'11 Trailer Toe in/Alignment?
 

my '11 LSV has a single axle boatmate trailer. and since just after we bought it i noticed the left tire was going bald out the outer edges. now typically this means underinflated. so i always kept the psi exactly at the recomended 60 or 65 (i cant remember exactly what the tire says right now) and always kept both sides identical and the manufacture recomended. now the left side tire is completely bald on the outer edges. the center tread of that tire is really good. the right tire looks brand new.

i havent measured for alignment yet, but i did measure for toe. and the difference from the front measurement to the rear measurement (measure to center of treads all the way across the boat to the other tire) is 1/2" difference. or 1/4" off from square.
is toe in on a trailer normal? what is within range or should they be perfectly straight?

any ideas on what if not the toe is causeing the odd balding on one side?

I can't answer your question, but I have one of my own. Isn't that a pretty big boat for a single axle trailer? I don't know the ratings, but that sounds odd to me.

yes it was available with both single and double axle. my last one was single axle as well. its a must for my parking situation. never had any issues and we tow this thing to other states and in the texas heat ;)

Its because you're trailering that beast with a single Axle ;)

I can't imagine this but what about camber? If it has some kind of goofy camber along with weird toe goin on you may have that problem. But I'm talking out of my ass so...

If your tires are toed in will wear the outside edges. The difference of 1/2" ia too much. The camber could be out too on that side leaving the other side with normal wear. A trailer or alignment shop can fix it. There may be some adjustment on the trailer but probably you just wind up bending the axle to get less toe. It does not take much. If you don't have enough toe in the trailer will wander more.
It is worth fixing and should not be difficult. Just make sure they align the tires relative to the hitch. It might have hit something on that wheel to bend it out of shape.

Sounds like more of an issue with the left wheel camber.If it was a toe issue both tires would be worn.It does sound like too much toe[1/2"].It should be about 1/4".

heres the weird thing, the outside AND inside tread of the LEFT tire is completely bald. the center is perfect. camber would make only one or the other bald, not both. now toe im not sure what ill effects it has on tire wear. dealership has a call into boat mate.
i just re-read my first post and realized the word "outside" was misleading makes it sound like just the outer tread was wearing.

Camber will cause inside wear, too much toe should cause outside wear as mentioned. I would bet your pushing the limit on your trailer which would cause a camber (inside) and too much toe on that side should be causing te outside. I am by no means an expert on this my fried just redid the suspension on his m3 and we discussed this

Too much negative camber and too much toe in on that tire.That is if most of the wear is after it was properly inflated.

drop a plumb bob at the trailer hitch, measure to each tire...they should be the same, if not adjust.

being a straight axle i never thought there was any toe or camber.
