just busted out my old tub and ripped out the sheet rock and installed a new tub and hardibacker for a new tile surround. also laying new tile on the floor with a new vanity and toilet. lots of work, this is the 3rd if done in my new house. ill be glad when its over.

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 9:31 AM

"ill be glad when its over."

I am with you there Alan

Can't wait to have my house put back together. But we have a long way to go. Bought a fixer upper. We have been at for a few years already. Kitchen was done first. Put it where the living room used to be so I can have a lake view from the kitchen. This bathroom is actually where a bedroom once was. Laundry room is where old kitchen was. To say the least, my poor hubby has been busy. We are just very lucky to have a brother in law that is a tile contractor.

acurtis_ttu 02-04-2010 9:39 AM

If it's not too late. Two things we did during our rennovations were:

added an overhead rain head ( dual heads) I'm a shower snob now, lol.

Make sure the controls are in a spot you can reach without getting wet to turn them on.

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 9:44 AM

Good ideas Adam. Thanks

zo1 02-04-2010 9:50 AM

IMO the best item for a show is a thermostatic mixing valve. It gives you two controls, one for flow and one for temp. Allows you to simply turn the water on and never touch the temp (unless you want to modify a little bit).

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 10:20 AM

Loving these ideas guys. Thanks so much. I think I will soon turn into a shower snob myself. Keep the ideas coming.

Heres some pictures of how the kitchen counters turned out. These were taken before the floors were done.

before any one comments on how we should have gone with granite slab instead of granite tile. I have to say that was the original idea. Then my brother in law offered this tile at no cost. It was left from a housing tract he did. It soon became absolutely gorgeous tile.

megsswm 02-04-2010 10:39 AM

Becky-
Your kitchen is beautiful and really functional...I wish I had pics of the remodel we did on ours a year ago it is the exact color scheme and even appliances.
We are gearing up to tear out and re-do the master bath this summer...your pics of the shower are giving me some great ideas !

kyle_m 02-04-2010 10:40 AM

Becky the house is looking very good!!! ill definitely have to make a trip to mcclure to see it sometime and ride with derek scott and kevin!!!

salty87 02-04-2010 10:41 AM

^ that does look nice

i'm in the planning stages too. anyone put a radiant floor heater in? any problems or tips?

zo1 02-04-2010 10:42 AM

Not sure if it is your thing or not or if you already have tile chosen but in our old house when we added on our master suite, for the tub surround and shower floor we used stream stones. Looked incredible and the texture was almost like a mini foot massage while you were showering. The only thing that I woulda done differently is to skip the body sprays. thought that I would use but never did so it was a waste of $$.

Best thing we did in that bath was the heated floor.

zo1 02-04-2010 10:44 AM

LOL, salty, what are you looking to do, just the bath? i installed the electric heat in ours (mentioned above) Really easy to do, and even easier now that they come in "tiles"...

guido 02-04-2010 10:44 AM

That looks great.

No wonder you guys let us use the houseboat. I wouldn't want to leave the house, either. He, he, he.

We need to get up there and ride dirtbikes with the George's some time soon. I miss BG. Barely saw him at all last year while he was down for the count.

zo1 02-04-2010 10:46 AM

Kitchen looks great BTW...

jwag 02-04-2010 10:52 AM

Make sure the flooring dude doesnt floor in the under counter appliances. You gotta be able to get them out to service them

helinut 02-04-2010 10:53 AM

My father in law did his bathroom. He put floor heat in. It worked for a week then quit. Nothing much you can do to fix it unless you want to pull the whole floor up. He's actually thinking about do that too. Sounds like the "tiles" thing would be a nicer way to go. If you lay the floor and break the wire for the heat, you're SOL.

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 11:20 AM

Meghan, If you don't already have a tile guy when you are ready to do yours. My brother in-law actually lives in your area. He does work up in Sonora area a lot.
I will keep posting progress pictures for all of you.
Thanks for all the nice comments.
Evan you are welcome up here anytime, and you already know the houseboat is yours anytime as well. Better take us up on that offer though. We are finding we never use it and might sell sometime in the next few years unless it starts getting some use.
Kyle, you know you are welcome up here too. Derek only uses the houseboat when you guys come up.

megsswm 02-04-2010 11:28 AM

Becky thanks! Fortunetly I am married to a handy guy...we have been able to remodel our entire house without hiring out. It has saved us a ton of money. Although he is not a fan of tile work...so I will let him know when the time comes. Keep the pics coming.

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 12:15 PM

I love all the pics. I think we need to make this thread about pics of renovations people have done. Last year I bought a brand new house that was very plain. I'm just building up a bunch of ideas to unleash. Keep them coming....

supraride 02-04-2010 8:32 PM

Becky What do you have on that floor and curb in front?

bg__dereks_mom 02-04-2010 8:46 PM

Tony,
That part has not been tiled yet. It is still floated in mud. It will be tiled tomorrow.
The thing in the corner will be a tiled bench.
The shower floor will be in one by one tumbled travertine. Like the stripe above.
The rest of the bathroom floor will be in the same marble as the shower.

02-05-2010 5:38 AM

looks good. my friend is wanting to do granite counter tops in his home. im trying to convince him to go the route you did with the 12x12. i looks sharp. if you talk to your brother in law can you ask him what the smallest gap/spacing you can use with granite tile

Adam
WOW beautiful!!!

Alan,
In answer to your question. With sanded grout, 1/16

02-05-2010 10:29 AM

great thanks becky.

adam did you refinish your cabinets or get new one? they look really good. do you like your faucets(2nd pic)? ive seen them but didnt know if i would like the functionality but i like the way they look.

here are a couple pics of the house i bought in october. it was a custom home in the 70's. one bathroom had a baby blue toilet and vanity and the other had a yellow toilet and vanity. the 3rd was just a normal bath. when the appraisal came back before the sale they got slammed by the comps and had to drop their price quite a bit because they hadnt upgraded the rooms.

here are a couple pics of what ive done. i did the slate bathroom first and laid that myself. i got sick of that pretty quickly and traded a fridge i had from my old house for tile work for the other 2 baths(one will start next week). when im done with the 3rd bath im going to 2 do more projects, make a walk in closet in the master bedroom that will go thru the existing wall and into the attic above the garage and cut out the pantry door and slide the fridge into the pantry. the fridge just looks silly in the middle of the kitchen.

here or some pics

bg__dereks_mom 02-05-2010 10:52 AM

Sorry guys. I got the names turned around.

ss1234 02-05-2010 12:02 PM

Ok, I'll play a little....

Here's some pics of a little project I did. Bought a "house" 4 years ago, bit of a fixer. Step 1: Full outdoor kitchen, step 2) redo upstairs master suite, Step 3) re-do the rest of the house. Maybe 5% of the walls were not re-framed (long story). We hired about 75% of the framing (incl the big beams), the stucco, and the hvac ducting. Everything else I did, when I wasn't at my day job....oh yea, and we lived there during it all too. There was summer where this kept me off the water. Here are a couple pics of a small portion of step 3, showing our kitchen. On the last pic: my kids had this love / hate thing going. hated not having the big screen on the wall, Loved having the bike shop in the family room.

ss1234 02-05-2010 12:52 PM

did you notice the rifle over the "stove"?

acurtis_ttu 02-05-2010 1:29 PM

Becky,

We've been in the house about 4 years. The remodel was done last year. It went way over schedule. Took almost 9 months.

Alan,

My wife picked the faucets. I like the look, but functionality wise they blow. There is no water pressure.

guido 02-05-2010 3:50 PM

Awesome. The rifle is a nice touch.

Looking good everyone.

bg__dereks_mom 02-05-2010 5:20 PM

Steve,
Talk about a lot of work. Your projects turned out amazing.

Here are a few more pictures of how the shower is coming along. (don't mind the red tape over the drain.)

Looking great Becky! What are those two plumbing lines for? His and her toliets?

helinut 02-08-2010 2:59 PM

I would guess his and hers sinks. Unless you like the warm water rinse, but I don't think it's a toilet at that point.

bg__dereks_mom 02-08-2010 3:03 PM

Ha Ha. That is where the vanity will be. Yes his and her sinks. Although his and her toilets isn't a bad idea.

trace 02-08-2010 7:49 PM

Really nice mosaic work. I don't have the patience for that. Here's part of the 1/2 bath I just finished. Same travertine is on the floor, but it's 16x16 on the diagonal.

Trace,

Beautiful work. Love the sink and faucet choice. My Brother in-law,(the one doing the tile work) has a giant sea shell for a sink in one of his bathrooms. It's pretty cool looking.
