Hi all, need a bit of advice on downgrading to a cruisier - easier to ride board for a small / bordering on medium wake. I've got an IS Blue Lake that is pretty hard work to keep in the pocket (has something to do with being 230lbs) and was looking to get a longer / broader board that's less hard work (legs are burnt out from yesterday!). Don't need to do anything fancy with this board - just cruise and try a few basic moves. Unfortunately the wakesurf market in Australia is nearly non-existant (and our $ is pathetic compared to the US$ at the moment) so the only boards I can find are the broadcast or a 5'6 Ronix Koal. Well, over to the guru's now for some advice............

Hey Tim,

I haven't ridden the Koal yet. It looks to be PolyU with wakeboard fins. I find the Broadcast to be significantly slower than the Blue. I can't speak to the ride of the Koal, although I'd have a hard time believeing it was significantly faster/easier to stay with the pocket than the Blue.

That's too bad that your options are so limited. IS makes the Red which is their big guy board and would work well for you. Where did you acquire the Blue? Any chance you could pick up a Red Tide? Alternatively, Hyperlite makes that huge 5'11" Landlock with the meat cleaver fins, any chance you could find one of those?

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately the red retials for $1100(aussie) but the broadcast is $579 (Koal is $649) so the decision is a little bit financial as well. With the broadcast being slower would it still sit in the pocket a bit easier being longer / wider? I'm not to fussed about the slower board, just wanted to change to something once my legs are burnt out from riding the blue.

I’m about your size and have a Broadcast 5.6 and one of my crew has the Blue. I went to extremes to increase the wake on my old boat, however the wake on my current boat is really good so that’s not a good comparison.

The Blue is a really fast board. I only rode the Landlocked once. From my limited experience with the Landlocked I didn’t find it to be any faster than the Broadcast, but it did seem like there wasn’t enough nose rocker for my tastes.

How long have you been wakesurfing? With time and experience riders generally do more with less. Have you tried slowing the boat down? Assuming you’re riding front side, so your toes are to the wake, try to move your toes closer to the edge of the board, closer to the wake? Try to set your stance a little more forward on the board.

If you’ve been at it a while and if these suggestions don’t help I think the IS Red would be a good choice. If not the Red some other larger board would be a good choice.

Yeah, I posted up a while back on positioning on the Blue. Still pretty new at it and all the advice really helped. I have the wake as big as I can get it (and keep the family happy on board, and it is hard work to keep the Blue going. How did you find the Broadcast on the smaller wake? Did it make much of a difference being that bit bigger than the blue? I will still keep working with the blue but wanted to know if the broadcast would be that bit easier to stay in the pocket with?
thanks again.

bigshow 01-18-2009 7:37 PM

I learned on the Broadcast, rode it on and off for about a year. The next year a started riding a lot and got a lot better. My getting a lot better at riding is like saying of the seven dwarves, I'm the tall one.

Thing was I kept working on the ballast too. I had my boat listing so hard the people had trouble standing up. My best ballast story is when a motorist con a bridge called 911 because they thought we were sinking. There were fire truck and even the police helicopter!

IMO you’ve got a really good board. What boat are you riding behind, what's your ballast set up. Any pics of the wake?

turkish 01-18-2009 9:29 PM

This link shows about as big as the wake gets:

http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/647619.html?1228122560

I've fixed up the foot / weight displacement / closer to the boat position with a fair bit of success. Unfortunately the ballast has gone as far as I can stretch the friendship with my wife! Our boat is an 03 Malibu wakesetter LXI (pretty much a response LXI with a wedge / mid ship ballast / tower / 4 blade prop) so I guess i've reached the stage now where the wake I've got is what I have to surf on.
Just out of interest I rode a 5'3 CWB ride behind a SAN 220 on Saturday and it felt easier to keep in the pocket than the Blue??? Unfortunately it was a one off and its back to the Malibu next weekend.

For a cruiser board, I don't think either of the boards you posted would work best. Broadcast is much slower than a blue. I too liked the Ride as it's faster than a Broadcast, but if you are working hard on a Blue, the Ride will be more forgiving when throwing your weight around but slower. I don't see any advantage there.

I would really look to a larger board like HL Landlock. I've seen them on ebay and evogear for half of retail price. There's a few other big boards but harder to find used at a cheap price. If you do find a large board close to the size of a Landlock, post up and you'll get reviews on it.

Cruise on a landlock, progress your skills on your Blue (hint: get the speedline fins as it completely loosens the board up and makes it fun again)

From the video, I would say slow your boat down. It would shorten your pocket but make the wave bigger and some more push. See if you can buy some lead to move around (wife won't know it's there) "just some laundry detergent bottles that I have trouble picking up honey..."

usostyle 01-19-2009 7:41 AM

Tim, I have ridden both the blue lake (a lot) and own a broadcast 5'6". The blue lake is MUCH easier to ride as a cruiser than the broadcast, all things being equal (wake size & shape) the blue lake is much easier to cruise on. Also, between those two boards, the broadcast catches an edge much easier than the blue lake, the blue lake is much more buoyant and forgiving with attempting basic moves...Oh yeah, I am 6'1" 265lbs. so I feel your pain about finding a board that fits our size and riding style...I truly do not think you will find what you are looking for i the broadcast 5'6"

wakebrdjay 01-19-2009 8:07 AM

I can vouch for Show on my Blue Lake.I was driving The Mighty Enzo and had him going 13+mph.

packrat 01-19-2009 12:21 PM

As far as the broadcast goes does the 4ft 9 model work for beginners too? Would it be better than the Broadcast 5ft 6 for people under say 180lbs?
Thanks

mo_scrilla 01-19-2009 1:25 PM

I started out on the Broadcast, then we got a Coex, it's a nice board for my friend and my wife. Too small for me 6' #225 .
It didn't take long to outgrow the Broadcast. I got a Blue Lake Quad and I LOVE that board. You do have to work to have fun.
I just don't see the fun of "Cruising". Just standing on the board is for resting. Working the face of the wave is a blast.

deepcove 01-19-2009 6:38 PM

The Koal is definently not a cruising board.

turkish 01-20-2009 3:03 AM

Thanks for the posts. I was hoping the Hyperlite or Ronix would be ok but its good in a way to find this info out before spending $$$$$. I'll keep going with the blue and hopefully the boat/board/abilites will finally find a nice balance soon.

rallyart 01-20-2009 9:44 AM

Tim, one of the best ways for me to get more power out of a relatively small wake was to make sure the boat had a great deal of list. Without adding a ton of weight that means having one of the guys hang onto the tower standing on the surf side. It's kind of fun and no one has slipped off yet. (If they do I figure it's just training for the surfer to execute a fast turn)

wakemikey 01-20-2009 3:16 PM

I agree you gotta drive slower, and list the boat more. Gotta ride with toes WAY close to the edge and weight as far forward as possible with legs as wide as possible.

The Broadcast is not very fast. The lastlock isn't that fast either but it is VERY bouyant and everyone in my crew has had much success with it.

Shred Stixx makes a large model that looks to be designed for the heaviest riders I have seen yet up to 250. Sorry at work forget the model name, thinking ja mako? Haven't ridden them though and they are spendy although over at wakeoutlaws you can get one used from their crew.

Trick Boardz makes a model for big riders that looks real nice. Made of wood (but quality like a waterski) and cheaper price. Check 'em out. Haven't ridden 'em yet.

Lastly I have a standard issue ocean surfboard (only about 6' not a longboard, sorry I know nothing about ocean boards) and that thing is buyant and fast. It is the first board I learned on and now that I compare it to regular wakesurf boards it is almost too fast! I am always on the swim platform unless I ride the brakes (rear foot)lol. Craigslist you can find for like $75.

Oh, btw I own an 87 Supra SunSport with 1400 - 1800lbs ballast. Drive 12.5mph. I ride a Inland Surfer Black 4-Skim (it's nice but the nose dives a lot), and we have the Broadcast 5 6 pictured above.

This pic below is actually the Hyp 08 Landlock. Good luck! Oh no now I'm power pic postin sorry! Got lots more search for SunSport or WakeMikey.

bigshow 01-20-2009 4:20 PM

Another vote here to slow the boat down. Looks like you have enough wake.

I think the broadcast is a really good stable board for the beginner.

If I could only have one board for a lot of people it might be the Blue.

If I could have only one board for my own personal use it would be a Walker Project Bullet.

turkish 01-21-2009 7:39 PM

Any of the bigger blokes tried the Phase 5 Oogle? I was looking on the web last night and that is another one targeted at the bigger surfer - but the specs have it as shorter and the same width as the Blue.

usostyle 01-21-2009 8:37 PM

Tim- Yes I have tried the oogle, and I couldn't come close to even staying in the pocket to just cruise, let alone try any moves/tricks, I tried all kinds of feet placements weight all the way forward, 50/50, 70/30, pumping like hell, no pumping...still nothing. Same boat, same wake that I ride my broadcast and the blue lake behind with no problems. Definitely NOT a cruising board, also had a hard time with that board holding me, not nearly as buoyant as the blue lake or even the broadcast. It was also very squirrely so I could see where it would be a FUN board for somebody... just not the 250+ crowd.

I just need to lose some of this xtra baggage and I wouldn't have to waste some much time/effort/energy/$ demo'ing all these damn boards...

I feel like the classic fat chick that walks into a shoe store and is obviously a size 10 and asks the shoe salesman to get her a size 6...WTF???

bigshow 01-21-2009 9:00 PM

No one in my regular crew, heck extended crew for that matter has a P5 board. Can't help here.

There's this one guy that checks the WW web site from time to time...

turkish 01-21-2009 10:51 PM

Yeah, it did seem strange that the Oogle was marketed at bigger riders (or the classic 'fat chicks' as ICE puts it) but fairly short? Despite searching the web for months and finding only a few boards I keep stumbling upon more and more boards here in Australia - no scondhand ones - all new of course. They're kind of hidden in the dark recessess of the shops websites. Anyone ridden the LF Venture. Colour is a bit modern-art painting looking but if its a good board I could live with it.
Promise this is the last one I ask about,so I'll stop hijacking the discussion board and let everyone get on with who does or doesnt land that best tricks instead of listening to someone complaing about not being able to stay in the pocket

01-22-2009 4:37 AM

Hey Tim, I do believe that the LF Venture has been manufactured in sizes from 4'6", 5'0" and 5'6" over the years. I think I remember reading that in '09 there will be a 5'10". Which one are you looking at? The 4'6" and 5'0" were among the slowest boards I have ever ridden.

Also, don't feel you're putting anyone out with the questions, we want you to succeed! Also, the forum really needs to be about "end users", no doubt someone, somewhere shares your same problem/circumstance so, in effect, you are creating a resource.
