All of the above, a good rope will help you progress better than a good board or even a huge wake. As Mark said, it helps you maintain control througout your whole ride. Line tension is what gives you pop, so you don't want to have the rope pull you off axis by recoiling. I would say invest in a quality rope and handle, nothing short of spectra, but a jacket line preferably. I got a jacketed mainline off of ebay for $40 and it was worth every penny. I would have paid double that if I would have known it would have helped that much.

No stretch is a great help. I thought it was hype when I first got started, but the difference is amazing. <BR> <BR>Here's how important it is to me. Someone stole a Yellow Jacket line off my boat. Instead of pulling out the ski rope and heading for our riding spot, we spent an hour going to the pro shop that same day to get a new Yellow Jacket.

don't use a ski rope if you plan on jumping. Last summer we left the wakeboard rope on the dock and decided to just use the ski rope because we weren't to close to the dock. When I cut in the rope stretched out. Once I was in the air, the rope recoiled sending my upper body forward. On the landing, my knee bent backwards while cracking my growth plate and putting cracks through the top of my bone. <BR>Its worth it to spend the time or money to go get a good non stretch rope!

Definitely get a no stretch rope. I got a hardline rope and handle this year, and I can totally tell the difference from last year when i had a ski rope. Unlike regular tow ropes, the rope doesn't bounce around, and you don't get thrown off by the extra stretch edging into the wake.

What they said + it's a good safety item as the rope won't be shooting into the boat anymore. I am cheap and had a hard time bucking up for one but I don't regret it now. Money well spent.

Way back not long after I first started wakeboarding I used a slalom ski rope and then switched to a wakeboard rope. I didn't really see much benefit from the lack of stretch. That may have been because there wasn't any stretch left after a season or two of hardcore slalom runs through the course. <BR> <BR>But one thing that really struck me as beneficial was the light weight of the wakeboard rope as it was much thinner than the slalom line. When I tried the slalom rope again I really noticed the weight.
