boats and occpuation
Have you ever been on the lake, driving to, or on WW for that matter and seen a really nice boat and/or tow vehicle and thought to yourself. "I wonder what that person does for a living" I'm willing to bet most have. Let's see some boats or rigs and what you do. I can't understand how people have these 60-120k boats and 60k tow rigs. Makes me wonder what they do and what mansion they live in. I'll start the lower side of the bar.

Sounds like you're doing great with all of those toys at 24 years old. Save and invest 10% of your gross monthly income and you'll be purchasing a new boat in your 40's. Things just seem to open up in your forties.

I'm 30 and am a home lending manager for a big bank. I've worked for the same company since I was 17, all through collage and beyond. I started as a temp/admin, and worked up, most recently being promoted and moving to my wife's home town - a dream she's always had, which was cool to make reality for her. We own a home as well, don't have any pics of it in the summer, as we just moved in November.

I don't have pics with me at the moment but I am 37, financially retarded, never saved, I dont even have 10k in the bank anymore. I am the chief estimator for a medium size contractor. I drive a 2008 Ram truck & have a 2002 wakesetter. I have talked to a lot of dudes with new boats, some got life insurance checks, some make 150-200k a year others go without Cable, internet, etc & boating is what they do so a $600.00 a month pyt is the norm for them. When I shopped I said $200 & under is all I am willing to pay as I won't be able to stomach looking at a snow covered boat in the winter with a high pyt. I am very happy with with my boat. My dad passed away at 56 out of no where & it changed my view on saving & retirement so I spend now so I can enjoy my kids before they don't want to hang out with me. I've simply resigned myself to having to work for the rest of my life if need be. I can do what I do till I'm 90 & I look forward to being a Walmart greeter or working at a visitor center so I can talk smack & be a dick & have it chalked up to be old.

Civil Engineer (registered professional) - Primarily aviation consulting Wife - Environmental/Civil Engineer (registered professional) 1997 Malibu VLX - paid cash in full 2012 4Runner - about half paid off Own a sensible home - not paid off 1.5 kids - one is on the way I like not having a boat payment. We could upgrade (not much of an upgrade), but the VLX is just about perfect for our needs. We will only use cash for boat related purchases, so there is no real burden. I could dump the boat on Craigslist for quick cash if we ever had a financial disaster. I suspect that we will upgrade when the kids are bit older (in 5-10 years). I'm not sure if I will ever want to buy a new boat as there are so many great used ones out there. |

My rental property has 70k equity and my personal home has 100k equity. I have no debt (other than my tiny truck/car payment), and I put 20% of my paycheck in savings, another 10% into retirement. ....not another financial discussion..... LOL!
My wife and I have been very blessed. He provided us the ability to work and the jobs that help us pay for the toys we have so that we can spend time with family and friends. We financed the house, truck, and boat - financing isn't evil like some people make it out to be. I think too many people like to brag about being able to pay cash for an expensive boat. Who cares... |

Just upgraded to 2005 Super Air Nautique Team with 160 hours and paid cash for it. No pics yet. Self employed fire alarm system designer You have to get into a position where you can make more money by working harder and faster. That doesn't happen in a salaried position because if you're waiting for that big raise from your tight wad boss who's building his 4th vacation home then it will never happen. I never made a ton of money but I made a big chunk at a time on a few occasions. I also don't carry any debt except my mortgage. I bought a 330K home for 200 when the market crashed and everyone was afraid to buy and I put a ton of sweat equity into it. I pull with my wife's 2006 Cherokee which is paid for. She doesn't work which frees me up to work hard because she does all the house work and takes care of our two kids. My Wrangler is paid for as well and because neither of us commutes we don't put any miles on them. This is my fifth used boat. I lost as much as 2K on each boat when I sold them after owning for as long as 5 years each. This last boat was the first one I purchased while considering resale value. Previous owner still owed every penny I paid for it after owning it since it was new so I imagine he paid over 30k in interest and principle but has nothing to show for it anymore. It takes a lot more than what I've done to pay cash for a new 100K boat but I wouldn't recommend financing it. |

Occupation vs. boat isn't really a good comparison.
Married or single? How expensive of home and other toys. If married, is wife a house wife, have just a crappy job or is a financial contributor to the family? Big note on the boat, small note, paid cash, etc.? You'll find folks that make a ton of money and don't have anything all that fancy and vice versa. Look at these people with 15 year boat loans just so they can get into something new. If you look into my situation, you just see a fairly worn out Chevy Avalanche tow vehicle and a 12 year old Malibu. Then you look and see we have a pretty decent house that is below our means, owe on nothing but that and my rental property, have a focus on putting money into retirement and enough free cash to buy a new wakeboat if we actually wanted to. It's all about priorities and how you manage your finances. On the small body of water we boat, there is a guy I've met there that has ~2 million dollar house on the water w/ a slip. His tow vehicle is a later model H1 (when he pulls it in/out a couple times a year). Boat - 10 year old SAN. Guy could easily have a new boat whenever he wanted, lives on the water where it could be easily used daily. All about priorities. |

We live very modestly and hate spending money. I get buyer's remorse after getting chic-fil-a... it's that bad. Everything mentioned above was purchased used and was a good deal. We drive cars 'til the wheels fall off and we'll have this boat until it sinks. Our house only cost as much as the g25, maybe a little more, but not much. Like i said before this thread was never meant to be a contest. I'm sure many could have bigger or smaller boats. But regardless there are those with 100k boats. I load plan intermodal freight trains for one of the largest railroads in the US No boat, still saving as I want to keep the payments low with a large down payment, I'm starting to think I should go ahead and buy before I'm too old to wakeboard. |
Interesting thread!
I'm 45....yeah, old fart! I'm a teacher and my wife of 22 years is a dietitian. We have 2 high school aged kids. People say we have a lot of toys, but all of them are things we do with our kids...its a good investment. Plus, we live in North Idaho, you have to have something to do. :) We live outside of town on 5 acres with 5 lakes and 2 rivers within 30 minutes of us. The closest mountains are 10 minutes away. To say the least, we like where we live! 2009 Sanger V230 http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...-11-15_660.jpg 2011 Dodge Cummins (aka: Toy Hauler!) http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps80f2fd8b.jpg 2005 Chevy Tahoe (Wife's) and 1993 GMC truck (daughter's) 2004 Jeep Wrangler (mine!) http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...pse14ea0fe.jpg 2009 Arctic Cat M8 (mine) http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...-14-09_531.jpg 2007 Ski-doo Summit (wife), 2005 Arctic Cat M7 (daughter), 2000 Yamaha Venture (daugther) 2013 Sundance 5th Wheel. |

I think it's an interesting thread to a) see different occupations of people in our hobby (example - I didn't know there was a career for locomotive load planners!) b) see the age of said people and c) The priorities of everyone (financially). There's nothing wrong with going out and getting a 15 year loan on a boat, it's just what your priorities are!

My Dad bought a 1988 Ski Nautique brand new in 1988. That is the boat I learned to wakeboard on in 98.
My Dad started letting me take the boat out on my own in 2001. I eventually bought it from him for $8k in 2009. (Which was probably more than it was worth but was a fair price to me considering all the hours I put on it.) In 2011 I purchased a 2000 Super Air Nautiquefor $19,500 cash. A Super Air is the only material thing I've ever really wanted so I guess I'm set for life. :) I am an attorney of 5 years and made low six figures for the first time last year. I have a good group of friends that love wakeboarding as much as myself and so we share maintenance costs. I have never owned a truck or tow vehicle but my friends do. They can take my boat when they please and I can use their trucks when I please. Their have been a few minor issues along the way with people feeling like others weren't pulling their weight but overall it has been great. I'm very blessed to have such great friends. What's fun to think about was how I contemplated buying a sweet pair of $40 board shorts in 2001 and worried about how it would affect my budget and now owning the coolest thing I could (and still can) think of ten years later. Hard work pays off. |
I'm 21 and a Signalman for a contractor on the railroad. No mortgage (yet) currently looking. Sacrificed keeping an older truck for a newer boat. It's a 98 Z71. With my work schedule I'm gone 8 days then home for five. So, I'd really never drive a new truck since I'm on the water every day I'm home. Boat is a 2007 Wakesetter 23LSV. Almost put 90 hours on her already this year!

Malibu and those Nautiques in the last two story posts, I salute you guys, you have superior taste in boats!

I am 40 years old. I am a CPA and work as a Senior Accountant in a Govt Job (electric company) where I only have to work my 40 hours a week and have a generous amount of vacation. I've never been an entreprener, so I just "work to live". I'm married and have a 7 year old son. My child support is probably equivalant to a very nice car or boat payment, and I got divorced at the peak of the housing market and had to write a $50k check to my ex to keep my house. But life happens and my wife now is 1000x a better match for me and we're remarkably happy. The wife works as a Customer Service Rep at the same Utility as I do. She covers her truck/insurance/cell/groceries and I take care of the rest.
I have a 92 Supra Sunsport that I got for under $10k and have been modding. I have a modest 5 year $135 a month boat payment. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i...38835765_n.jpg Our Tow Vehicle is my wife's. It's a 2009 Honda Ridgeline that she takes care of the payment/insurance on. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...UNSET%255D.jpg My summer car is my 98 BMW M3 Cabriolet (paid for) that's pretty heavily modified. It's been my dream car since college. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B...-04-19_555.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-v...00/IMG4498.jpg My Rain/Snow car is a 99 Audi A6 Avant. I picked it up cheap with 180k miles on it. I got a little $5k loan to get it but put the loan on the Jeep to get a better interest rate. We take it up to the mountain skiing and snowboarding every weekend all winter long. I also daily it because the M3 has 150k miles and I save the M3 for nice weather now. Summer mode: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...-41-11_247.jpg Winter mode: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-I...-43-06_613.jpg I used to daily drive my 2000 Jeep TJ before I got all of the above. It's just turned 100k miles and even though I don't use it hardly at all, I don't have the heart to disappoint my 7 year old and get rid of it. It's totally built up for rock crawling and has a mod list a mile long. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q...0906160932.jpg I have a (paid for) Chalet Alpine travel trailer that we use on Jeep trips and for camping: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W...-20-00_241.jpg I have a 2005 ZX-6R (paid for) that I used to do track days on, but lately it's been the occasional zip through the twisty moutain roads... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W...2520Sample.jpg I live in a modest 10 year old 1800 square foot house that I can afford the payment on, but all my equity got sucked out to pay off the ex-wife in the divorce. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...0/DSCF0057.JPG Don't really have much of a savings to speak of. But have a nice retirement though work and we are living life our way and enjoying a wide variety of recreation. Had a friend that needed a place to stay, so we rent out a room in our house, and that happens to offset the child support. Obviously, if I combined all my toys into one truck/boat combo, I could have something a lot nicer. But I waited 20 years to buy my first boat and am really having a blast (despite the tranny getting rebuilt right now) making memories with my family. I tend to buy older toys that look like they're worth a lot more than they are to make my dollar stretch. |
^^never sell your jeep! They are timeless and in the summer evenings no top no doors it's what's up.

And moments like this in the shadow of Mt Ranier are pretty awesome. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C...711_134242.jpg Although as far as cruising around on sunny days, the 10 second power top on the BMW tends to trump the Jeep. LOL. I guess I'm spoiled. |

Words of advice....don't sell the Jeep! You'll just go buy another in a couple years. That's what I did.
BTW: Sweet looking Jeep! Quote:

I'm not sure how this turned into a random bragging session about everything that people possibly own? I will say each individual's career and spendable income matters a whole lot where you live and in my area housing averages 500k and up so people don't usually have those paid off at young ages.
But...since the topic is taking a momentary turn, I'll play along for the moment with one of my toys. Btw I'm 33 and a MRI Technologist, the wifey is an RN. |
