Is a Viper 8.1L motor 420 HP overkill in a 22ft. boat. I'm looking at a 2002 MB Sports 220V with this motor. Any feedback about this motor and boat would combo would be greatly appreciated. How is the reliability of this motor? Maintenance costs? Fuel expense? etc. Thank you.

I had the python motor in a Nautique SAN 210 for a season and it was awesome. Sounded like a stock car (if you like that sort of thing). Only had it for one season so can't really help with anything else.

How much more fuel did you burn?

There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to a motor.

jarrod 06-19-2013 12:54 PM

More power doesn't mean you will burn more fuel necessarily. The boat should plane out more efficiently.

jonblarc7 06-19-2013 1:04 PM

What is this. To much power you speak of. I have never heard of such a thing.

The engine shouldn't have to work as hard so it might be better on gas.

WTF is a Viper 8.1L? It's obviously not a Dodge V10 as they didn't do one in that displacement and I don't think anyone maranized that motor. My guess is it is a reference to a BBC but a quick Google search didn't come up with anything.

LOL...No. No you're not. Someone is yanking your chain my friend.

2nd the BBC comments. And they are wonderful motors.

I've only heard anyone complain of too much power in a boat when they swim to shore after taking their Outboard for a spin.
It's easy to make it as fuel efficient as a smaller engine. You just don't go full throttle.

Isn't the 8.1 a 454? That would be a Chevy block not a dodge

superair502 06-19-2013 10:01 PM

If there was a v10 viper motor only making 450 go something would be wrong

496, gen 6 gm motor I believe

bass10after 06-19-2013 10:51 PM

Whoa. A quick google search of BBC will yield much different results than Big Block Chevy which is what I'm guessing everyone is referencing.

Gotmods 06-19-2013 11:08 PM

Bbc, aka rat motor.

Sbc, small block, aka mouse motor.

imscarlet 06-20-2013 3:08 AM

Ilmor who supply the MasterCraft engines do the MV10 range based on the Viper V10 but these start at 650hp from memory, so someones either been very busy doing a conversion or you have the Chev 496 marine big block that is usually rated at 370hp or 460hp depending on which one was used. BTW Merc also used to supply and currently now do a 502ci big block engine (Pre and Post the GM 496 era). Do you know who supplied the engine as that will give us a better idea what it is?

A boat of that era probably has the PCM Python with was a 502 BBC....

Yup, it was a $9-10K upgrade and should make 425 or 430, so calling it a 420 is pretty close. It's an absolute beast and really not much worse on fuel than any carbed pcm 351/5.8L

They also are reliable as hell, you just don't find many of them due to the upgrade cost. They are a bit louder, but if you don't like it, throw on a fresh air system. And to answer the OP's question... HELL NO it isn't overkill! If you thinks it's overkill, you have problems :banghead:
