I just ordered one for my wife. Any opinions or suggestions? It will be our first SLR.

I had one, it puts out a nice image. Get the 18-55 IS kit lens with it, that's a nice started lens.

The one I got is coming with this lens:
Tamron AF28-80mm F/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Lens

Any opinions?

Looked very hard at one but with newborn just couldnt get the funds for it. The XS is a nice camera, we currenlty have an XT film camera and the XS has most of the same features, its nice because it takes great photos AND is simple to use. We have a 28-80mm and a 80-300mm lens for the XT, the 28-80 gets most of the use but the bigger lens is nice to have.

We just got the Rebel Tli & upgraded the lens to the Tamron 18-270 great lense for me.

would suggest looking at a 40d...

IQ is not totally dependent of pixle count, and pixle count doesn't directly affect resolution. The 12 MP will only let you print larger, though the IQ may actually be inferior. Afterall the XSi is a consumer model, and people new to DSLRs would most likely consider MP count as the sole measure of a camera's "prestige". Afterall Canon's top high speed 1D Mark 3 has only 10 MP (some people consider the 40D a baby 1D Mark 3).

If you use the camera very frequently, perhaps in less than ideal condition, the 40D's partial weather sealing and magnesium alloy body will definitely help.

If you have average or above average sized hands, the 40D will be much more comfortable to hold. It's also more convenient to use with the two control wheels.

I bought the XS not the XSI it is 10mp.

richd 12-02-2009 5:44 AM

In the case of the XSi Canon put one of the best sensors ever found in a aps-C body. IQ is not inferior in any way, shape or form to the 40D. In fact this guy is claiming it's better then the 7D!

http://darwinwiggett.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/the-canon-7d/

Back to topic: Like to see some shots from that 18-270 Tamron.

ajholt7 12-02-2009 12:57 PM

I didn't buy the XSI. I bought the XS

richd 12-02-2009 3:42 PM

XS is fine, what do you want to know? That 18-270 Tamron might make a nice all in one combo.

skull 12-03-2009 6:56 AM

My wife has the XT which is older than the XS and uses the $90 50mm f1.8 100% of the time which is sharp as a tack. I'd highly recommend that investment. It is the best $90 you can spend for Canon.

That is why I went with the 18-270 so I would not have to be changen lens all the time, I will get some pic's up

being new to slr cameras, how close of a shot of wakeboard rider could one get with the XS and the kit lens 18/55?

wakedad33 12-05-2009 8:21 PM

Not very close, this is a old shot with a kit lens at 55mm, rider at 80 foot rope.

thanks randy, feedback I was looking for. money is tight, it appears something in the PowerShot family, might fit my budget and get closer.

wakedad33 12-06-2009 5:20 AM

CD, no problem. Here is a review of the top 20 most popular point and shoot cameras if you want to go that route.

http://digital-photography-school.com/top-20-popular-point-and-shoot-digital-cameras

mcdye 12-06-2009 4:49 PM

thanks randy,
I was looking at the PS sx20 or the sony CS hx1. they seem to be in between the ones you listed and slr..
