The first would provide more front/back strength and the second more side to side. I guess it just depends on which you're worried about more, also where you can place it.

I mounted mine Horizontal, I think Rob is right about support, it's your preference

They are mounted like that because the curvature of the top deck on most boats. The first config matches the curvature better than the second conig.

possibly, I added extra strength with 3/4" plywood on the inside of the boat, either way I would suggest this, it made my mounts super strong and if you are planning on mounting them vertically I would definitely add support on the inside. Good luck.

I dont think it matters any way you put them if you are looking to mount it vertically. They are relying on the bolts to hold it vertically but if it forizontal, mount it front to back for more stability.

I know you guys love my wonderful pictures <IMG SRC="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0> <BR> <BR>The problem I'm having is the top rail of my boat is too narrow so I'm going to have to mount it on the outside side slope thing but every side mount tower I've ever seen seems to create cracks so I was hoping that mounting in vertical on the side would cause less side to side stress and keep it from cracking . . . Does that make sense ?

in my opinion all towers should have flexible joints between the hull mount and the tower legs. As you recognize in your post above the wider footprint will simple encourage hairline cracks. Don't rely on the mounting plate to provide lateral stiffness. The tower needs to do that on it's own.
