In TX, I'm planning on riding throughout the winter, but still need to drain my engine after use since I have no electricity in my storage for a heat light... and we do occasionally get below 32 for a while...

when removing the plugs last week, I noticed they were a little scored and roughed up from my wrench and the threads (guess the engine threads were rusty)...

I'm gonna get a wire (gun cleaning) brush and clean the engine threads, try to keep them from rusting more...

Where can I get an extra set of engine drain plugs to have for backup? are they a standard thread size... auto part store, dealer, online...

Also thought about the petcock route, but read about potential rust blockage... so I'll wait on that...

Check at a Mercruiser service place. Their plugs are blue plastic butterfly style with an o-ring and may work for other chevy blocks. If they do, you just take them out and put them back by hand.

Go to www.skidim.com and search for 3/4 npt pipe plug. Search results will have the plain plugs, t-handle plugs, and well as petcocks.

Dont over tighten the blue butterfly plugs. It just mangles the o ring and then they tend to leak.

Which plugs did you get at Elliots? Did they have the blue butterfly style plugs? If so, I'd like to head out there and pick up a few spares. I always drop those little f'ers in the bilge.

no, they had the brass NPT plugs... Im not sure if the blue butterfly plugs would fit in my indmar?
