Permission!?

We have a local skate park that seems to be populated with kids between the ages of 7-18. I'm interested in sharpening my action photography skills and what better place to work than a skate park. I've approached the young adults overseeing the park and explained what I am doing, they have directed me to their supervisor who has yet to return my call. I'm pretty certain that I am legally allowed to take photo's in a public place without consent..Yes/no? Someone give me the skinny on that please.
Here's my concern- I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea and an old fella hanging around a skate park with a camera could be seen as creepy.
How to handle this?

Thanks in advance.

Berry I would think your ok, I shoot kids at wakeboard & snowboard contest & some school soccer stuff all the time with no problem. Maybe some of the professionals shooters on here will have a better answer. Probably not a good idea to pass out candy :D

As far as shooting in public places go you have all the rights to do so as a photographer. You cannot be asked to delete your images or hand over your card because technically that would be theft of property.

BUT, shooting strangers is another story. Especially minors. In order to shoot these people you need their consent to do so. More than likely your never going to be sued for shooting photos of people skateboarding and such but technically you could, especially if you publish them anywhere.

Publishing on the internet is a bit of a grey area, kind of like editing a video to a song that you don't have rights to. It's your call.

Thanks for the information and suggestions.

Ryan, I did a bit of reading yesterday and it appears that as a photog. you have the legal right to shoot anyone at any time in a public place without their consent as long as it won't be used for adverts/commercial. There is no expectation of privacy in public( other than obvious bathroom, etc)
I'm not saying this is correct, you know how everything on the internet is true , just what I read.

Is it wrong?
