i'm "borrowing" this from another website.

the next assignment is a basic one, shoot a product. shoot it however you want; in studio, on location, in your tub, whatever.

rules
- product must be action sports related
- photos must be shot between oct 27 and nov 24 (1 month)
- one (1) entry per person. you can change your entry as many times as you want up until nov 24th. (i'm assuming you'd have to contact walt to nuke your original submission if you want to change it)
- no borders or watermarks

cmawsr 10-28-2007 7:46 PM

Just curious Joe, but why no boarders?

dakid 10-28-2007 8:15 PM

eh, i pretty much just copied the rules. we'll just stick with that.

tyboarder03 11-24-2007 10:26 AM

wow so this thread kinda went to shizz huh

scott_a 11-24-2007 11:07 AM

Alright...looks like Joe gets to pick another topic for next month since this one didn't have any valid entrants.

cmawsr 11-24-2007 11:34 AM

I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to strobes, and not real happy with any of my attempts at product shots

tyboarder03 11-24-2007 12:16 PM

Yeah I dont have any photog skills so I can't really talk... I just like seeing all the awesome photos this site produces

dakid 11-24-2007 1:31 PM

scott, there are still 10.5 hrs left to enter!

scott, maybe the rule stating no watermarks scared 'em off. after all, if you're not watermarking your pics, you're not a real photographer.

"What is no borders or watermarks? Rookie ..."

It was in the rules....

dakid 11-25-2007 10:51 PM

wakesurf12 11-26-2007 6:46 AM

I was too swamped with stuff to get one done. But then again, that was my fault. I would be down for a re-do but it would have to be a short turn around. (Like a week)

I do like the colors in your Umali. Pretty sweet idea.

Walt 11-26-2007 7:21 AM

<!-quote-!>quote:
if we do a re-do, do i get to resubmit as well?<!-/quote-!>

I'm fine with that.

bakes5 11-26-2007 1:05 PM

I vote no on the re-do. I think the lack of response was due to the assignment. Doing a product shot is frankly just a little too much work for most of us slackers. We actually have to think of something to shoot, then figure out the best way to shoot it then actually shoot it. Way too much effort.

IMHO, the assignment should be simplier and more directed like "star trails", wipe outs, dogs, dogs eating cats, panning action shots, panographic lanscapes of 3 or more frames, sequence shots, etc. Something we can just pick our camera up and shoot or something that we are already shooting.

Anyways, that's just my opinion on how assignments should be created.

Later

Bakes

(Message edited by Bakes5 on November 26, 2007)

<!-quote-!>quote:
We actually have to think of something to shoot, then figure out the best way to shoot it then actually shoot it.<!-/quote-!>

The whole point of these "assignments" is to give those interested in photography a little extra kick in the shorts to try something new. If you don't feel like putting a shred of thought into your photography (or are happy just taking pictures of your pets) then that's cool- this thread just isn't for you.

Sorry to be so abrupt about this (and Joe if you don't agree then feel free to post otherwise- this is your thread, after all), but I think that there are enough good photographers reading this forum that pushing people's normal boundaries could be cool.

Anyways, are we gonna do a new topic, or re-do the product shot one?

dakid 11-26-2007 1:31 PM

scott, i couldn't have said it any better!

Walt 11-26-2007 1:33 PM

I agree with Scott too and welcome the challenge of trying something different.

lizrd 11-26-2007 2:36 PM

Josh - it means you can't add a frame or border around your image and that you can't superimpose your name or words onto the image (watermark).

Ant Bug - that is one clean floor you've got!

Everyone- I like having different things to take pictures of but I was lukewarm on shooting an action sports product. Can we get away from sports? I'm down for another assignment.

bakes5 11-26-2007 5:21 PM

Ouch. Tough love. Thats cool though. Just trying to point out why I think that this assignment got exactly 1 submission (which was a invalid one) over a 1 month period and then was refered to as having gone to "shizz" while at the same time another photo post racked up about 30 picture submissions.

I like the idea of assignments and trying new stuff, I just think they could be a little simplier and less daunting to the average WW poster. This will allow us riff raff to post stuff alongside the pros so that we can see how a simple assignment can result in either an unimaginative snapshot or a masterful composition.

Later

Bakes

dakid 11-26-2007 6:38 PM

1 submission? mine nor antbug's were invalid?

we'll do a re-do but keep the same assignment. there's no reason to change it. if you want a simpler assignment, take a killer shot for this one and you just might get to assign a simpler one for the next one. i'll list the rules again.

rules
- product must be action sports related
- photos must be shot between nov 27 and dec 12 (2 weeks)
- one (1) entry per person. you can change your entry as many times as you want up until dec 11. (i'm assuming you'd have to contact walt to nuke your original submission if you want to change it)
- no borders or watermarks

(Message edited by dakid on November 26, 2007)

scott_a 11-26-2007 7:33 PM

Think of the "assignment" threads as photo threads for those who wish to challenge their skills with the camera. It's not for people looking to post snap shots of their dog. That's what the "other photo thread" is for. The reason why there's so many more pictures posted there is because those were predominantly taken during someone's daily life- wakeboading pic from tow boat, fishing pic, butter water pic, etc. This thread is trying to reach beyond that and challenge people to use their cameras in ways that they don't ordinarily use them.

Honestly, if there's even as many as 5-10 solid submissions for each assignment, I'd call it a success.

(Message edited by scott_a on November 26, 2007)

lizrd 11-26-2007 8:05 PM

uh hello? is my submission invisible? First Aid Still Life? Who the heck takes pictures of a band aid?!?

bigdad 11-27-2007 10:14 AM

What about a contest using certain focal length at a certain aperature?

For example 50 mm @ f/5?

gehennaengine 11-27-2007 2:16 PM

Personally, I think that if a particular assignment doesn't get much response, it shouldn't be repeated. I don't think people should feel like they have to participate in a particular assignment if it doesn't draw them in. Conversely, I don't think the assignment should be viewed as a failure if it doesn't draw much interest. Let's call this one a bummer and let Joe pick another topic for the next assignment.

I didn't participate in this month's assignment because product photography isn't interesting to me. It's not that I don't want to be pushed or challenged, it's just that there isn't much appeal there for my taste. Also, good product photography takes a lot of lighting consideration. I don't own the equipment (strobes, umbrellas, hot boxes, etc.) to feel comfortable doing "my best" at a project like this. If I had an interest in the topic, I would have done my best at making or rigging the equipment I needed... With that said, I probably wont participate in this month's assignment either if the topic is repeated.

bakes5 11-27-2007 2:27 PM

I'm with Jed. It's not that I don't put effort into my pics. Take this one for example.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2003/1935727497_1718f5fbfb_b.jpg

I woke up at 0255 so I could drive 100 miles and then hike up a mountain (well it's hill for people out west) in pitch black so that I could get a pano of the sunrise at the top. Unfortunately it chose to snow at the top and so I got a moonscape instead of the sunrise pano I was looking for.

Or this one that I took in Tbilisi
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2354/1536719412_c2aa3ab6af_b.jpg

Or this one that I drove to within 5 miles of Chechnya then went up the mountain to get

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1196/1460541103_2295747f37_b.jpg

I'm not saying these are great photos, I'm just saying I am not one of the lazy photographers.

Anyways, I'll put effort into something that interests me.

Later

Bakes

(Message edited by Bakes5 on November 27, 2007)

Why can't it be any product? Why action? Opening it up to any type of "product" you may get a better response.... especially with creativity, just Like Lizrd's band aid.

Ok, so I don't know if we have decided to extend, cancel, or whatever the Nov. photo assignment. But I do know this, I was sitting at home today and got a bit distracted with this little ring light that my buddy gave me as an early Christmas/Birthday present. About halfway through my impromptu shoot I realized that I was taking a "product shot." So regardless if the photo is "late" I thought I would share it with your. I also attached a photo of the setup.

Sick photo! Is the light a macro flash or just an everyday light? How long of an exposure did you have to get the star off the bottle neck?

Here are the details

f6.3
1/250
ISO 100

Its a little Macro right light toy thingy that is made for the Holga camera. I started messing with it and my digital camera and had some fun with it. I will post some of the Holga images when I get them scanned. Its a fun little toy!

I think Ryan gets the win on the assignment for Nov. This is definitely an action sport related product!

xcharrier 11-29-2007 9:31 AM

Ryan... were those your MN photos in the most recent copy of snowboarder? It said Ryan Taylor and the photos were in your area... didnt know if it was just a coincidence.

wakesurf12 11-29-2007 9:42 AM

No coincidence. That was me. I can't wait for this snow season. As I type this I have wax all over myself because I just got done waxing the board. Maybe I'll get out tomorrow.

xcharrier 11-29-2007 11:01 AM

Well congrats... nice photos by the way. I've only been out once this season but we've been getting dumped on this last week. I shoot some local pros out here on occasion so if you ever make it out to CO give me a shout.

wakesurf12 11-29-2007 2:31 PM

Will do! I am expecting to get out there some time this season. Just need to find out when.

About the pic- what you see is what it is- no clean up, slight cropping, 30 second shutter, no flash, dark room.

I used a l.e.d. lamp for lighting- it has a single red l.e.d.- which I used for "painting" the front of the fin- and multiple white l.e.ds which I used to light from behind the board, and used smoke to obscure the background.
