How long does the Rebel XTs battery last? I know it will vary.

Walt 10-06-2005 7:46 PM

It last a long time if your not reviewing the pics all the time on the LCD or using the flash.
I recently upgraded from the Rebel to the XT and I don't think I'll buy a second battery this time.
I think I took over 500 shots once on the same battery.

shutupandboard 10-06-2005 8:02 PM

Thanks Walt.
I'm about ready to buy the XT. I'll know tomorrow if i'm buying it right now or not!

I'm currently on a lens hunt. I'm not going to get the kit lens so i can spend that money on a more useful lens for me. I can only get one lens right now, so i need a walk around lens. Something short enough to use at birthday partys, but almost long enough to use shooting the kids soccer games. Less than $500 but still a good lens. Maybe i could buy a tele-converter later.

Walt 10-06-2005 9:17 PM

I need to find a replacment for the kit lens too but I'm going to wait till I can get a L series lens.

The kit lens is a real POS IMO but I'm really happy with the 70-200 f/4

Walt 10-06-2005 9:19 PM

By the way If you have a costco around you thats a great place to buy the camera.

Here's our thread on lenses.
http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87667/238454.html?1128261240

Amazon says that the new canon lens with Image Stabilization is out on the 15th of this month.

shutupandboard 10-07-2005 5:41 AM

Walt, what size card/cards to you have?
I think i'm going to go ahead and get the 2GB card.

shutupandboard 10-07-2005 5:44 AM

Oh, and thanks Lizrd. I've read that thread about 10 times. Along with a million from DPReview.

Walt 10-07-2005 5:57 AM

One 1GB and two 256K

richd 10-07-2005 6:51 AM

$650 for that new 70-300 sounds steep unless it's got decent image quality which we probably won't know until there are a bunch out there. I'd go with a 70-200 f4 and a Canon or Tamron 1.4X tele convertor which is close in price if you need a lens now. I know you don't have IS but the image quality of the 70-200 is a known quantity. Or wait and see how everyone likes the new 70-300. If it's typical of Canon consumer lenses there will be good ones and bad ones.

ladythump 10-07-2005 6:52 AM

Walt,

What do you usually have the camera set at (f stop and aperature and "film speed") during the middle of the afternoon?
Also, I want to take some sequence shots, but my Rebel XT only seems to be shooting like 3 shots per second. How do you work the burst mode to get megashots at once?

Walt 10-07-2005 7:00 AM

Ronia, I try not to shoot mid day because the light is terrible.

If you shoot in the early morning or late afternoon your shots will look much better.

I try to shoot at a shutter speed of 1000 or higher. ISO @ 100 most of the time but not always.

I never use the burst but read your manual and it will tell you how to operate it.

You can try shutter priority and set your shutter speed @ 1000 or higher and that will get you started.

shutupandboard 10-07-2005 11:42 AM

Ronia, the Rebel xt only shoots 3fps.

Rich, for only having one lens right now. I don't think 70mm is wide enough for me. You would know more than me, but I put one on at best buy and it just didn't seem like it would work for say...birthday partys and such?

richd 10-07-2005 1:43 PM

70mm is considered a telephoto focal length on a full size imager or film frame body let alone a 1.6X crop cam like the Rebel. It's tough to get by with only one lens and not give up a lot of image quality. I had a Tamron 28-300 for a while but ouch, my L lenses just have me spoiled. My favorite (and only) non Canon lens currently is a Tamron 28-70 f2.8. I seem to have gotten an excellent copy of it and I like it better then the 24-70 f2.8L I had for a while.

shutupandboard 10-07-2005 2:44 PM

The Tamron 28-300 is the exact lens i've been thinking of getting. I understand it isn't an L but that's a hit I think i'm willing to take right now, to have a lens I can use for everything. The key words in that sentence are "I think". I've read alot of reviews and tests on that lens. What were your likes and dislikes? Did it focus fast?

BTW It's only one lens, just for now.

richd 10-07-2005 6:49 PM

It suffers with low contrast shots the same way most non L slow lenses do. In good light with high contrast it's not terrible. Very soft corners at 28mm but reasonable at 300. This was all on a 20D, never tried it on the 1D.

shutupandboard 10-07-2005 9:19 PM

Thanks

mattyboyr6 10-08-2005 12:13 AM

You may want to look into getting a Canon 50mm 1.8 as a suplement to a 70-200. They are only about $80 new and very well liked by many photoG's.

As far as battery life, I have a 20D and have shot over 200 shots, DL'd the shots left the battery in the camera for about a month and then shot another 200+ without charging. And this is in the Arizona summer. Had no issues when i took the camera to Europe for 10 days without charger, either

richd 10-08-2005 8:10 AM

Yep I've got a 50 f1.8 and they're not bad if you get a good one.

shutupandboard 10-13-2005 7:20 PM

OK. I'm suckin it up and getting
Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
and
Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Autofocus Lens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
along with the Rebel XT.

I like the Lowepro slingshot 100 aw bag.

Question: It looks as though the inside of this bag is 8.1". Will the XT with the 70-200L fit in this? So I,m asking. How long is the XT with the 70-200L?
WALT?

Walt 10-13-2005 9:27 PM

Way to nut up Jeremy. You won't be sorry.

The 70-200 is eight inches long and the body is about two and a half.
When they are put together they are tenish.

I store my zoom up right in my case.
