Led trailer light strobe/flasher?
 

A buddy has a custom trailer with led lights (brake, reverse, etc) that he tows to events and is trying to figure out how the boat dealers make the lights strobe/flash at boat shows. I always thought they did it with relays, but am not sure. Does anyone know how the dealers make the trailer led's strobe/flash (without adding one of those auto specific kits that you can buy)?...i figure they use a deep cycle battery for power, but am not sure what else they do. Thanks for any help.

The obvious choice would be to use indicator relays and a battery. Just run power to the relays which auto switch on/off every second or so etc etc. Simple and cheap enough project. You could also buy one of those sound reacting kits so that the lights flash in time to a sound source... that could be a cool project.

To make them strobe you'd need an actual strobe bulb and ballast....

You can actually purchase the stobe LED's (you often see them on police cars and fire trucks). They have them (or you can order them) from most trucking supply stores.

Here is a link to one of the biggest brands in truck lighting and you see they have a wide variety of strobe lights.

If you already have LED lights on the trailer then all you'd need is a strobe controller. You could get a cheap one and have all of them strobe the same way at the same time or you could get a fancier controller like show cars typically have that can do strobe patterns and what not with each light (or group of lights) independently.
