V drive boat recommendations

Need some input on a 20' V drive boat. (we have a 20' rule on our lake ) I have to have a title that says 20' even if it's 20'6", 8",9" ect.... Lookin for something 2000-2008' , just cant go new yet. Manufacturer, year and model please. We have a Prostar 205 right now that has been great to us but ready for a V drive. Any pics you have would be great. If ya know anyone sellin' one please PM me.

I'll get this out of the way.....
"Buy the one I own / sell / rep / rode behind once / like the guys on there pro team."

The good advice is going tell you to get out and get in as many boats as possible, and test drive or ride behind them if you can.

Also consider your local dealers, who you like and who you don't. Even though we got our Supra used, our local dealer treats us like we bought it from him. While I can't say we considered that too much when shopping, that has made the biggest difference.

Love our 2002 Tige 20V

but yea, get out and test drive em. Almost pulled the trigger on a malibu, took it out, and hated it. took out the tige, and we knew right then.

If you could find a good deal on a 2009 Moomba Outback V, I'd jump on that. It's 20' and has a redesigned, deeper hull for better boarding and surfing.

polarbill 07-19-2010 9:09 PM

I think these are your only options going on what they list on their websites:

Tige 20v
Mastercraft X2(2006-newer)
Malibu VTX
Moomba Outback V(2009-newer I think)
Maybe the Supra 20v(it says 20'8" without platform, that is including the trim plate I think, technically it is probably a 20' boat but no idea what it says on the title.)

centurion falcon v we love ours 20'8' long 102" beam there is a used one for sale on the centurion crew for $31,000 smoking deal

silverlude 07-20-2010 6:06 AM

h20king, thats one nice lookin boat. I will definetly look into that as I saw and checked out a few Centurions last week down at Lk Norris TN. Tks for the pic.

sandm01 07-20-2010 6:10 AM

'06 supra 20ssv. love it. it's def. over 22 with platform, but my title stated 20ft and that's what I pay registration on. great all around boat.
I'd probably shop the vtx as well. sharp boat..

bruizza 07-20-2010 7:48 AM

The Malibu VTX is a great choice. Lots of storage room for a 20ft boat and a great wake. Not sure if you want to wait until the off season but you could probably pick up a 2011 Axis A20 for the price you will pay for some of the other 20 footers used.

cjh1669 07-20-2010 8:41 AM

I've got a VTX and it's a great boat. Sounds like you're looking used. You can get an 07 in 40's

bill_airjunky 07-20-2010 8:59 AM

VTX is a sweet boat.

And MC made a 205V for a few years that is worth checkin out too. Definitely a different price point than some of the others mentioned though.

pcolajosh 07-20-2010 9:11 AM

The MC 205V hull is the stuff of wakeboarding legend. It was the 99 X-Star, then the X-2 and lives on today as the X-1. It gets my vote for a 20 footer, but of course I'm biased...

ixfe 07-20-2010 9:17 AM

I don't own a VTX, and I will still say that I think it's the best choice of the 20' boats... take that Craig! :p

Here's why I like it:

1) It drives like a sports car. It's super quick with the Monsoon and turns on a dime... almost like driving a direct drive... very responsive and agile.

2) It has the best ski wake of any direct drive... expecially if you get the Cut Diamond hull. A great crossover boat.

3) Nicer, plusher interior than the other boats on the 20' list. Malibu just does such a nice job inside.

I came very close to buying a VTX, but I didn't need such a small boat so the size became a drawback for me. But if 20' is you max, this is your boat.

I'll even post a pic for you. This is one hot boat!

Yes, the 205V variants are all sweet boats. But the drawback (and it's a big one for most folks) is the narrow beam. It's only 90" wide which makes it feel very small inside.

Since I'm an equal opportunity pic poster, her is one of my favorite 205v's. I looked closely at this boat too... love the MC board racks. Also, white trailers are rare and sweet!

alans 07-20-2010 9:35 AM

Not to get off topic, but the reason there are not a lot of white trailers is because trailer manufacturers don't want to build them. They need an extremely good paint job to not show rust. I am a big fan of white trailers as I have had a few myself.

silverlude 07-20-2010 11:00 AM

OK, now I'm just flat slobbering. These are some sweet boats posted here. I have purposly not allowed myself to even think about a new boat till finances were do-able and now I'm gettin fired up. Tks for the input and pics, it really helps.

mutau052 07-20-2010 6:27 PM

new tige will be out in a few months, also the new A-20 should be coming out.

ajholt7 07-20-2010 9:38 PM

Love my 2008 Tige 20V.

Alan, my next MB will be on a white trailer... mark my words. :D

But thanks for that little nugget. I had no idea why they were so rare. Now I know. I just like the idea of matching trailer to tow rig. Also like how white is easier to clean and doesn't show water spots. Black trailers are too hard to clean... the boat is always on top of it!

kitewake 07-25-2010 11:56 PM

A 205V has been responsible for many a beatdown I have taken. I have a Sanger V210 which can throw a serious wake when weighted. The 205V is a different beast however. Fully weighted it is capable of a true pro-level wake....not for the faint of heart if you fully sack it out. (3000#...)

I have the magazine this boat was in, like this exact boat, i forget what the mag was called but ill snap a pic of the article. Kinda cool.
I think the red cap makes a HUGE difference, doesnt really look like an 02 huh? got 550 hours on it!

hockeysk8er222 07-26-2010 10:11 AM

An older (2006ish) X2 would def be the way to go, Super spacey and great wake.

moneypit 07-30-2010 3:09 PM

A Tige 20V for the right price is a great ride. Not necessarily the best but it turns on a dime, accelerates well and for a 20 foot ride it can handle rough water.
It is a blast to drive. It is priced attractively and you can still find an 08 or 09 from a lot with deep discounts.

The economy forced me to sell otherwise I would have kept it for years. I had gripes but the ledger sheet had more positives than the 3 key negatives.

How is the Tige 20v for wakesurfing ?

07-31-2010 11:17 AM

I never surfed mine but others have without added ballast but IMHO ballast in a Tige 20V would give a nice surf wake. It will typically require less ballast for the wake needed and it is up to the task then. Without ballast with people in a corner it can be done but ballast should be added to one of the rear lockers and go from there.

Matt 07-31-2010 12:48 PM

I love surfing behind My Supra, I dont have a local dealer, however the OKC Moomba dealer steped up & will order any parts/accesories i need & do all repairs...

I vote Skiers choice boats

Great, if you want a great wave you need weight (like all boats) but less on the tige.

We ride with 200/300# up front under the seats, 1100# in rear surf side locker, and 3 7gal freshwater jugs. Will also be using 2 400# to move around on the seats next time out.

Here is a vid. Towards the end it gets dialed in more. speed was 11.5 with ballast full and 5 people. <object width="400" height="300"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=13347104&amp;server=vimeo.co m&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_port rait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=13347104&amp;server=vimeo.co m&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_port rait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="300"></embed></object><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/13347104">Surfing Elevation 7-12-10 clip</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user4132567">Joey Cavaretta</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

like said above you will need extra ballast with any boat here are a couple picks of my falcons wave one goofy and one of my son on the regular side

Woody 07-31-2010 2:44 PM

Joey, your surf wake looks great. I just started surfing behind my buddies Tige 24V and it's awesome, but it looks like most Tige's throw a good wave. Are you using the enzo sac in you rear locker?
