Black grills?
2 Attachment(s)
I think I know the answer, but what do you think?
Paint them black? |
Yep. do it.
I would plastidip them, and if you didn't like it you could just peel it off. Also, what did you use to mount the speakers? I'm about to do 4 rev10 on my SC and they don't make adapters for it yet.
I say no, think the little bit of chrome makes them pop.
Flat Black. Also a good point on plasti dip. If you dont like it, peel it off
SuperchargedC6 - Looks like it is time to switch to Exile.... They have a bracket fabbed up.... Not sure how you would do Wetsounds until they develop a bracket. You could always just use clamps around the tower, but would not be quite as clean, but would still be fine.
I guess I'll be the first to fab up some wet sounds adapters. Woo Hoo! Shouldn't be too difficult. Boat looks great btw.
Did you do a custom sub box as well? |
Talk with Brian at exile he might have a suggestion or two. We are looking at getting some exile speakers and he offered to custom black them out for us, as that is what the wife wanted, if it would get the sale.
I see nothing wrong with the Chrome. Normally I would say black them out, but your boat already has plenty of chrome accents, it actually flows really well.
On the other hand, if you black out all the chrome accents and the speakers and completely murder it out, I'd say go for it. As it sits, I'd leave it. It looks good. |
leave it looks good the way it is.
Hmmm... I thought the comments would be the opposite. Good to hear... Maybe I will leave them.
Exile hasa black grill kit for the XM7's. You should ask if Brian has them for the 9's yet. http://exileaudio.com/store/index.ph...kit-black.html
Boat is ballin either way. |
I think its racist and you should be banned for life..
I'd say plastidip black then decide :)
You had me @ Plasti Dip!
I guess in all the laughing at Plasti Dip that I do this might be a project that this Clown paint might work well @ the reason I say that is for the reason's started above "if you don't like it you can just peal it off". I don't know to many people that sort of "test the water" with paint, ya know use a paint that easily peals off if you don't like it, Most people decide on a color and then Prep and Paint. (That's sand and prime to you Plasti dippers!) IMO Plasti Dip is just like that stuff Ron Popeel used to sell called GLH stands for Great Looking Hair it was a spray paint for your head to cover up bald spots. This stuff would be great on your grills http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2GeF7A05zQ8 |
Oh Yeah Grant, I remember that stuff. If your hair cutting Flobee on your shop vac messed up your haircut you could just spray some new stuff on.
If it was good enough to spray on your head then it's got to be good enough to spray on your tower speakers.
And back to the Original Topic. To Paint or Not to Paint. I say both look great can't go wrong either way. Chrome looks great and Flat or Gloss black would look great |

Plastidip is awesome. True, in some applications it's no substitute for paint, but when it fits, it's pretty crazy not to use it. I got rid of my chrome bumpers in less than an hour, and for about 15$. No prep and no careful application. It seems to smooth itself out and dry perfect.
Great looking boat. Leave them chrome.

They aren't exiles but I plasti dipped 2 of my rev 10's just to see if I'd like it. I did and I'm going to do the other two. The finish is matte and doesn't match up with the housing but I actually like that better. They make a clear glossifier you could spray over the matte black that would help it blend better if you like that look better.
Im partial to gold in my grill
Black , gotta go black ! The surfs are a bit of a pain to take apart , I had mine hydro dipped and they look great. Not a huge fan of the chrome and make sure to snap some pictures of that sub box ! I'm sure it looks and sounds great.
If you want to do a cheap mock up without prep or masking off for paint/plastidip etc, just get some black electrical tape and cover the chrome on the grills for less than a can of plastidip and less labor too. Then YOU can decide what you like better. You can do it with them in place without even taking anything apart. IMO, that's the easiest way to make the decision. Boat looks great btw. Love the wheels.

I did 3m carbon fiber wrap.
Brad that looks great! How hard was it to do? Have you wrapped anything else before? I'd imagine that's possibly easier than masking it off and spraying plastidip. What'd the material run you and where'd you procure it?
Very easy to do. I've wrap the window bezel and center dash trim of my tahoe. These were very easy just take your time and change blade freq. either hobby knife or razor blades.
Here is what I ordered http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gloss-Black-...687a84&vxp=mtr |
Cool. Thanks guys... I really like that carbon fiber wrap idea too.
Tyler pm me, I met you at Exile a month or so ago. I can hook you up on the 3m wrap.
SWEET Sending a PM
Haven't got one. Make sure you do I can text you some great pics!
Hate to threadjack, so I won't completely. But I have to know- BRAD, how does that 3M hold up on the corners and such, I'm not familiar with those grills, did you wrap around to the back too?
I'm still gonna +1 for Plastidip. It's a low-contact surface, so no worries on it holding up, and I think it'll look good with the badges on the boat. Worst case scenario, peel it and you're out $15 and an hour of your time. |
Use 3m 1080 film. Aside from it being designed for wrapping cars (not that you can't wrap anything with it) the carbon looks much more realistic than Ni doc.

Mine held up fine. The stuff is very easy to work with. I didn't wrap it around the back just front only and trimmed. Here is a pic of my Tahoe interior I did.
I powder coated a lot of my polished pieces last year. Held up very well last summer. Want to do more, it sorta becomes addicting!
Hydrodip is also an option if you can take the grill off.
Rob
Just sent another one. My PM's never have worked great since the new site format several years back.... If you did not get one, send me one cause I can usually reply to them. |
Ha, I was just thinking about wrapping some Grills in that 3m carbon fiber. Looks great guess I will proceed. For people asking about durability of it I wrapped an MX bike airbox in it well over a year ago and it still looks perfect & I am not easy on my bikes. It's real easy to work with & cheap of ebay..........
