Does the shape of the encloser matter if the box is sized right? I have a space under one of my seats thats 8" tall but fairly long and wide. I wanted to biuld a box thats short enough to fit one of my 12's under there with the sub downfiring. Would this be ok?

Not sure how you would have enough room to do that with 8". You still have to space it up off the floor enough so that it works correctly. You're probably looking at 6" mounting depth, plus 1.5" combined depth of enclosure material (assuming 3/4" MDF). That only gives you 1/2" for the sub to fire down, I'm sure the sub has more than 1/2" excursion. None of these measurements even takes into consideration the depth the sub magnet needs to be spaced off the back of the box. It would sound pretty bad if you did it this way.

What 12 do you have? If you get the shallow mount RF Punch's that would be the perfect sopt for it.

Byron, <BR> <BR>To put a finer point on NuBu's comments, you have to have a 12-inch sub's surround 2 1/2" off the sole or you'll seriously choke it's output. You also need an inch minimum clearance between a vented pole piece and the rear interior of the box. <BR> <BR>The JL Audio 13TW5 is a 13-inch with a mounting depth of only 2 1/2" and works in a .8 net cu. ft. enclosure. <BR> <BR>The shape of a sealed sub box is of little consequence (as compared to a midrange) as long as the displacement is right. However, 5 1/2" O.D. might still be a little shallow. I'd use a 3/4" thick baffle and recess the woofer using a backloaded ring. I'd also use a 1/2" back with multiple stiffening braces. You guys kinda confirmed what I was thinking unfortunately. Im running 2 Crossfire BMF 1214's and the mounting depth is just under 6". They require a 1.0 cu ft box. Im running one at the drivers seat and the other in the passangers storage area and was hoping to move it. Maybe i'll just have to make a funky box that fits better where its at now.
