Oh ya black ass scorpion if it matters

Don't know the exact size of the nuts, but do know you need two short handle wrenches to get in there. I've used a plumber's pipe wrench before and it will work. You need to back off the lock nut, and tighten the shaft nut just a bit, then re- tighten the lock nut, while holding the shaft nut from turning.
It should not drip while not spinning, and drip 6-10 drops per min. while in gear. |
What size pipe wrench Chris and I assume you need 2 wrenches right
I think the pipe wrenches are adjustable. Why not just measure it?
Oh duh 2 short handle wrenches
Well it's the length that's the problem I was wondering if there were special wrenches cuz its so tight it's hard ti get your arms under there let alone two wrenches and work
Google stuffing box wrench and you will find some options. You need a pair that are super short just the length of your hand or they will never work under an oil pan on a V-drive. I made a set as I have a cnc machine and i can make more if people need them but I think I saw them for sale on one of the inboard sites for like $20. A must have tool if you ask me.

My '03 V230 was leaking like that, I had to have the packing replaced!
I have an '02 V210. I'll look tonight at my wrenches but believe it was 2" and 1&7/8". Couldn't figure out why they'd use two different sizes bit it is what it is. Not cheap, I bought my short-handled wrenches for about $20 each.

West Marine and others sell adjustable packing nut wrenches. It was cheaper for me to get a set of open end big wrenches from a tool discounter and cut off one end of my 2" and 1 7/8" wrenches to use for the packing nuts on my 215. It has a 1 1/8" shaft size. Distance from the nut edge to the wrench end is now about 6"

^Saved me diggin' in the boat tool box for the sizes.
Dont over tighten or you will burn shaft and waste it. Ck the packing material as the wax gets old & hard . It is cheap and easy to replace once nut is loose.
Thanks guys freakin awesome ! I was told if the shaft giggles then just tighten but if it doesn't and leaks as mine is the repack it.i was also told to tighten it just like an oil filter hand tight is this true?
Just tighten it in the water and you'll know if the drip rate is fine. It should drip, just slowly. When you get it right it is amazing how much less water there is in the bilge. I've forgotten the correct drip rate.
