Redwood Forest area ?'s
 

We are taking the kids down to the Redwoods, trees of mystery, sealion caves, etc for spring break.
My kids are 5 and 7, so my question is, is there anything in the area that is a ""must see" or are there any suggestions regarding the area. My parents took my sister and I there when I was a kid and we loved it. Its been a long time and I don't remember much about the area.

You cant go wrong. There is so much to see and so many things to see... How far south you going? There are some great beaches and State Parks in the area.

We are staying in Crescent City but we have no real agenda. I'd like to hit the three for sure but wouldn't mind driving an hour or two to see other cool stuff.

If you take Highway 199 out of Grants Pass you might want to check ODOT and make sure there's no rock slides. A couple of weeks ago they had a big slide near the Smith river, and it closed the highway for 3 days. Storms coming in all this week, can really affect that road. Make sure you drive through the tree at Trees of Mystery, your kids will will think its cool. Have fun!

I have some great memories from when I was a kid staying at Klamath River RV Park. It's been over 20 years since I've been there, but back then it was unbelievable salmon and steelhead fishing. Here is a link to the park we used to stay at, and some of the areas best attractions.

Two very cool spots just south of Cresent City.

Prarie Creek/ Fern Canyon is an awesome place. Havent been there in a couple years but the herd of Elk is an impressive sight.

You have to go to Fern Canyon. Parts of Jurassic Park were shot there and it is a great easy hike up through the canyon. My kids love it there and still talk about it (they are in college). The road to get there is about 6 miles of gravel road, through a couple of creeks, but it is well worth the trip. There is an elk viewing area as well right were you turn off 101.

Not sure when your are traveling, but the weather is currently wet windy and cold. Dress accordingly.

Harris Beach in Brookings is a great beach for kids but can get pretty busy. We like the beach in Harbor by the Best Western - lots of logs, sand, rocks, and tide pools down a ways when the tide is out. It is easy to find enough wood to make a fire. This Best Western is also a great place to stay since it is right on the beach (and they take dogs).

As far as food, you are on your own. I have spent a lot of along that area and can not recommend a single restaurant (that I like) north of McKinleyville other than the pancake place in Brookings/Harbor where the turn is to go down to the Best Western. We usually go to the market and get bread, meat, cheese, and wine to enjoy on the beach (weather permitting).

Great info. We just got here. Man your not kidden about the weather. It snowed on us all the way from grants pass to redwoods. I forgot about the bug stations in California as I have a cooler of fruit, breakfast and lunch stuff. They quized us a little about what we had and let us go. Were going to check out some of those spots, thanks again.
