well so this is my second board <BR> <BR>plan ... this time I was inspired with Strech shape which I like, but this board is shorter - 4'8" / 20" / 2" <BR>I design my shapes in PC in Adobe Illustrator where I can perfectly control all curves and then print them in 1:1 scale on laser printer <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732294.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732295.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>template <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732296.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732297.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>cutting with my new japan style saw <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732298.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732299.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>ready to shape <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732300.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732301.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732302.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>just simple hand shaping - no powertools this time - its quiet and clean <BR>I put big cardbox (from some ikea stuff) on shaping rack to catch all EPS mess so it don't fall on someones others balcony <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732303.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732304.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732305.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>(Message edited by hawaj on September 07, 2009)

My first board was totally flat at bottom, but this time I tried to make single concave to slight double concave. It was uneasy. I have to cut stringer then sand foam. At first it was slow then I got more deeper then I wanted and so on. Geometry starts to chaning and I started to be unsure about what I am doing. Then I found some youtube video where they are shaping concave with planer so it helped a bit. Result is not perfect and even but its ok and smooth. Still learning. <BR>Now when I look at other boards I can see thing I have no idea before. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>stringer is masked with thin 3mm Scotch plastic masking tape and board is sealed with microballs <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732309.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732310.jpg" alt="Upload">

Paint job was pretty tricky this time. I wanted nice black rails, signal yellow bottom and slight turquoise iris on top where I want to partly put teak veener. Last time work with spray cans was unperfect, hardly controlable and expensive so I decided to buy airbrush gun with small compressor which I got very cheaply. But I have to go thru whole process of to learning which colors to choose, how to thin them, what is right consistency (should be like milk), how to work with gun, how to clean it etc. etc. It was fun but very time consuming plus time with masking etc. Then I found that I should did lighter colors first instead of black ... <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> Whatever, working with colours is fun, I like it especilaly when are water soluble and dont smell so badly <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>masking rails <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732334.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732335.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732336.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732337.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732338.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>I love Black Carbon rails <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732339.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732340.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732341.jpg" alt="Upload"> <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/732342.jpg" alt="Upload">

brewkettle 09-08-2009 10:57 AM

notsobueno 09-08-2009 10:59 AM

All this on a small balcony? Thanks alot. Now I have NO excuses left. <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/wink.gif" border=0>

Any chance you could send me the Illustrator file.... I'd like to try one but don't have a reasonable template to start from....

hawaj 09-08-2009 6:26 PM

Jeff - I just wanted to put some teak wood veneer on top because I like it's texture (but only 14" wide or so)... and becase I like to experiment as much as I can with every new board. <BR>I will try to vac-bag it but I'm not sure if it's better to put some light glass under it to glue it directly on foam? <BR> <BR>J.L., James - Oh thanx, I'm glad YOU like it! <BR> <BR>Jim - You are right. I think I will try to put some vinil tape aroud. <BR> <BR>dtw. - Yep very small room aroud. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/biggrin.gif" border=0> So now is your turn, go and buy some foam you can play with <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/wink.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>Scott - Ok I will send you my template so you can enjoy all that foam fun with us <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/biggrin.gif" border=0>

dmontandon 09-09-2009 8:23 AM

I'd love to make one as well, this would be our first board, please advise what specific tools are required and any tricks of the trade? <BR> <BR>Please send me a PM with the info..

wotan 09-09-2009 12:09 PM

I'm not sure how you guys are building these boards, but doesn't this one still need to be glassed? Or is it a foam-top? What else needs to be done before you can ride it and won't a regular foam-top just break right away?

hawaj 09-09-2009 6:12 PM

Calix - if you search older Surfdad's threads in archive you will find nearly all you need and even more. Surfdad is our shaping guru. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0> <BR>Also look at youtube, there are tons of surboard shaping, glassing, glosscoating, sanding, fin instalation, airbrushing videos. <BR>My first board - hotwiring etc. <BR><a href="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/559019/613683.html?1219436311" target="_blank">http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/559019/613683.html?1219436311</a> <BR><a href="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/559019/620714.html?1220578686" target="_blank">http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/559019/620714.html?1220578686</a> <BR> <BR>I also use some info about shaping from <a href="http://www.greenlightsurfboards.com/" target="_blank">http://www.greenlightsurfboards.com/</a> <BR>watch that DIY timelapse video <BR> <BR>shaping tips <BR><a href="http://www.greenlightsurfsupply.com/shaping_tips.html" target="_blank">http://www.greenlightsurfsupply.com/shaping_tips.html</a> <BR> <BR>pdf instructional templates <BR><a href="http://www.greenlightsurfsupply.com/templates.html" target="_blank">http://www.greenlightsurfsupply.com/templates.html</a> <BR>download shaping stand, glassing stand, boxyrailbands, kniefyrailbands pdf <BR> <BR>BOARD BUILDING TIPS from Foamez <BR><a href="http://www.foamez.com/page_4.html" target="_blank">http://www.foamez.com/page_4.html</a> <BR> <BR>Epoxy Board Building Guide pdf - EPS shaping, sealing, laminating (very helful) + all fin instaltion manuals <BR><a href="http://www.foamez.com/page_2.html" target="_blank">http://www.foamez.com/page_2.html</a> <BR> <BR>(Message edited by hawaj on September 09, 2009)

Robert - you are right, this is just painted sealed final shape from EPS. Not foam top. <BR> <BR>Next will be instalation of finboxes, glassing, glosscating and sanding - after all that small itchy, sticky, dusty mess I can go for ride <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>Only hope I dont glue my pants to my ass like Surfdad <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/rofl.gif" border=0>

Please tell us it hasn't been sitting this entire time, and in fact you have been ridin' it and now you're just catching up the thread?

What was your process for the veneer? - thx

hawaj 07-20-2010 3:17 PM

Sorry it was sitting this entire time

I glued veneer with vacu hope it will keep for a while. :)
First time airbrushing first time vacu bagging its a thrill

hematoma 07-20-2010 3:29 PM

Looks good Petr, I like the veneer look. Some balsa or mahogany and maybe some walnut would look cool as hell also. Hmmm ideas?

hawaj 07-20-2010 3:41 PM

Teak this time

Wow, that sucks. At least you're working on it again.
I must say, this thread, along with your 1st build thread were great sources of information and inspiration for my build, so it'll be great to see this board get finished.

And because it works great with wood, otherwise I will ended with regular matt finish. I really enjoy waterdrops runing zigzag over my teak veneer when I surf :)
