im looking at buying an old boat to restore and soup up as a wakeboarding boat. i've heard the older nautiques are great.

what old ski boats (and what years) are best for souping up as a wakeboardig boat. i know older boats are heavier, and the hull shapes arent as perfected for making small skiing wakes. what are older sangers like?

also, for nautiques, what years should i stay away from?

For the Nautiques, The 2001 model made from 1982-1989. I owned an '82 and it was/is a great boat. I sold it to a friend and still enjoy it just as much as my Super Air. Good Luck and have fun, I hope to have the room and resources to restore a boat soon.

what about old sangers and mastercrafts? how do they compare to the old nautiques?

yooper 08-13-2004 10:27 AM

I have an '87 Tristar 190, and with weight it has an excellent wake. Nice shape, firm, and a clean lip.

afxsguy 08-13-2004 10:34 AM

how much weight have you put in it?

sangeria 08-13-2004 10:46 AM

My cousin and I just picked up a '96 Sanger V210 (same hull, wake, etc. as brand new) for $16k. The deals are out there if you're patient and now where to look.

sangeria 08-13-2004 10:47 AM

Correction..."if you know where to look"...don't want to get slammed for grammar!

yooper 08-13-2004 10:48 AM

2 full fat sacks. 1000 to 1200 lbs. probably? It definitely gets better when a bunch of people are in the boat also. I'll sell it to you if you want..... With 2 kids now, I'm probably about ready for the interior space of a V-drive.

stephan 08-13-2004 11:15 AM

SANGERIA, that's what I really want to do. I've been scouring boattrader, looking for a 96-99 V210. Where did you find yours & how many hours did it have on it? So far how's it treating you? As for older boats I've ridden behind an American Skier that was nice, the old Nautiques & the wake in my profile picture is off an '83 Ski Supreme.

sbt3 08-13-2004 2:24 PM

I second the Mastercraft Tri-Star wake. I have one and love the wake. I run around 1600 pounds in the back and 170 in the nose. The gas tank is in the nose so you don't need as much weight up front. The wake is alway consistent. You should be able to pick up one of the tristars fairly cheap.

absolutofft 08-13-2004 2:52 PM

What kind of a wake does a maristar 225 vrs throw?

afxsguy 08-13-2004 5:19 PM

jamie... just curious how much

yooper 08-13-2004 6:28 PM

I'm not really ready to sell it.... I'm kind of attached to it after all the work I've done. All new upholstery last winter, all new graphics, back seat converted into custom sundeck, Monster Tower with 4 Hella Halogen lights, automatic ballast system, neon tubes under the gunwales, Infinity Kappa stereo system with sub and drivers-side remote, 100 amp alternator, New 4 blade prop, new carb, electronic ignition conversion, tandem axle trailer with 4 brand new Good Year Marathons, all LED lights on the trailer. Plus it only has 450 hours.
If I could get $10,500 I'd sell it. It literally needs nothing.

afxsguy 08-13-2004 7:00 PM

i have a chance at getting a 1981 Ski Nautique... im sure being as old as it is, it's got a great wake. have any of you wakeboarded behind an '81?

gunz 08-13-2004 7:18 PM

1990 Sanger.2 sacks = real nice wake.

afxsguy 08-13-2004 8:22 PM

Rich, that's pretty sweet looking.

Okay I found out more infor on this '81 Nautique... its from a guy my dad knows well. He wants $6500 (canadian dollars) for it. That's what, somewhere between $4000 and $5000 USD? (I don't know conversions).

Apparently he bought it restored off of a ski school, and it ran great for a year. Then it hasn't been used in over 5 years, just stored. He says it runs (maybe needs to be tuned up from storage) and the hull is great. Just needs some interior work.

How does that sound to you guys? If the boat is running and in good condition like he says, I think it would be worth it.

ramhouse 08-13-2004 11:46 PM

Look for an older Master Craft...Mine is a '93.
I carry 500lbs. of lead always..all hidden in little spaces..add three people and a sac or two, it will do what you want it. I have 1,020Hrs. and it still running. Oh ya, a tower on older boats is a must! Tried the pole and with the tower and a three blade it works wonders.

yooper 08-14-2004 5:16 AM

Sounds like a decent deal on the Nautique. It will be fun and rewarding to restore it. You will definitely spend more money than you think it will take to restore it. I'd hate to add up the amount I've spent.

yearling 08-15-2004 5:35 PM

I spent an entire year looking for the right deal on an old 2001. My patience paid off and we found a great deal. We picked up an 86 2001 with 430 hours and it came wakeboard ready with a ballast sytem and a custom tower. The whole boat is in exelent condition. We put about 1300 pounds in it with all the sacks full. 600 in the back, 250 to 300 on each side of the engine( slid as far forward as possible), and 200 in the nose. When we have a few people in the boat with us the wake is over knee high. Its pretty steep and really solid.

i dont think it will cost a lot to fix it up. this boat is suppose to be running, and in good condition for a 1981. hull is good, motor is good, just needs interior re-apholstered. we are going to take a look at it this friday (the guy is letting us try it out on the lake!).

also, my dad owns a machine shop... so we are making our own tower. during the winter i am going to build my own ballast system with a pump. i'm still doing research on this though.

anyways i guess we'll see what this boat is really like on friday.

anyone else ski behind a 1981 nautique?

sangeria 08-16-2004 12:48 PM

Make sure you check the floor and stringers for dry rot on a boat that old. If there are any soft spots in the floor walk away. Check the stringers where the engine mounts bolt to...use a small pick if you have one...if it sinks in walk away. I say this from experience... Also, do a compression test on the engine. If it's sat idle for 5 years you might have rust in the cylinders that could tweak the rings. I had to drop $3k on the first boat we bought that was a "great deal" due to dry rot and a bad valve that we could have caught if I'd been more careful.

sangeria 08-16-2004 12:52 PM

Stephen -

We bought the Sanger from a gal down in Dana Point...found it on Boattraderonline about 3 weeks ago. It hit on a Tuesday and by Wednesday afternoon we had agreement on price, etc. I've looked every day for a year for that boat and just hit the timing right. Here's a link to the boat: http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/9/4/74562494.htm

Good luck...

I have a twin to MAC's boat and it throws out a very steep knee high wake with wieght. I had around 2000 pounds or a little more in it yesterday and it took a little bit to plane but once it did.........OH WOW......but there is very little transition to the wake....flat to knee high in a hurry. But have not had any serious issues with the boat.

yearling 08-16-2004 7:25 PM

I have 2 dry rot spots in the boat we bought. What kind of problems can you have? If the stringers are rotted then what can happen to the boat?

mac_attack 08-16-2004 8:58 PM

2 p (yearling)
Nothing really as long as you fix it and not let it get to bad.

yearling 08-17-2004 12:47 PM

Thanks mac. That makes me feel better. I cant believe your boat hasnt sold yet. Its an awsome deal! It was just too far away for us.

afxsguy 08-18-2004 12:01 PM

cool stuff... i will be checking out this '81 nautique friday. hopefully it's a good one :D

srh00z 08-18-2004 12:51 PM

I second the sunsetter, I have a 1986 and I love the shape and size of the wake anywhere from unweighted with about 4 people to around 1000 lbs. and six people the wake is always nicely shaped, it just gets bigger.
