so what would be the louder set up. four pro 80s on a sync 6 or two pro 80s and a 485 on a sync 6?

four pro-80 for SPL, threesome for a balance of SPL/SQ, two 485's for SQ <BR> <BR>My 485's are plenty loud for my needs and most within 100 yards of my boat so I made my choice on SQ.

SPL = Sound pressure level (loudness) <BR>SQ = Sound Quality <BR> <BR>The reality is you don't need it any louder than two 485's. The only reason to go for 4x pro 80's is IMO they are much better looking.

The SYN6 amp isn't designed to power two pair of pro80's. You won't have equal output to each pair. The SYN2 is designed to power one or two pair (two pair at 2ohms). <BR> <BR>I just setup my four pro80's on a SYN2, but haven't been able to tune them yet as I'm waiting on the WS420. The SYN2 seems to do the job well, however, just listening to them straight out of the head unit...

I have 4 pro 80's on a Syn 2....and it is loud and clear.

i had 4 pro 80s with one syn2 wasnt enough power changed to 2 pro 80s and mb8s still wasnt enough power for my taste. reran syn 4 to pro 80s and syn2 to mb8s now it is crazy loud and perfectly clear.... the sound quality is perfect, before it was ok with a little distorsion, but no more <BR> <BR>(Message edited by spolk69 on July 06, 2009)

shawn - off of that SYN4, what kind of power do you have going to your two Pro80's? Are those the only two speakers you are running on the SYN4?

Not sure if he is? I'm really curious about the difference in power between a 4ohm load and a 2ohm load. I have 4 Pro80's and will drive them off of the SYN2, which means 175w RMS @ 2ohms to each speaker. I have always wondered if 2ohm power is any 'weaker' than 4ohm power. I guess I could unplug 2 of my Pro80's, drive the remaining 2 @ 4ohms and listen for a difference? The SYN2 would then power just those two at 200w RMS @ 4ohms each...

^^^ Power is power....teh load ( ohm) is only what the amp sees. The speaker sees the power. Technically there is some degradation in SQ when goign from 4 to 2 ohms. Most peopels ear cant' tell the diff though.

i am serious that it is that much better. the amps are still at 3/4 gain but alot less destortion than with one syn 2 on all 4.

Shawn - I'm still curious how you are getting more power out of a SYN4, a 4 channel amp. Are you running just the 2 Pro80's off of the SYN4? Bridging? Or are you running the mono dual sub setup, just powering the Pro80's that way? (which would be 400w RMS x 2 @ 4ohms)

i beleave it is bridged @ 2 channel(syn 4),got with tim at wet sounds to set it up 6 months ago i cant remember. i think it like 250 per speaker. but it is much better..this way

Justin, <BR> <BR>The 4 PRO 80 set up and pair of 485 set up are going to be right there in terms of volume and output. The 4 80's will offer a little bit higher spl on the high end with the 485 pair offering more fullness on the low end. So in the end it depends on what you like as far as style and look and what fits your tower. Many like the 4 single speaker pods of the 80's and many like the slick style of the 485's. My personal favorite is our 485's. 2 pairs of 80's use the SYN-2. A pair of 485, use the SYN-4 in 2 ch mode for 400x2. <BR> <BR>As for Shawns boat. Shawn has an over the top system and budget was not a concern. He wanted it loud and clean and wanted to take it to the limit. Plus he was running a pair of 80's with a pair of MB-8's. I prefer to run the MB-8 on their own channel. So you can tune the crossover and gain structure different. But in Shawns case, he just went with their own amp all the way around. So he us running a SYN-4 in 2 ch mode on a pair of PRO 80. That amp does 400x2. So twice the rms power ratings on the 80's. He is also running the SYN-2 on the MB-8's. which is 200x2. 50 watts more than the rms ratings. <BR> <BR>His system is tuned perfect and rocks. When running more power like this. You can gain the amp below the unity setting and get a ton of power. At this level of power, the amp isn't working very hard at all. so it runs cool and puts out very clean power. Think of it as putting a big V-8 in a civic. Engine doesn't even break a sweat moving the load because it is more horsepower than you need. But there when you want it. Put a 4 cylinder in a super duty truck and it is going to redline and struggle to get it going. Same as running too small of an amp. It will power a speaker but at the limit of the amp so results in clipping and overheating. And matching the rms ratings is like running the car with the engine designed for it.
