Bought a 2001 Super Air Nautique a couple weeks ago. The boat is in excellent condition just needs a little TLC and a few custom touches.

Here are pics of the boat:

Here is towing it home on the PA turnpike rest stop.

Wow, Looked like a beautiful boat before you even started cleaning her up. Pittsburgh isn't far from here, I have some private water if you want to give her a test sometime this spring
Thats cool, where are you Nick?
In between Youngstown and Akron,OH. I'm always looking for local people to ride with, Like I said I have a midsize private lake to ride in if you ever feel like it hit me up on here.
Is this the same boat that was advertised up there for $8200.00? It sure looks like it! Just curious.
actually the pics were stolen and used on that scam sale post
Thanks, just thought it looked like I saw that boat before for sale. Nice work on the boat,ENJOY!!!!

And....how many stress cracks have you found....?

Let me take a guess.....0

http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/3183/672734.html?1235416698

and the last project of the weekend was adding some mood lighting. Wired in some LED's by cup holders, under spotter seat compartment and under dash. Sorry for the bad pics

This week i should have the sub, amp for tower speakers, a bunch of wiring i ordered from monoprice, and Surepower 1314.

So next weekend:
- mount and wire amp and sub
- run speaker wires through tower for Deafcons
- add SurePower for dual battery setup

Wow! Nice job bro
What LEDs did you use?
Dang Ryan, that is awesome. Nice work on pulling that interior out so you can really get everything clean. Was it very hard to get to the back of the bolts to pull all that stuff off?
it wasnt too bad, just a little time consuming, the drivers panel is the hardest. When pulling it out i couldnt get the cup holder out, so the 2 nuts around there were hard to get to. Putting them back on was easier, especially since i knew where they all were.

and Brett sorry i got tied up yesterday, i'll call u today about the SurePower
The LED's came from here

http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/fp/cat/244685/SFV/32481/set_num/1/menu_num/3

used LED strips and spliced into the courtesy lines. 12" on starboard side, and 6" on port, under dash, and spotter compartment.
I have got a few PM's on how the interior speakers are mounted. I was going to go along the MDF route that a few others have tried. I was able to come up with a somewhat simple way that doesnt involve cutting and vinyl or removing any vinyl. I drew up something to explain a little easier.

To remove the interior speakers on a SAN you need to pull the interior panels since mounts are screwed into the back. Kind of a dumb system that i was trying to eliminate, but the ability to not cut into anything and be able to return to stock if wanted overruled it.

so i removed the existing inner PVC rings, removed the vinyl piping and screen cover, and trimmed the rings a little shorter. after trimming i attached brackets to PVC and mounted speakers onto brackets. Then all was need was to slide speaker/PVC assemble back into side panels and mount with screws from rear.
also have been asked more about the kick panel install:

found some longer machine screws, nuts and some metal strapping (from plumbing section, sold in rolls). I placed the speaker screws through it in place lined up the best i could. Attached straps to existing wood frame on panel and tightened down nuts and screws to compress speaker against panel. The speaker grill hangs a little over the bottom, but when installed you dont see it. I think it looks good, is reversible, and only took a few minutes if you have panel off already.

(Message edited by liquiddiet on February 24, 2009)
Hey Guys-

Looking at Ryan's diagram without actually having the panel off before might look a bit intimidating but will make complete sense once you have the side panels off.

I'd recommend taking the off off behind the drivers seat first as that is the easiest to work with.

The brackets we used were the ones that came with the speakers. They are normally 45* but we just bent them to a 90* to make them work. Super solid!
Ryan: Can you describe the mounting of the brackets to the PVC so the speakers will attach. Did you make the bracket? How flush are the new speakers, can someone lean against them and not damage them. Looks great.
they are just i little wider than 1/4" strips with one hole on each side. One screw through inside bracket hole and into the PVC from inside, and other through grill/speaker and outside bracket hole. what the brackets do is pull the speaker housing against the PVC as well as center it relative to PVC. They are totally secure and you can put as much pressure on them as you can on grills since the speaker/PVC/backing fiberglss are sandwiched together. The reason i trimmed the PVC pipe is so the more i tighten the screws from the rear the closer it pulls the speaker to the vinyl.
Beautiful boat. You said your between Youngstown and Akron. Where do you ride? I'm from Cleveland.
I'm actually from Pittsburgh, Nick was the one who is from OH
Nick rides in his back yard.
just got off the phone with Brett Yates (polarbill) on here and ordered a SurePower 1314 from him, so piece of mind is on its way.

Thanks for you help Brett, good talking to you.
No problem and good luck on everything. I really like what you have done to that boat.
you're a busy guy!!! keep it up
Nice job with the upgrades and improvements. Mad props to you for doing it yourself and making it look choice! It's all going to be worth it when you are out on the lake, in the boat kicked back with the speakers pumpin & the LED lights showing off your ride. Nice job bro!
Good job man! Few things feel better than working hard and getting to see the fruits of your labor. Kudos.
So what do you think about the Defcon enclosures? I am looking at some just not sure about quality and what is a reasonable price..Any input would be helpful..Also, are you putting any speakers in the bow area? Great work on boat, looks great!!!!!
I love the deafcon cans, they are very beafy, and look to be great quality.

Dont think will put speakers in the bow, thought about it but its not a priority right now.
Ryan:
did you ever get to soda/sand blast the motor mounts while you had it opened up? Looked like it was hurting last time I saw it. Salt water is not forgiving.

Madhat78

Sick dude! I didn't read all the posts, but are you planning on making a seat to go behind the driver's seat and make it a full wrap around?
that is an awesome boat! And you are doing a great job on upgrading it Ryan! Id say keep it up, but youre well past that!
Any of you guys happen to have a source for a good grommet? The tower is 3/16 thickness and the ones we picked up as shown in the pictures had to be trimmed in order to get them to fit since they were made for something more like a sheet metal electrical box.

Worst case I think we might use some epoxy on them to keep the grommet in place.

Going to try and get a bezel mocked up to fit the CMD4A in the XMD1 location. Stay tuned for pictures.
Matt, Ryan bought the Sure Power unit from me. We also carry a brand Pico. They have different size grommets that may work. Here is a link to their catalog page with the grommets. Maybe see if they have a distributor on th east coast somewhere or if you couldn't find anything close I can send you some.

http://www.picowiring.com/pdf/PICO-25.pdf
Thanks Brett for the link. We sort of took a step further then we needed to if we want to replace it with a standard grommet since we already ran the wires through the lower part of the tower.

Our hope was that our neighbor is an electrician and was going to bring home some C-type grommets. He said we could run the wire, place the C grommet over the wire and then use a pair of pliers to compress it and let it expand inside the hole we drilled.

We should have them in our hands tonight.
Sweet boat Ryan, Cant wait to see it pimpin on the Mon river. Want to try some sky sking, hit me up.

Nick Lake Milton is nice. Skied there with Chip once before.

Spring is close, I can smell it.
You're my inspiration man! Wish mine was as clean as yours! I'll be trying the speaker switch when I get the upholstery back. I'm also seriously considering pulling the hard tanks.
am I the only one to notice that the pictures show green grass and water that is clearly not frozen? That's not time to be doing projects! IT's time to be riding!

Looks great though, now put it back together and hit that glass
Ha! well i know the grass looked green, but temp was in the 20's
Well after work Matt and I went back to work. More cleaning! We removed the interior and this time the ballast tanks too. After we finish the stereo install we are going to steam clean the entire carpet.

side compartment

It all:

(Message edited by liquid-diet on March 02, 2009)

What little steamer are you using?
Also tonight we got the amp board mounted and also the amp and wires buttoned up. Found away to affix to hull w/o gluing or drilling.

For the amp board we used a plastic cutting board, i got some galvanized L brackets. Bent brackets to shape, welded a nut on the back and mounted them to the end of the cleat screws.

Mounted amp and wiring and the cutting board and then bolted to brackets

pretty neat install!
you could easily get two 750 fly high sacs back there instead of those hard tanks. When they are empty you would have so much more storage room. Then add a big sac up front and you would have an even better wake!
From what we have read adding a locker bag in addition to the factory hard tanks will result is a cleaner wake then the 1500 in the rear.

If we added 1500 in the rear we would need to get a bow sac and I don't think that is needed at all yet.

no, motor mounts are totally fine, cosmetically they look a little rusty but structurally they are fine
I would also recommend the 750's in the rear, over the hard tanks. You dont have to fill them all the way, you will have more storage space, and eventually you will want all that weight back there. I have them in my 01 and they fit perfectly.
Enjoy it! ryan. Adam did a good job keeping it clean.
Ha MadHat78, i thought u were Adam Are you a friend of his?
Nope. Just someone who knew that boat and Adam didn't like the price i offered to him for it. My mechanics, had a hit list a mile long for it. It was a beautiful boat and a good project boat for someone like yourself who wants to customize it. What did you get it for if you don't mind me asking?
Ryan what size battery do you use to power your amps? Does the sure power work well?
What did you clean all the vinyl with? It looks really clean.
Well SurePower is still in the mail, should have it tonight, and for a second battery i had a optima orange top laying around in my garage so using that for now along with the interstate battery that came with the boat. No sense buying new batteries when i have to working ones yet.

We actually havent cleaned vinyl yet, once we finish steam cleaning the carpet the vinyl is next
I ordered the SurePower from Brett and it works great. Super easy to install and it does everything for you.
Can we get a link to the SurePower? Is is superior to the BlueSea brand relay? Brett (Bill?) is your profile homepage your site for these items?
We don't have an ecommerce site up and running yet. The link is to our website, but it is there more for a little info and to get contact information. Send me an email to the one in my profile is you want to get a hold of me or call 800-234-2981 8-4 pacific time. Just ask for me as I don't have a direct line. My name is Brett. Bill is just my alias.
Boat is looking great. Congrats you will love riding behind this beast. This looks all to familiar to me. We did this 2 summers ago. My buddy posted "Spring Cleaning" on Planet Nautique. It's hard work but totally worth it once finished.
Last night got the SurePower mounted, and Matt phased all the speakers. Looks like this weekend should be nice enough to clean all the carpets so we can start putting things back in the boat instead of taking more thinks out
There might be bigger wakes or taller wakes but I love the wake behind a 2001... one of the great wakeboats period...
Let me know how how the steam cleaner works. You saw my boat on PN with the spring cleaning. I used one of those rental things from Kroger and it didn't do crap. If your carpet is matted down like mine is then we need to find something that can pull it back out.
Pressure wash it first with a wide head on the nozzle, this will bring up the carpet first and loosen much of the dirt. Let it dry completely and then use a professional steam cleaner. I would not reccommend this if you have all of your interior in, but while it's open, it will not hurt anything. This is how we have our detailers bring them back.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE DRAIN PLUGS OUT!!!

MadHat
any progress lately
not much progress lately, i was on vacation last week so took a break, will be back working on it again this weekend.
ryan, was wondering what size bolts you used to secure the speaker in the driver's pod. i need to do the same to my boat but it is 4 hours away. thanks man.
they were either 2 1/2 or 3" bolts, they are cheap so if you have to travel far, just by a cpl diff sizes and return what u dont use

(Message edited by liquid-diet on March 20, 2009)

A little update on the mounting of the new head unit. A good friend of mine is a wiz with CF, so i went to him to ask about matching the fake stuff on the driver panel. He said really CF wouldnt match but can get vinyl to match to wrap the bezel.
