I live on Lake Travis in Austin, TX. We are currently in a huge drought and the lake is about 50 feet below full. We only have about four feet of water at our house and the lake is dry just past our house. A couple of weeks ago we received a huge amount of rain in a couple of hours. This produced some fairly bad localized flooding. We noticed the lake had turned into a pretty swift river with all kinds of crap starting to float down. Then the boat docks started to appear. We had seven docks, a party barge, and a sailboat end up in back of our house. We drove around and found a floating house that had broken free and traveled about a quarter mile away. We counted at least 30 docks that had torn free due to the rising water and washed down the lake. One owner we talked to said his dock had traveled almost a mile. We've only lived here for about a year but this is one of the crazier things I've seen.

thats pretty crazy. where on the lake is that?
|
not very normal for travis, but I've heard plenty of stories of similar happening right down the road on McQueeny. definitely bizarre.

You must be up in the Sandy Creek / Jonestown arm. Dock maintenance on fluctuating level lakes is sometimes a full-time job.

I've been to a couple parties at that house. http://www.floathouseaustin.com/
They have a pool table and shuffleboard in it, which cracks me up. Kinda adds another dimension to those games.

Yeah we live up in the Sandy Creek area. It's funny we were talking to the people trying to move the house back to its original location. The people renting it were in town for the ACL concert. They left in the morning to go to the concert and came back and the house wasn't there.

I can't imagine having the water level fluctuate that much. I've only been up here in the northwest on the Columbia which only goes up and down maybe 5 feet at the very most. Our lakes typically don't move much either.

Freaky!

We just had a similar situation here in Central California. Lake Nacimiento rose 19 feet in about 1 day from a rain storm. There are broken docks and debris everywhere.
|
if you ever see some encapluated foam floating by, grab it for me. I could use 3 of em for my slider.
|
8 inches or rain last night. the lake is going up
~12 ft I cant imagine the hassle with docks right now.
|
thats unbelievable. I'm glad my lake doesnt go any more than 5 feet over the course of the entire year
