Sanger question

Hey guys. So yesterday out on the water I noticed I had high oil pressure and my engine temp was close to 200. I stopped and oil pressure and engine temp dropped. I checked the oil after a minute and it was way high. Like an inch past full. Oil is clean as it was just changed by previous owners mechanic. What my question is. Is could too much oil raise your engine temp. I'm gonna suck some out after work get it to normal levels and then go test it. Another thing to keep in mind is that no alarm sounded and it didn't go into guardian mode.

Another odd thing. My front ballast fills fine. But when I go to drain it will pop the breaker. Any ideas on that?

dp513 04-11-2014 8:28 AM

Btw it's a 08 sanger v215 with the black scorpion motor

Jmorlan 04-11-2014 8:35 AM

My oil pressure is always a bit on the high end, in my opinion.
Temp, usually 160-180.
I never ballast up to ride though, not yet at least. So that may be why your temps are a bit higher

I think you may be on guard because it's a new boat.

MBBoss210 04-11-2014 8:47 AM

It is very likely that too much oil as raising your temp. When you have too much oil in your engine, it can develop air pockets. When there is no oil passing by and just air, this will cause your engine to not properly cool. Let us know how it runs after you removed some of the oil.

zammer 04-11-2014 9:23 AM

sounds like your bag drain pump is toast

dp513 04-11-2014 10:44 AM

I'll try it tonight and report back. Your right jmo I get paronoid so easily.

As far as the ballast pump I am going to look into it. Hopefully that's an easy fix as well. Thanks fellas

bftskir 04-11-2014 11:42 AM

I run an extra quart per mercruiser recommendation since I run wfo quite a bit. It does not make my motor run hotter. I would be looking at the impeller.

bzubke1 04-11-2014 11:50 AM

As far as the ballast I had a similar issue on my old moomba. Not sure if yours is a similar set up but mine had an empty pump for each bag. I can't remember which bag it was now but at one point it started blowing fuses every time or every other time out. Eventually the pump died and when I replaced it I never had an issue with blowing fuses again. Same thing started happening with one of the other drain pumps and this time I replaced the pump the second or third time it blew a fuse. Once I replaced that pump I never had anymore issues just the same as the first. I don't know what made them start popping fuses when they were wearing out but replacing the pumps worked for me.

Always check the oil on the water, which the previous owner may not have done.
Normally high engine temperature and high oil pressure do not correlate. The warmer engine warms the oil more and that can thin is some to lower pressure. The engine should have lots of cooling capacity to handle extra oil or too thick an oil and maintain the correct temperature.
Oil pressure should drop some once the oil gets to normal operating temperature which might take 5-15 minutes. Engine temperature should be well managed by the thermostat. Unlike a car, the Mercruiser should have one set at 160°. A car might have one set for 195°. On my Scorpion engine the temperature never gets to 180, even when heavily loaded.

obriengotwake 04-11-2014 6:18 PM

Make sure if the thermostat was ever changed that it was not replaced with a standard vehicle thermostat.

bftskir 04-11-2014 8:07 PM

Never trust that the previous owners mechanic knew what he was doing.

bftskir 04-11-2014 8:11 PM

It could be the wrong oil too.

dp513 04-12-2014 9:24 PM

Alright guys. Drained the oil back to normal levels. Took it out. Oil pressure still high and temp was at about 180. Didn't even leave the 5mph zone. She'll be going to sporting edge Tuesday to get checked out. I have zero time to be taking this thing apart. No alarm sounded for oil pressure so I'm hoping it's a sensor. As for the temp maybe there's pieces of an impellar clogged in it. Praying it's nothing big

dp513 04-14-2014 7:39 AM

Somebody's had to have had a similar issue. Anybodyyy lol

Jmorlan 04-14-2014 8:35 AM

Sanger question

Should have bought mine :)
She purrs like a kitten

rallyart 04-14-2014 9:42 AM

Don't be silly Danny. No Sanger ever has a real problem. lol
Hi oil pressure will just lose a little horsepower. It does not hurt the engine. If the temperature stays high that is more of an issue but it comes down to poor flow from the impeller or a blockage somewhere, both of which can be fixed, or the thermostat not opening at the correct temperature, which is an easy fix.

dp513 04-14-2014 9:55 AM

You wouldn't sell it jmo lmao.

I'm going to replace the oil pressure sensor. See where that gets me with that. Also check the impellar and replace tstat and hope for the best. To say the least I've been stressing out even though I know it's nothing big. Just weird to me still that I got no alarm or the motor didn't go into guardian mode. Which makes part of me think it's the guages. I did test the alarm and make sure it worked as well

migs 04-14-2014 9:58 AM

swap your impellar. Start with that.

boardjnky4 04-14-2014 10:02 AM

What exactly was the oil pressure level?

humboldt9 04-14-2014 11:40 AM

Please keep us posted... I have the same engine and it's always helpful to see these kind of threads with problems, diagnosis, and eventual issue resolved. Good luck and hope your back on the water soon!

dp513 04-14-2014 11:56 AM

It's stays around 75 and sometimes spikes to 80

bftskir 04-14-2014 5:57 PM

Worry if it's lower than 10.

rallyart 04-14-2014 6:01 PM

Mine is around 65-75 when cold. 40-50 when the oil is up to temperature. That's with full synthetic.

camassanger 04-14-2014 6:18 PM

Good idea to start with the thermostat. Do the old trick of putting it in a pot on the stove and see what temp it opens up at. I wonder if the impeller has ever been changed? If it ever disintegrated, it could be restricting flow causing engine to run too high. But it doesn't really explain the high oil pressure...

dp513 04-14-2014 8:37 PM

Ya ive been told the oil pressure is really only a concern if its low. Also i am getting no alarms at all and it hasnt gone into guardian mode which makes me think it really is a sensor for both items. Because from what i have read if the engine really got too hot or oil pressure was bad id get one long beep. I have also done the "test" to make sure the alarm is working and it is. Anyways I am going to start with the oil pressure sender, temp sensor, impellar, and tstat. Ill let you guys know how it goes.

Redheadd 04-15-2014 7:42 AM

You never checked the impeller? Ill bet that's your problem.

Redheadd 04-15-2014 7:42 AM

20 min. Boom!

dp513 04-15-2014 2:40 PM

If it's the impellar wouldn't my alarm have gone off when the motor got hot?

Redheadd 04-15-2014 2:48 PM

I don't think mine did and if so what temp is the sensor programmed to

dp513 04-15-2014 7:29 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Alright checked out the impellar. It's all good. Going to look for loose debris.

So I found these 2 plugs. One says depth finder on it other one just mercruiser assy. Look like they plug into eachother. Here's some pics. Any idea what they are?

dp513 04-15-2014 7:31 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Here's the other pic. I'm confused. Ordered a temp sensor today. Along with oil pressure sendor for oil problem. What a pain in my ass. Just love working on this thing after I come home from a 12hr day

rallyart 04-15-2014 9:43 PM

Mercruiser wiring harnesses are standardized and have extra plugs and wires normally. I don't know what those plugs are specifically.
You'll find the problems eventually. Right now you just get to understand everything on your boat better... (OK, I guess that's not really helping right now)

Redheadd 04-16-2014 6:22 AM

You checked the screen at the other end of the hose that connects to your impeller housing?

dp513 04-17-2014 6:57 PM

So I checked screen it was clear. I changed impellar temp sensor and oil sender. Go to start and I have no power to the guages. What did I unlock. Fawkkkk

chilidog 04-17-2014 9:09 PM

Danny I would suggest draining all the water out of your motor with the blue plugs. Hook up a hose and run some fresh water thru there with the plugs out and give her a good flush. Put it back together and see what happens. Chevy 350s will not get harmed at 180. Like someone said 195 is regular t stat temps if not more nowadays. My oil pressure fluctuates from 40-60 while underway I think it may be a sensor or gauge issue. Don't overthink your boat motor. As long as it's got a good impeller and clean oil and fuel delivery it should be ok. A full blockage of your raw water would cause your motor to get super hot. 180 isn't bad mine will run 160 to 180 depending on how much idle time or higher revs sustained etc. check all the plugs you molested for the gauge issue

chilidog 04-17-2014 9:11 PM

With the plugs out flush motor with engine off, to clarify

dp513 04-17-2014 9:23 PM

Update. Gauges start working again. Starting to wonder if maybe my whole guage cluster is bad and that was what was causing the temp and oil pressure flucuation!! Ill take it out tomorrow and report back.

Jmorlan 04-18-2014 6:34 AM

Quite possible.
My speedometer doesn't work. Haven't cared enough to rip into it yet.
Like I also said, I feel my oil pressure is a bit on the high side as well. But it runs great.
Could just be a gauge issue

dp513 04-18-2014 6:42 AM

Ya the oil pressure doesn't concern me much. It's the temp. Last thing I wanna do is fry the motor. We will see how the guages work tonight!

Jmorlan 04-18-2014 6:44 AM

Get that truck sold that you have listed at 42k, and a new motor won't be a problem.
LOL

dp513 04-18-2014 7:03 AM

Lolll if I sold it I was just going to go buy my buddies Dmax. I was waiting for a rich farm kids mommy and daddy to buy it for him but it looks like that's not happening lmao

jeffrycke 04-18-2014 12:10 PM

'08 Sangers are known for having gauge issues. I have the same boat, I had to change the oil/temp cluster, and there are days that the oil press. in the new gauge cluster works, then doesn't. If you call Sanger, they can get you a new cluster, but it isn't cheap.

camassanger 04-18-2014 3:08 PM

J.mo, when the speedo isn't working the first thing to check is the little hole at the end of the plastic legs sticking into the water at the transom (the pickups? There must be a word for this thing, but it isn't coming to me). In the great NW, there is often small sticks and wood in the water, and when they get hit by the boat often a small wedge of the wood gets stuck in the sensor pickup. Use a small drill bit and air to just clean it out. Anyway, hope this helps.

dp513 04-19-2014 7:59 AM

Alright. Update after water test. Boat ran fine. Oil guage was still spiked. Temp would hop between 160-190 but would like bounce. Same with fuel guage. My issue with the guage not turning on is that I think the medallion computer is messed up. I have read they go bad. Anyways I'm out of my mechanical ability level now so it's going to sporting edge. When I find out what's wrong I'll report back

dp513 04-28-2014 8:50 AM

Does anyone know how to contact sanger or medallion guages and actually get a response from them? Still having this guage issue.

ryanw209 04-28-2014 9:29 AM

Did you not take it to sporting edge? I have found the number to Sanger on this forum before but I'm too lazy to look it up for you. Here is what came up from a quick search on Apple maps (559) 485-2842

I have a 2006 and my oil pressure gauge is always way up while underway but my temp never goes up.

RanchDweller 04-28-2014 11:33 AM

Sanger direct. Eric in Parts = 559-485-2842

bftskir 04-29-2014 10:50 AM

You could take it to Jim at Topside Marine in san jose. He can fix it. When central valley gets stumped they take it to jim. He only works on inboards and he's a sanger expert.

Redheadd 04-29-2014 4:49 PM

Agreed^guys at topside are cool as **** and will fix you up.
