I've totally been wanting a winch for so long now...it's not even funny..my friend was gonna buy one with money from his fourwheeler after he sold it...but that didn't go through...we're talkin about goin half/half on one...hopefully we can find one for 1000 bux...does anyone around central Illinois (or anywhere in illinois basically) winch? I've got a boat and jet ski both but winching just looks like a freakin blast.

Build one. My projected budget is $400 and it looks like I'm right on target right now. I've only used basic hand tools and free stuff. I had to buy bolts and pillow blocks so far and I'm only in it for $100 right now... check it out:
full build:
http://s474.photobucket.com/albums/rr101/lukerdl/Winch%20Build/?albumview=slideshow
Teaser:

i would build one aswell! im building mine as we speak! when im all done i should have about 500 in it! i have a welder so mine will be welded. but if you dont have a welder then bolts work the same!

lffreak139 03-26-2009 8:09 AM

yeah I thought about building...my dad knows a ton of guys that could weld a frame together for me. so maybe that'd be the best path to go

captain_542 03-26-2009 8:54 AM

heres our first try at it. metal was around 100 and was welded. 6.5hp briggs brand new was 239.99 and the misc parts for the axle and spool and fairlead was around another 150ish. so 500. we just got a torque-a-verter as well as a bigger axle and pillows which was another 250. so all spent was 750 but if we did it right the first time it would have only cost 600. do it right the first time.

If anyone is interested... I got a donor motor for my winch and decided to part with the initial motor I was planning on using. 5hp briggs:
http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/8/681990.html?1238178281
