DJI quadcopters

im really interested in picking up a quadcopter to do some messing around with. i will be using my go pro with it. was just curious if the phantom 2 is really worth the extra money over the phantom 1? noone around my area deals with them so i have noone to really ask personally. youtube is hit and miss on reviews. seems 50/50 on which one everyone recommends over the other.

I am curious about this as well.
I have the Phantom 1 and really love it. To me it looks like the extra cost for the 2 is in the FPV set up and different battery set up (more efficient?)

That's kinda what I'm seeing. But I heard (haven't looked to confirm yet) that a replacement battery is around 200 bucks for the phantom 2.if u want a 2nd battery for longer filming on the boat etc

just buy both Bill.

I will help you test one, and you can test the other

micah...i love your way of thinking. just dont think my wife would agree with it LMAO

Midnightv10 03-27-2014 11:52 AM

From what I can see, the 2 uses a 5200 mAh battery which is more than twice as big as the Phantom 1's 2200 mHa battery.
The 2 advertises 25 minute or so flight times and from experience I can tell you I get about 10 - 12 minutes with my Phantom 1.

your right those batts are really spendy.. $150 - $200 each Vs $20 - $25 each for the 2200's

That's what has me leaning towards the phantom 1. But the gamble on the 2 is really sweet for taking straight down video and no choppy looks when flying

I just bought a phantom 2. A lot of the reason I went with the two is it is already set up with the gimbal and most of the external wiring to run a FPV setup if you want to add it down the road. It is basically charge & go. I am still working on being able to fly it well. They are very easy to fly except when you have trees around! We have only used for MX at this point but want to try some WB footage this summer-

Quick edit of footage from the weekend. You tube killed the quality -

Tracktor..my main intention will be filming from boat for boarding and surfing. Just makes me nervous flying 1200 quad and go pro over water lol

I am not sure how well that will work. With the operator moving & the subject moving. I am figuring it will work better if you can operate from shore and have the subject near or possibly be in a stationary boating operating the quad. You only have about 15 minutes running time fully loaded and after that you are going down. if over water kiss the whole thing goodbye. The gopro runs without the cas so it would be ruined even if you could recover. There is some talk at www.phantompilots.com about landing gear floats. But they add weight & mass so the handling/wind resistance is affected.........

I saw somewhere you can run the waterproof case on the phantom still

Tracktor - cool footage!!

Runin - yes the phantom can carry the gopro with the waterproof case but if you run a gimble you will most likely have to take it out of the case to fit it on the gimble.

I tried out some filming last summer from the moving boat.. it was a bit nerve racking flying $1200 worth of stuff over a lake but really wasn't too bad from inside the boat..

The biggest issue I had was trying to frame the shot. That's why this year Im going to upgrade to FPV so I can see what I am filming.

Here is a little edit I put together from that session.. In this video I did not have a gimble so it gets a little jerky.. I have since added a gimble and it makes a WORLD of difference...

Russ, very cool! Talk about nerve wracking. How was landing it in the boat? I am still trying to get my home-lock GPS setting to work on mine. I also plan on getting an FPV setup here soon....................

Midnightv10 03-28-2014 11:41 AM

Not to bad landing.. I just clear everyone out of the bow and bring her in...
honestly I have never turned on or used the home lock.. since the boat would be in a different place after the copter takes of, I didn't want to risk the thing deciding to go home and land in the middle of the lake with no boat around LOL... yeah FPV seems like it would be the ticket!

shawndoggy 03-28-2014 11:58 AM

this gimbal looks like it would accomodate a waterproof case? http://www.ebay.com/itm/DJI-Phantom-...item3a8a5598d9

I mean at that point it's all relative though right.... once you've dunked the phantom, the camera is secondary...

Midnightv10 03-28-2014 12:08 PM

Yes that might work if you either shave off the plastic mounting tabs on the bottom of the case or notch out the floor of the gimble

Tracktor... Upload to Vimeo.. I get a better quality there...
