opinions for cheap decent tower speakers

i am looking for some surf distance tower speakers.

anyone tried these? They are about $325. what do you think? any other ideas? I do think these being 8 " are a big advantage to get a better/bigger sound.

http://www.amazon.com/Rockford-Fosga...ords=m282-wake

They are gonna be powered by alpine pdx-4.100m bridged to produce @ 4 ohms rms 200 watts x 2.

tyler97217 02-23-2014 3:40 PM

Looks like they are $325 each... Am I reading it right....
For that price you can get some Exile demo stuff or new stuff for just a bit more. Looks like they have some sweet deals on amps right now too....

The comments/questions show as a pair. Hell for that price why not try them they look pretty decent and if you power them and tune them correctly I think they would probably be great surf speakers. Again, for $322 why not try them?

h20king 02-23-2014 4:08 PM

If you want to be cheep you could do these http://www.ebay.com/itm/KRYPT-7-7-HL...item4d18749787
with these cans http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-7-Marine-W...item2c7bca4382
I know their knock off's but you will get more out of them

DavidAnalog 02-23-2014 4:31 PM

You cannot criticize the RockFord Fosgate 8" tower speaker at that price. It's large and that overcomes a lot. You've got to go with a Wetsounds Rev10 to get bigger.
A little known value is the Memphis HLCD that sells for $450 a pair, are 2-ohms, are easy to drive, and sound pretty balanced for an HLCD. New product for less than a demo and comes from the same Asian source.

"Cheap Decent Speakers".....................That would be classified as an oxymoron..

scottb7 02-23-2014 5:08 PM

I didn't say that I wanted cheap good speakers. I only said decent. :D:D

How bout a kicker 4 or 6 pack? kicker 6500.2

My buddy has a pair of these on his boat. They sound really good at surf distance, you can kind of hear them at wakeboard distance, but not real clear.

The boat is also a direct drive, so the engine is right there and a little louder than it's v-drive counter parts.
You can shop around and find them for a steal too.
Here's a pair in white for $100

or in black for $280

I have the 8" ones... But yeah, they're a pretty good value for a HLCD speaker.

phathom 02-25-2014 11:57 AM

Definitely.8" ones will be better, but for $100 you can't go wrong though.
Hey, maybe buy the white ones and have a white/black thing going on. It would match your stormtrooper theme.

Jmorlan 02-25-2014 12:02 PM

I learned last summer with my centurion, that cheap, and decent really didnt go together very well in terms of tower speakers.
Cheap and decent sound pretty good in the boat and on the swim deck. But get about 15-20ft from the boat, you really notice that you have cheap decent tower speakers

do those memphis speakers make it to wakeboard range?

They are an almost identical speaker to another popular 6.5" HLCD, so yes, with sufficient power, they will reach the rider in tow. But with most 6.5" HLCDs, they lack the mid-bass to offset the aggressive compression driver. So not the best sound quality near field.

jhartt3 02-25-2014 5:46 PM

So a pair of the rockfords may compliment this Memphis pair nicely?

scottb7 02-25-2014 5:51 PM

Sounds like the winner for in and around the boat is the rockford's....If I get them in the spring I will report out.

If you are building from scratch, I would suggest going with a single pair of larger HLCDs. Look at the overall cost of a single pair of speaker and amp to 2 amps and 2 pairs of speakers. Better sound quality, maybe less investment, less realestate needed for amp, and maybe less battery consumption.

If you already have one of the mentioned speakers, consider selling and trading up before investing further. The small HLCDs will likely dominate the coaxials near field, almost washing out the goal of smooth and balanced sound. You would want to add independent volume control for the HLCDs or a means to power off the amp for those times when listening near field.

I've personally heard and inspected the Memphis 6.5" HLCD inside and out. Most 6.5" HLCDs are using a giant dome tweeter loaded into a compression chamber and horn (something more suitable for a 8" or 10" midbass). It's simply overkill for the small 6.5" midbass. But they are trying to maximize output and projection even if it's totally out of balance with the midrange/midbass.
Make no mistake, the Memphis is still a 6.5" speaker which is inherently limited by size. However, the tweeter is more balanced in size and voicing with the midbass and it actually sounds more balanced. Just a solid value.

tomcat22 02-28-2014 4:12 PM

what about these?? Anybody know much about them. They look good.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-WA...item486229b8c4

phathom 02-28-2014 6:15 PM

Those are not HLCD. You want that to be able to project the sound out towards the rider.
If you are looking for just in boat audio regular speakers like that will work. But for riding you want a compression driver.
