slight toe-in, yes. We had a few different trailer sets - I remember the pivots, but can't remember the other set...I think we also tried the 3.25 trailer - foiled both sides.

Counting down the days till my board gets here!!!

scottnaz 05-09-2010 11:29 AM

What did they give you as a lead time Joey?

ilikebeaverandboats 05-09-2010 3:59 PM

I was told it would be shipped on the 18th, and shippping would take about 4-5 days. You have one on order? They said they are picking up a bunch of them from the shaper on the 14th.

scottnaz 05-09-2010 4:21 PM

Nah, I don't have one on order, although it's been very tempting.....
I can't wait to see the pics of you guys riding these boards.

I just realized you are in AZ too, where do you normally ride?

ilikebeaverandboats 05-09-2010 10:17 PM

Yea thats how i was, right around finals this semester I caved and just had to buy the board. Pretty much only go to saguaro these days. what about you?

scottnaz 05-10-2010 6:21 PM

I picked up a new TWP - Walker signature board last summer, so I think my wife would kick me out if I bought another expensive board this early in the season. However, I think I'm going to start shaping a couple boards for the experience this summer. Which, I bet, will actually be much more expensive than just buying the SS. :)

I don't get out to Saguaro much, maybe 2-3 times during the summer (weekdays only). We usually hit Canyon on the weekday afternoon/evenings, and spend a bunch of weekends up @ Roosevelt throughout the summer.

ilikebeaverandboats 05-10-2010 11:02 PM

Yup, thats pretty much the only time we get on the water. During the week is the way to go. If you ever see a Red Tige 20V with a red cap thats us!
