Hey Friends -

Still icy on the 10,000 here in MN, lame.

I've been riding the snowboard lately, watching Mack Dog films, etc. and appreciating all of the creativity snowboarders have. Since wakeboarding is my #1, I always try to think of things pros could do differently.

I guess I'm a little surprised there aren't more tricks guys are doing from a blind cut. The answer might be obvious and I'm just not seeing it. I'm not a great rider by any means, but I know that I can dig in a pretty good edge riding blind.

I'm just thinking that riders that can kill it would be able to do some sick stuff with a blind take off. I know I'm going to be trying frontside 180's with a blind take off once the ice melts.

So many snowboarders begin their body rotation (not board) on their take offs and it looks pretty stylie.

Am I an idiot for thinking this could be a new trend? Is it too awkward to do many maneuvers?

Perhaps more food for thought: When can I expect to see a wakeboarder spin a 3 off a bonk? Seems to be pretty big on snow lately.

Winter brainstorming...

hawkeye7708 01-21-2009 7:30 AM

Redbull's Wake Cracker... they had Oli Derome do a bonk to a 180 or a 3 or something off a tree... if i remember right. And If i'm thinking like you are on the "blind" cut... Zane's Slurpee is cut in blind.

99xstar 01-21-2009 7:43 AM

Cool Ben.

I guess I've not seen the Slurpee. Is that the only trick out there? Seems like there could be a lot more.

I think it would be cool to ollie a bs 180 mid cut, and do some kind of trip flip off the wake.

jhilltn 01-21-2009 7:49 AM

i don't think the slurpee would be what you're talking about. crazy trick but not a stylie trick.

do you just mean coming in wrapped? i'm having a hard time picturing what you're saying and i can't figure out the fs180 coming in blind.

hco 01-21-2009 7:56 AM

Well you can't exactly butter into a rotation on a wakeboard, and if you start spinning/flipping before you leave the wake there is a solid chance disaster will happen.

bill 01-21-2009 8:02 AM

yea the rope keeps blinds entrys from being a smooth trick release.not impossible but would be very hard to create tricks starting that way IMO

joshbuzz 01-21-2009 8:07 AM

There's a lot of snow style out there, just give it a little time... you'll be seein threes off bonks really really soon...

hawkeye7708 01-21-2009 8:14 AM

Here is the link to the video for the WakeCracker. It takes a while to load... but it's some pretty neat footage. They created several teams, and sent them off to get the best photos and videos. Most of the jibs and rails you see were trees cut down and made by the riders. The Bonk comes around the 2/3 mark in the video. They highlight a very large, dead tree on an island and then show a VERY quick clip of Oli making contact with it. It's HUGE. I think they must be using the whole footage for another video or something. At any rate... enjoy!

http://www.redbull.ca/mime/1193857234787-1081420450/wakecracker%20teaser%202.mov

99xstar 01-21-2009 8:16 AM

I'll try to explain the take off position more clearly.

A regular footed rider would be coming in to the wake on their toes, switch, while holding the handle behind their back with their left hand. So, it's essentially wrapped, but the rider would be facing backward instead of looking at the boat.

andy_nintzel 01-21-2009 8:42 AM

did someone say SLURPEEEEEE!!!!!!!1

hawkeye7708 01-21-2009 8:54 AM

Oh I said it! Between 7-11 and Zane, how can you lose? . I still wanna see a vid or a sequence of that trick...

joshbuzz 01-21-2009 8:57 AM

so switch toeside?

stephan 01-21-2009 8:58 AM

I mean Randall kinda comes in wrapped blind. Like when he does the TS wrapped BS 5, which is friggin ridiculous!!

99xstar 01-21-2009 9:04 AM

I think what Big Heavy is referring to is what I'm picturing. Sorry for the horrible description. I suppose it would still be BS (misspoke earlier). Know of any footage of that to post? That sounds like it screams style.

shredsickgnar 01-21-2009 9:27 AM

I do ts bs 3 cutting in blind ever once in a while. They are pretty weird cause you get a gnarly tug from the rope if you pop off the wake wrong.

99xstar 01-21-2009 9:37 AM

Nick - Have any footage of that?

justinh 01-21-2009 9:55 AM

It has been 8 or 9 years, but I will try to trap a slurpee on video this weekend--If I can make it out and the weather permits.

It is a weird little trick, but not too hard.

lfxstar 01-21-2009 9:55 AM

What on earth are you even talking about? Wrapped? Coming in with your eyes closed? Turning your head away from the boat? I don't quite understand what you are talking about

joshbuzz 01-21-2009 9:58 AM

Justin,
Y'all riding this weekend?

srh00z 01-21-2009 10:06 AM

I think the only place I have seen Zane's slurpee is on Scrubs of the South. His and Andrew's section is great. Trevor has a nice section in the video as well.

westsidarider 01-21-2009 10:08 AM

i cant believe there are no vids on youtube of zane or dean levelle doin a slurpee. the way that those guys do that trick is no stylish by any means but if you get the right guy that can take the trick big, slow and grab it i think that would be really sick.

lfxstar 01-21-2009 10:33 AM

jason, d harf has been doing wrapped ts bs off 3's and 5s with some crazy grabs lately ie slurpees. they look awesome

john211 01-21-2009 11:11 AM

Check this site. Look under "backroll" variations, select "slurpee" (last entry), and there will be one, courtesy Dean Lavelle.

http://www.wakeboard.com.sg/index.php?act=ST&f=37&t=84&st=0#entry8 8

justinh 01-21-2009 11:30 AM

If the weather/Maria permits. Wedding is 9 days away.

After all of the Wedding festivities expire, Mid-Feb or so we need to take the boat up to Lake Bryan.

stephan 01-21-2009 12:12 PM

Kyle, look at the sequence jb posted. There is a major difference between a TS wrapped OA spin and a Slurpee.

joshbuzz 01-21-2009 12:25 PM

9 days?!? Enjoy the festivities, and tell Maria I said hello. And we're ready to have you back at Lake Bryan, for sure.

hawk7 01-24-2009 12:52 PM

The G-Spot has a blind take off, kgbs are wrapped by a lot of female pros, and murray does wraped kgb 5's i believe, blind petes I assume could be done with a wrapped aproach, I've seen wrapped tootsie rolls, I assume you could wrap flavor flips and fruit loops, pretty much any toeside backside spin you can wrap up, but if your looking for wrapped tricks, watch randall harris ride, he invented the wrap handle, it was initially called the vandall handle.

hsryan33 01-24-2009 1:52 PM

what is a flavor flip and a g-spot trevor? i've been out of the wake scene for awhile. i think a slurpee would look cool if you could grab it mute and not spin the extra 180. my friend said there is a guy in the first hyperlite video that does a slurpee without the extra 180.

the_bum 01-24-2009 2:07 PM

I wanna try a slurpee next time out, I will let y'all know how it goes.

brinks 01-24-2009 5:46 PM

Flavor Flip: TS Front Flip to BS 180
Fruitloop: TS Front Flip to BS 360 (I think, It's been awhile since I've seen these tricks done!)
Maybe we will see them at the wakegames and nationals with the new division that was added.
G-Spot: Wrapped TS backroll to BS 180
A slurpee could be considered a wrapped Blind Pete. If you think about it, It's just a TS Backroll with a BS 360 with both hands on the handle behind your back and if you just slid one hand 2ft further up the rope to the wrap handle it becomes wrapped instead of the double blind approach. Not much difference.

bailey 01-24-2009 6:34 PM

Some people learn the toeside backroll with the hands behind the back like the slurpee. You don't have to spin the whole way if you don't want to. I have seen people learn it that way. I couldn't get the hang of it but that is one of the ways we tried to help people learn it at the wakeboard school.

shredsickgnar 01-25-2009 4:10 PM

Jeffrey Byron, I don't have any footage. I was trying to do just a bs 180 like that and grab it Japan all the way through but I just ended up doing a 3 cause of the pull of the rope. I got them down cause I wanted to throw one in a contest just mess with the judges.

But when ever I go out next..... so like in 3 months I'll be sure to get one on video.

99xstar 01-26-2009 7:14 AM

Nice Nick. Yeah, it's something different.

That slurpee jb's link has is the type of thing I'm talking about. I just didn't know about them. Pretty sick.

hsryan33 01-26-2009 10:53 AM

i thought a fruit loop was a ts front flip w/ a backside 180. doesn't dean lavelle do those?

bill 01-26-2009 11:01 AM

i sometimes take off with my eyes closed, does that count lol

bill 01-26-2009 11:04 AM

BTW yes a Froot loop is a ts front flip with a bs 180 and a tootsie roll is a ts front roll with a bs180

bill 01-26-2009 11:09 AM

Brink a dum dum is a ts front roll to bs 360 and a flavor flip is a ts front flip to bs 360, i think

eyekahn 01-26-2009 11:47 AM

Adam Fields does a awesome fruit loop also.

hsryan33 01-26-2009 12:18 PM

mike weddington has a cool fruit loop. who does flavor flips?
