HA! That post sounds like the most useful thing that Gizmodo has ever done! Did they manage to keep the whole post free of bathroom humor, too?

And I like how the image in the Yahoo article is attributed to Gizmodo.com even though it's clearly a reader submission. Unless Gizmodo is claiming ownership of all the submitted images? That wouldn't surprise me.

dakid 02-01-2011 11:11 AM

scott, you need to post up your night shot of the red malibu. you know which one i'm talkin' about...one of my favorite shots ever.

I went up to this spot to shot a time lapse but I forgot my Intervalometer, ended up shooting some stuff of my car. Saw this post and thought it was appropriate.

garveyj 02-04-2011 6:59 AM

how do you do that - is it just a slower shutter speed?

ilikebeaverandboats 02-04-2011 7:46 AM

how long are these exposures? what lenses?

Here's one I took last Tuesday. We just had a huge ice storm blow through and I wanted to e-mail a pic to my boss to prove to him that the streets were too bad for me to make the drive in to work. This was taken just before dawn. The lights you see are street lights reflecting off windows. I am still trying to master basic exposure, so I used AV mode and dialed in f/11. The camera used a 10 second exposure which really brightened up the scene. It was snowing and the wind was blowing the trees pretty hard, so it's a little soft. The lens I used was a 50mm f1.8

Exposure times vary, depending on the desired effect. I have done a few seconds to a couple hrs.
In Scott's photo, the lens is a canon 15mm fisheye.

a couple long exposures, not really like the above photos, but gives an idea of what different lengths of exposure can do. The really bright one I believe was an 1-1/2hr exposure, the bright spot is the lights from davis area I think

my "day @night" shot was about a 3min exposure. the car + star-trails image was 30-sec exposure x 50 shots.

Cultis Lake, 10 min. exposure, ISO 100 @ f/ 3.5.

scott_a 08-08-2011 8:37 PM

Joe- it was taken on the coast in central Oregon. Not sure what the name of the beach is. We just kinda parked and walked out to the sand. There was a lighthouse up around the corner, though. That's what the light is on the other side of the rock.

And the correct exposure time is 30 MINUTES, not 30 seconds. Doh.

wakeridercwb 08-13-2011 12:39 PM

Took this last night at this place by my house. D3000 with 18-55 20 second exposure
