I switch from what ever junk the marina was using to Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W50 (as per engine manual) last fall. This spring (late up here) I noticed that the engine oil pressure was way up. Instead of 40 to 60 psi (depending on rpms etc) I'm between 60 to 80 psi. After a two week vacation it seems to be lower but definitely higher that last year. Overall the engine seems to be running fine (occasional run-on).

I know the viscosity is higher but have never noticed changes like this in other motors when I changed the oil.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Any bad stories? Things to watch out for?
It's perfectly normal. Were your before and after readings taken at the same engine temperature? Colder engine = higher pressure

from my experience the oil pressure guage is pretty innacurate, mine reads 40 at idle and 80 at speed. From what I understand, the cruising and high speed pressure is innacurate, more important is that you HAVE oil pressure, rather than exactly what it is.

I think you're right Tom. I've never seen a change that big. If you're ok at 80 psi I guess I am too. Actually, it only peaks at 80 psi

Mike; I'm in Canada, engines never get hot...lol
Seriously, the motor was fully up to temp when I noticed the pressures

Don't engines (auto and marine) have oil overpressure valves so you don't blow a seal?

I never worried about oil pressure as long as there was some. Mine always seems to sit at 40 when running and 30 when idling.

Trash

There's no doubt that 0 psi is bad...

Thansk for the help guys
