Heater Core Repair/Replace

I have a three hose heater core that has developed a leak and from what the local radiator repair guy says it can't be properly repaired. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this same sort of issue or if anyone knows where to get a replacement core. Again it's a three hose/vent unit that's about 14x6 inches in size. Thanks...

I don't know your unit, but you should be able to remove the heater core from the box with the hoses. They normally use car or truck cores, so you just need to find a replacement or close match. I took my core into pep boys and they found me a close match for less than $30...It would have cost me a few hundred for the oem box at the dealer.

I did the same thing as Shooter at our local Napa. Seems like it was a core from a 90s Mustang.

Wow. I'll give it a try. After poking a round awhile I found the heater manufacturer has replacement cores. Their name is HeaterCraft and the replacement costs around $160. Pretty simple design but the radiator is an odd size. Worth a try hitting up the local NAPA store though. Thanks again....

try to find out what car or truck core they used if you want to save money. heatercraft wated 130 for mine. i got it from Oriellys for 20. had to make a very slight modification to the box.

I replaced a 2 vent version a couple of years back with a core from a 64 Ford Futura...semms like it was about $15.

My 2 vent core was out of a '76 Ford F100 or something. Poke around on the internet and there is a site out there that has pics of the cores form cars/trucks and their dimensions, that's how I found the replacement for mine.

It's funny, I actually live right near Heatercraft. And have had some contact with their R&D dept when they developed the infamous Y hose adapter & the dual core heater. But $160 for a core replacement??? That hurts.

I've done this on a couple of boats over the years. I found some old notes of mine where I thought this was the right core: Napa heater core p/n 6603100

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep poking around. No joy at Napa today but there's gotta be something farily close in size that will work.

Try autozone and O'Reilly. Mine was a part for a Ford LTD. Had to do a slight mod to the case with a dremel.

I think the Napa p/n 6603100 will fit the two hose heater and not the three hose like i have. Bummer...

Is the heater core different, or is it just that the 3 tube heater has 3 air tubes?

shawndoggy 06-21-2011 11:43 AM

the box that the tubes come out of is longer, so the core is also presumably longer than the 2 tube box.

jhgsupra 06-22-2011 6:00 PM

Shawndoggy is correct. The box is about 16" long which is considerably longer than the 2-hose housing (9"approx) which is the one that fits the Napa 6603100. The best price I've seen so far is from Skidim for about $120. The $120 includes a new core and the 3-hose housing box as the replacement core doesn't fit into the old 3 hose housing, go figure...
