50-60K used boat suggestions?
 

Apologies for starting another "help me pick out a boat" thread, but after a fun summer with our Tige 21v (2001), we are going to consolidate and sell our boats for something else (we also have a Yamaha that we have had for 7 years). The wife would like something bigger (we often have 9+ folks in the boat) and newer. Me? I am not unhappy with the 21V, but since we are getting a different boat, I hope the wake will be even better (for surfing and boarding), and snap-in carpet would be nice.

Any boat we wind up with has to be able to handle rough waves and have a decent freeboard. As close as we are to the Chesapeake, when the wind is blowing the wrong way the waves get whipped up quickly. Riding through it is unavoidable during the summer. I don’t expect a Center Console fishing boat type of ride, but we don’t need our teeth jarred loose either! Our current Tige fits that bill (although a little more length would not hurt).

Our budget is 50-60k, if I am lucky I may find a 2010 24ve in the upper end of that range. I could stretch to an RZ2, but the family does not like the picklefork bow (and there is concern about water over the bow). A Z3 would be great, but that's going to be out of the price range.

I am trying to stay open-minded, what other boats should I look at?

There are only two inboards in this area, it is not a hotbed of inboard activity (at least not yet, a lot of neighbors have been asking us about wakesurfing). Since there are not many boats or dealers nearby to look at, I can't easily ride behind different boats and see what feels best. I am hoping to get some advice from the folks here that have been on the different boats. We could fly somewhere to check out a boat, but unless we are pretty sure about the boat going in, I don't want to hassle someone to take their boat out to go 'tire kicking'.

So have at it... is the 24ve a good place to start? If so, are there certain years/options to be aware of (snap-in carpet in 2010, Tige cruise control vs. Perfect Pass)? What other boats should I look at? Would a test drive of a Z3 have enough "wow" factor to increase the budget? Will the surf and board wakes be noticeably different from a ballasted 21V?

Why not buy a brand new Moomba Mojo?

It has snap in carpet, digital cruise, can easily hide 3000# of ballast, is easily surfed with an 1100# bag in the corner and an IBS, and will set you back less than what you are looking to spend.

You can buy a mojo for less than 60K? Last year when i looked dealer wanted over 50K for a OutbackV and mid 50's for LSV's. Mojo's were well into the 60's before tax, license etc. Have they come down?

Moomba doesn't disclose prices and have territorial dealers, but I would bet that with $60K in your pocket, you could buy a 2014.

Any boat that lives at a dealership over the winter has taxes and interest to be paid on it while it sits.

This means buying in the fall can pay off pretty well. I bought my 2013 last fall, and the 2013 model prices are still higher than what I paid in August of 2012

Nate a trailer to hold that boat is $5K at least so then you are at 60K. Add their doc, tax, reg and you add another 5K. So then you are at 65K and thats for a 2013. Every dealer is different. Our Moomba dealer acted like he was dying when I implied I would like to buy for atleast 15% off MSRP. He told me 5% off was the best he could do without losing money!! Maybe you have a dealer who is selling much lower.

That dealer for me is the Tige dealer here. I bought my 2013 last fall for 10K cheaper than some where paying around the country this spring.

I appreciate the Moomba suggestions, but unless I am looking at the Moomba site wrong, the Outback V and the LSV are not larger than our 21V (the LSV is 6" longer, the Outback V is shorter). And they both have a narrower beam than our Tige.

The wife wants something bigger than 21 feet, who am I to argue?

Jeff - based on your "big water" criteria --- you will want to be looking at a Tige or a Centurion.. Malibu's, Moomba's, MC's, etc mostly have a flat hull that will beat you to death in the chop..

Tall freeboard, nice wakes and big water capable sounds like Tige to me.. I'd take a look at the bigger Centurions as they can also fall into your price range quite easily.

That's why I recommended the Mojo (the picture I posted).

Its 22.5 feet with a 99" beam.

A used 2013 would easily come in under 60K, and I believe with a little work (depending on dealer) a new one could be had for really close to 60K.

Try a MB b52 23 WB. They have an amazing surf, Freeboard and are very value priced. Fit 15 people and you would be supporting a local California mom and pop shop. You could get a brand new one for around 60k. If you don't mind a couple years old you can pick one up in the high 40s.

I am pretty sure the OP is in the NE as he stated being close to the Chesapeake, I think Cali boats would be a little far to deliver unless it was an insane deal lol.

I'm an Axis owner - I love it.

I would NOT recommend it for big water. I take mine on lake MI occasionally, and even on REALLY calm days it can get sketchy.

We have an 09 Supra World's 24V for sale at Smith Mountain Lake, VA in your price range. The wake for both boarding and surfing is awesome. I usually load up an extra 1500 lbs on the floor since I was able to get some sacs for cheap. Otherwise I'd just upgrade the locker ballast bags to 800s instead of the 400s it has. Then put one 550 in the walkthrough and a sac under the front seats to balance the additional weight.

Handles choppy days fairly well as long as you're not doing more than 30- 35, then you'll get some air time, hah. PM me and I'll put you in contact with my dad. If you're in the vicinity of the Chesapeake, we might be in range to set up a test drive.

In that price range you can get a nice used Centurion Enzo. I have not ridden in another inboard that takes chop like the Enzo. It is unbelievable in rough conditions. I had a Supra 21V that would beat the crap out of you, and it was a 'V' hull, but no where as deep as the Enzo. Supreme also seems to have a really deep V, but I've never ridden. But we can be on the Lake on July 4, cruising at 25 MPH, and it just cuts through everything. To me, its one of the biggest underscored advantages of the Enzo hull.

The one thing of concern is that the Enzo does not have a ton of freeboard. Certainly less than the Tige.

I gotta say it, though I don't own one, but I rode my first epic wake on sunday and it blew me away! Ballast was stock, not even completly full and with 4 people on the boat the wake was massive and so poppy. I don't understand how this brand hasn't taken over, it really was incredible. Owner said it handles rollers and chop pretty well, but thats on a medium sized lake so I don't know how it would do with some serious chop. I've ridden most other boats in that range x-stars, 230s, and more, but nothing has really been that much better than the other till i rode epic. I was looking around and they come in right at that 60k mark too. Hopefully you can demo one and see for yourself.

Look At a new MB 23wb. We have one for about 6 months now. The surf and wakeboard wave is awesome. It is should be in your range.

dude, the closest dealer is like 10 hours away from him. MB is a terrible choice.

Not sure how far you are from lake Anna, but there is a centurion, and epic dealer that I'm sure you could schedule to demo both the same day

Didn't read it all but if your in the 50-60k range get a brand new MB B52. The boat sells itself and has snap in carpet 1800 lbs of stock ballast that fills in no time a bad ass wake (and I ride my nautique 210 with 3500 lbs and G23s, it's comparable no doubt). The wide body also drives like a dream and comes with perfect pass if I was getting a boat in that price range id be getting a B52 no questions asked

We are in Northern VA, and boat in the Northern Neck (Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay). Lake Anna is not to far away, that's where I found our Tige. Neither is Richmond, that's where I picked up our Yamaha. Thanks again for those suggestions.

I still need to focus on boats that handle big water well, the group has given me a great starting point. Feel free to follow-up with any other info as well.

I would throw a Centurion Avalanche in there as well as the Enzo. The
Nautique 230 also has a bit deeper v than most wakeboats it's size. Supreme comes from a similar factory operation as the Centurions. Also great deep v rough water rides. And well Tige is def up there in rough water rides. I know you are looking 22ft but the pre 2013 Z1 is like a school bus in the cockpit area. Sangers also have some great rough water rides but they are going to have the least amount of freeboard in the group

Sanger 237 would be the exception. Lots more freeboard on that boat than other sangers. Finding one on the east coast tho....?

With 850 hours i'm sure there are better options out there.With 50 to 60k you could buy new or very recent model year with under 100 hours and enjoy many more seasons of use.
