Question:
I am wanting to add more BOOM to my boat. I had one person reccommend "capacitors" as apposed to more batteries. What are your thoughts or suggestions.
We like to drop anchor and listen to loud music for extended periods of time. Please tell me what will give me best results???
Thanks in advance....

long periods of time == more batteries

more boom == more amps and subs and batteries

caps are NOT what you need. like evil said, more time = batts. more boom, ya need more of everything!

It is suggested that capacitors help the amps deal with multiple high current BASS hits in rapid succession. Batteries can not respond as fast as a capacitor in terms of delivering high current bursts.

That being said, a capacitor will not extend your play time. It may, or may not, provide better sound quality for heavy bass songs.

Put your money in batteries and high quality amps before putting it in capacitors. Unless you're going for looks. An expensive capacitor with a voltage read out looks cool.

Craig,

Well said. I think caps look cool too, but didnt want to say that cause I didnt want to look like a dork.

Caps help with voltage drops. If you have your stereo cranked up and bass booming, you will notice a voltage drop. I dont see the purpose of caps... i would rather put the money into a 200A HO alternator... thats for my car. If you have voltage drops with that... then add a cap

I had two different people telling me two different things, so this is why I asked the question. I knew I would get a straight answer here. Thanks guys.

Don't ever listen to the cap guy again .

Caps are a band aid. A fix for voltage drop is a properly rated charging system.
|
Caps are on the way out. A good battery like kinetic would be a much better option. A kinetic battery has low internal resistance to help with the need for a quick hit, and recharge quickly also...you could also check out nsb batteries (model nsb90) they seem to work good also.
