How much ballast do I need?
 

I have an 05 Supra Launch SSV and am replacing the rear bags with 1000lbs in each back locker but im not sure how much weight i will need to add to the front. i currently have a 600lb bag in the ski locker up front but am thinking i will need more to evenly distribute weight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you go with the 60/40 concept, 2000 in the back is going to require around 1200 in front. I'd start around there. Thats if you can fill to the full 2000 in the back.

I would start 50/50 and then when passengers, gear etc sit in the cockpit, then you achieve 60/40... If you start with 1200/2000 and sit 6 people in the cockpit you wind up like 75/25...

Which boat do you have the 21,22,24? Each one is a little different. But for the most part 50/50.

My 22 likes 45/55 which can be hard to get to once you start adding the really big bags in the rear. I run the 750 in the rear with 1200 in the ski locker and another 400 to 650 in bow. Planning to pick up the 1000 bow sack this winter and get it setup to fill once the 1200 is full.

Also once you find the front to rear balance you want you can add weight mid ship to add some more size to the wake and keep the shape.

If I remember correctly the rears in that boat will only hold the 750's not quite full. I think you should be good with the 650 sumo bow sac with your 600 ski locker. If you want more than that I would add weight to center of the boat something like the new sumo floor ballast bag.

You can get a little over 900 in the 1100's on the 22

Sounds like too much weight to me. I wouldn't run that much in the rear lockers unless you are trying to get a surf wake as well. The 22ssv is one of the only boats that I felt like we over weighted. There was an effective amount of ballast before the wake started to go in the wrong direction.

I prefer 750's Fat Sacs in the rear lockers about 3/4 full, the stock 650 in the center full, and the Fly High Fat Sac in the walk way / bow area. This would give you a fairly even split. Maybe a little bias toward the stern but the wake is meaty and really fun.

No Straight Line Flat Sac because of the NON wrap around interior seating configuration. There is a rear facing seat behind the driver.

Unless I am mistaken but the 22-ssv hull does not have the rear facing seat until 07 and there is not a walk through on the launch only the sunsport. Everything else that Spencer said is correct. Rob I think your thinking of the newer hull with the 1100's. You can get the 1100's in the lockers but have to re-enforce the engine walls to keep them from collapsing into the motor.

Also just a note to the OP working with Spencer and the guys at wakemakers will help you a lot. Most of my research and purchases have come from there. They are really outstanding to work with.

If you plan to surf you want the 1100's! It is well worth it for a few more dollars up front. I also don't like how narrow the 750's are in the rear locker in that boat. They are 24" wide as are the 1100# bags.

On the 21V a nice ballast upgrade is to pick up another stock front bag and one those in the back and then put a gravity games 1200 sac up front. I wonder if that would also work in the 22.
