I am getting my first digital camera right after Christmas, after years with a 35mm. I have checked that the lens I already have, will work with the new camera, and I was just wondering if I should get the body alone, or get it with the lens that comes with it? Right now I have Canon 28mm, 50mm, and a Prospec 70-210mm. The new camera would come with a 18-55mm. Is it worth having that lens as well?

I'd buy it without the 18-55.

Which one is available body only or body with lens.
And if the body isn't available, how long is the wait vs your need?

Which camera are you getting?

I would skip the lens too.

Except Costco has some good deals.
I can't get it to post with a URL link???

I am looking at the Canon XTi. I am pretty much a rookie, and my lenses from my old camera work with this one.

The 18-55 is probably as good or better then the 28mm you have but won't touch the 50 from an IQ standpoint. Going from 35mm film body to a 1.6X sensor will take some getting used to, your 28mm isn't going to be wide at all and with a 10mp sensor you're going to see lens irregularities you probably never saw on film. But unless you're prepared to buy some additional lenses I'd say the 18-55 isn't a bad idea until you decide on what you want.

Thank you all for your help. I have enjoyed looking through the pictures that have been posted here on this site, and look forward to getting into this hobby.

I did find the camera with the lens at Walmart for $616. I have not seen it cheaper anywhere yet. Not sure what will happen after Christmas.

I'd get the lens. this way you can have a real wide angle. Stopped down it's not that bad of a lens. Primes are great but having a zoom in this focal length is great on a digital camera.
Don't get me started on walmart

Just found out I am getting some gift cards for somewhere other than Walmart, so no need to worry about that!!

Depending on what your local tax rate is in SD....probably would be better off buying from either of these.....

http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=CNDRXTI1855S

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457539-REG/Canon_1239B001_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

Thanks. I will just have to find something else to do with those gift cards.
