Surf Boat Shopping
 

So my dad is looking to get a new-to-him used surf boat and asked me to do some research for him. Main priorities are giant tsunami surf wave, fully automated ballast with nothing extra on the seats (enzo sacs ok), rough water handling (boat will be used in Chelan WA), comfortable room for 6-8 adults, and under $35K.
Initially started looking at Tige 24v (22v?), Centurion Avalanche (Dont think we can find an Enzo in that price range), MB Sport B52, Sanger 215

What else should I be looking at?
Are there any big ballast/hull differences year-to-year on any of these boats that I should be aware of?
Also ease of weighting would be ideal, I understand some of the larger boats are harder to weight?

Sounds to me like you are on the right track. You might be able to find a Tige 22 Ve or 24Ve and those surf pretty good as well. Those came out in '06.

Also look for a Centurion Typhoon, basically an Avalanche but 23 ft! Killer Wave!

Craigslist in the bat area has a sanger v230 with 84 hrs for 30 racks right now.

The Avalanche would be a great choice...IT rides much better than the Enzo in chop. But the Enzo has a bit better surf wave. But the Avalanche was the Flagship and can still compete with todays big boys surf wise. Strictly focused on surf wave and Enzo Trade off for better rough ride Avy for the best of both worlds

Why does the Avy ride better in rough water, its a smaller boat correct? Are there any hull differences between the 04 yr Enzo/Avy's and current year?

And does anybody have any first hand info on a comparison between the Enzo and a B52 V23?

I am surprised the Avy rides much better than the Enzo(230, 233, 240 and 244) as well. They both have very deep V's that go all the way to the transom. I could see the difference in ride between the Enzo 216/220 or whatever that one was. That enzo had a very flat hull almost like a large version of their T5.

An 07 enzo just sold on craigslist with low hours for 35k, I picked up a 24ve with 112hrs for 34k this past winter. If you get a b52 I'd dtay away from the 21ft

Centurion and Sanger are better in rough water than the 24 or 24ve. I don't know about the B52

I had a 2008 b52V23. It was a monster to surf behind! I loved it very much. I miss the gynormous surf it threw up!

The Enzo has a fantastic wave as well. Id say the Enzo is a touch better...but if the price tag is 10k different...id go with the MB... I still own an mb and love them!

This is what the surf looked like behind the B52V23, in floor ballast full (1000 lbs) 800 bag in the rear locker and 300 bag up front...

I can't comment on the Avalanche ride in rough chop, but the Enzo SV233 I have has been amazing. During memorial day, I had it cranked up at 28 MPH just tearing through the chop. You would have thought it was a deep sea vessel ;) Last year, our 21' Supra would have beaten the absolute dog crap out of you. I can REALLY appreciate the deep V hull and how well it slices through the waves. makes a big difference when you are doing things like surfing, as the boat is changing speed dramatically over each wave.

the hull on MB's 23 changed to a deep V in 09, when my Centurion sponsored (2012 244+) buddy was asked which he preferred, the MB 23V (2012) or his 244+, he responded "NO COMMENT"

MB changed the 23v hull in 09? was it not a deep v before 09? Our price range limits us to the 06'ish year MB's....

also, can anybody tell me the difference between the 24v and 24ve hulls? Were there any changes made to either of these hulls over the 04-08 model years?

I believe 2011 was the first year of the V23 Team Wide Body MB. This is basically just a 21 TWB I think with 2 extra feet added in the middle. Their 23' boats before that were the B52 V23 or the 23 Tomcat. Just based of hull shape I would expect the older hull(non TWB) boats to not surf as well as the newer one's. The older boats had a fairly flat hull and the newer ones have a very deep V all the way to the transom. Now that doesn't necessarily mean the older hulls weren't good but I doubt they are as good as a surf boat as the current boats.

As for the Tige I am not sure there is any different in the 24V and 24VE when it comes to the "running surface". I could be completely wrong there though and someone please correct me if I am wrong.

You won't be dissapointed with the 06-08 mb B52V23.. It had a great hull! granted it was a cross over hull. so you could surf/wakeboard/ski pretty well. The newer series Deep V hull improved the wakeboard but basically almost dismantled the boats ability to ski behind.

For your purposes...Id say MB. good quality for a good price.

I speak from personal experience. I have a 2012 F21 tomcat now..and its a great wakeboard boat..but needs tweaking for regular side surfing sadly
