Looking for a good wakeboarding boat thats 20 feet and under 15000

Hi guys I've been looking up boats for about a month now and I'm looking for a inboard wakeboard boat preferably V drive but doesn't have to be for under 15,000 I've checked out Mastercraft prostar 205s, Sport Nautiques, and Nautique 2001s. My lake has a limit of 20 feet so I need it to be 20 feet. Please help! The boat doesn't have to be newer too it could be a 80s or 90s.

07-02-2013 1:22 PM

What are some options I could pick from? Also I would love to see some of the wakes and boats that you guys have.

behindtheboat 07-02-2013 1:23 PM

20 maristar VRS is likely your only v drive option, hard to find that under $15k, prob more like 17-18 range

behindtheboat 07-02-2013 1:30 PM

Wanting way too much for upgrades, imo.

polarbill 07-02-2013 1:54 PM

The Nautique Excel is the only boat I can think of if you have a hard limit at 20' and even then I am not sure how long those are although I would expect between 19 and 20.

07-02-2013 1:56 PM

A-dub do you know what the wakes like behind a Maristar?

07-02-2013 1:58 PM

Brett I've looked into the Excel and I heard its basically a barefoot nautique, also I heard it doesn't throw a good wake. Do you know anything else about the excel that maybe I'm overlooking?

trayson 07-02-2013 2:02 PM

Well, my Supra Sunsport is listed on my boat registration as 20, but it's listed on Nadaguides as 21. I clicked through nadaguides and there's some years listed as 20 and others as 21, yet I don't think they really changed the length.

That said, are they really going to be able to tell the difference between a 20 and 21 foot? How are they going to verify? I think my boat is 20' 5" or something. what would they do in that situation? Are they going to measure it, or are they going to look at your registration or your insurance or what???

My insurance company just took my word for what length my boat is and that's what is on the policy.

07-02-2013 2:56 PM

Trayson if on the title it shows over 20 feet then they send a guy over to our house to measure our boat from the tip to the water line in the back so its pretty hard to get around it.

trayson 07-02-2013 2:59 PM

Damn! Well, I would say you might still be able to look at some of the Supra's, but ask the seller what length is listed on the title.

Bummer though, because 21 foot opens up a TON of boats into the search.

trayson 07-02-2013 2:59 PM

MB Sport makes some 20' boats too. I remember wakeboarding behind a Boss 200.

polarbill 07-02-2013 3:00 PM

I don't know anything about the Excel wake but it is most likely your only option for 20' or under and anywhere close to 15 grand as far as a vrdrive goes.

The Mastercraft prostar 205 is a over 20' but I am not sure what it says on the title. That would be a great boat. Try and find a 96 or later. The sport nautique is closer to 21' isn't it?

you could do a nautique 2001 but that is closed bow. Great wake boat though.

polarbill 07-02-2013 3:06 PM

Nada lists the Hydrodyne Grand Sport as a 20' boat. That would be something I would keep an eye out for.

The bow is really low to the water but the calabria sport comp xts/cal-Air direct drive is a 19' boat although I think it was marketed as longer.

07-02-2013 3:08 PM

Trayson ahh I know man I've realized that almost bought a Malibu wake setter vlx but it was too big.. and Brett a couple people have a 205 on my lake so I wonder.. also nada has the sport nautique at 20 and do they make any open bow 2001s?

07-02-2013 3:09 PM

Oh yeah and how was that boss?

polarbill 07-02-2013 3:11 PM

I looked up 1995 sport nautique and it says it is a 21. I could be wrong but I think it is actually over 21'.

07-02-2013 3:25 PM

I was looking at 1992 sport nautiques

xstarrider 07-02-2013 3:26 PM

A Mastercraft 205 is 20ft 8 inches. I am almost positive sport nauti's are 21.

A mastercraft prostar 195 open bow/x5 would be ideal. It has nice freeboard, decent wakes, and room. It really feels much bigger than it is.

Other than that the late 80's Nautique 2001 is killer. I have never heard anyone say a Nautique excel wake is terrible until that post above. It's just not the case

07-02-2013 4:54 PM

Swatguy so a mastercraft prostar 195 throws a good wake?

polarbill 07-02-2013 5:07 PM

Pretty sure the prostar 195/X5 are the same hull as the 1995-1997 prostar 190. The 205 and then the 205V hull are basically a bigger version of that hull so in theory that era prostar 190/195/X5 will all throw a good wake with extra ballast.

07-02-2013 5:56 PM

which boat do you guys think would be the best older direct drive boat for boarding behind? without adding extra weight.

polarbill 07-02-2013 6:01 PM

Can you not add any weight either?

I would buy a nautique 2001 and figure out how to hide 500-1000 pounds in it. You could probably hide some lead in the bow and some in/around the rear seat.

07-02-2013 6:39 PM

no I can add weight to it haha but I was just wondering what would throw a good wake without weight because in theory it would throw a bigger wake with weight.

Camsquared211 07-02-2013 7:15 PM

Have you considered going to 21 feet? you open up a ton of options!

wakebordr11 07-02-2013 9:02 PM

No old 20' boat throws a big wake without weight...

xstarrider 07-02-2013 9:02 PM

Believe it or not the 195 throws a pretty decent wake . As mentioned it is similar to 190 hull however that's where the similarities end. The top deck is very similar to 205. The gunwales are very high unlike in the 190, it has a full walkthru option and it really feels huge for a 19 ft'r. You can easily add close to 2k in ballast and not worry a bit about burying the nose. If you compare the ski wake on the 195 to the 190 the 195 has a bigger bump but you are looking for wakeboarding so kind of null. You'll be hard pressed to find an open bow sub 21ft in your price range. So that makes this boat jump to the top of my list.

One other bonus is ou can also find it in an X version with x graphics Allah X5. In 02 the x5 only came in a closed bow. In 00-01 it was available open bow.

The problem with the X5 is that you aren't going to find one that isn't trashed for less than $20,000 usually. There's one for sale in Louisiana that is absolutely mint with a couple upgrades, but is $26,000. Saw another one listed that was in decent shape and was basically still stock, and it was still almost $21,000. The X5 is probably the best option for what he's looking for, he's just gonna have to find one that's been trashed and do a bunch of work to stay anywhere close to a $15,000 budget.

The older 205s were listed as 20' boat, where as the 205V was listed as a 21' boat. You probably aren't going to find a Vdrive that meets your lakes requirements in your price range. Not sure where you're located, but found this one in NY and it looks like it would be a pretty perfect setup for what you're looking for and leave some cash in your pocket too. Says it's got all new interior, and you could wrap it for a new look, add some bags, and do some stereo upgrades and still be under your $15K budget (not including transport) with this one:

I did also see this one in Louisiana, but it's listed as a 21' length. You may be able to contact the seller and see what the title shows, may get lucky and have it mislabeled as a 20'. In which case this one isn't a bad deal, and you may be able to talk him down closer to your budget.

I didn't realize they were still fetching that much these days. That surely is an eye opener for me. For that price u can easily find a 99-2000 bare bones 205v most likely w a tower. I figured 17k on high end for x5

jhartt3 07-03-2013 5:56 AM

Grandsports are 20' 6" ... pretty sure that the 205 and 205v are both over 20' long. as well as any version of the SAN, SuperSport etc. i live on a lake with a 21' boat limit the lake right next door is a 20' limit... most people who board live on my lake the other lake has more skiers.

TC_Mastercraf_X5 07-03-2013 6:10 AM

I have a 2000 X5 and for a lower budget boat it really does a good job. You have to remember that with its design it’s going to throw a steeper wake than your newer boats. I currently load it down with 1200 lbs of fat sacs, but without the sacs it throws a wake similar to a I/O. The other down fall of this boat is that there is ZERO storage area in it. Its rated for 8 people… no way it would fit 8 Midwestern people ha-ha. Here’s a Prostar that’s literally an X5 without the stickers:

The below link is for the newer version of the X5.

okay guys my budget just increased to about 22k due to a college scholarship! So any ideas on what I should get? I'm thinking a Tige 20v?

FastR3DN3K 07-04-2013 1:46 PM

I'm so confused now...which thread are you going to post in. There's a ton of ads posted in your other thread to give you a good start. I'd suggest going over to boat trader and punching in what you're looking for and that will give you a good starting point, and remember to search a little over your budget too. You can always negotiate a nicer boat down to around your budget.

FastR3DN3K 07-04-2013 2:17 PM

I'm not going to get into the whole "which hull is better" debate because honestly I don't have enough experience with more than just a select few boats, and most of them are pretty adequate for my skill level. Just a few good options to get you started and on the water:

This one needs some interior work, but with a hard negotiation could be a screaming good deal:

I'd keep my eyes peeled for a Calabria cal-air. It's a direct drive but has 700lbs of below floor ballast with the pure vert system. This one is out of your range but just wanted to give you an example.

http://eugene.craigslist.org/boa/3876605758.html

It's under 20ft. Calabria uses the swim deck in the overal length so it's decieving. I believe it's 19.5

bstroop 07-04-2013 2:48 PM

http://www.boattrader.com/listing/20...Cal-Air-358652

Here's another

If you could up your budget a little and spring for something like the 2006 Tige 20i up above its a pretty sweet deal. I had that exact same boat. It's 20ft has a 96 inch beam and a deep freeboard. The storage in that boat is incredible for a direct drive. It can handle a lot of weight because of the freeboard and a big sack will fit in the rear storage. I only needed to get a larger boat because I have a lot of family..... Other wise I would have kept it because it was an awesome boat. It's one of the "biggest" little boats I've ever been in.

07-04-2013 4:44 PM

Haha sorry about the back and forth I'll be posting in this thread, it got all messed up and said I couldn't reply anymore.

xstarrider 07-04-2013 9:09 PM

As mentioned. Keep all your questions in one thread. You are essentially asking same question hundred different ways.

Ok let get some things clarified. You're lake has a 20ft rule. Now does this in turn mean 20ft 8 inches is not going to work? Or does it have to be 20.0 feet exact or less. THIS IS A HUGE QUESTION THAT NEEDS TO BE ANSWERED. .

If you are approaching the 20k mark and need a smaller v drive a Centurion Cyclone(mentioned by bill as well) is def the ticket as is a Mastercraft 205v. Both boats ate spec'd over 20 ft. Cyclone 20ft 5inch. 205v 20ft 8inches. An air Nautique or any Sport Nautique is 21ft. DO NOT USE NADA AS YOUR SPEC GUIDE. I owned 2 Cyclones. The wake is a beast. It super poppy and steep. It was the best best factory wake on the market in the early 2000's. With just stock ballast it was more than some boats with 1500lbs back then. It's factory wake was similar to my 205v with 1800lbs. The hull on the Cyclone has a very deep v so it takes less to sink it down. It throws a big surf wake too. Especially for a 20ft boat. The wake shape is very very similar to the 205v. The dofference is that the Cyclone will not take 3000 lbs of ballast and have a great wake that just keeps getting bigger. It maxes out around the 1500lbs of total ballast and the really start to curl. The 205v tho just keeps getting bigger and bigger with more and more weight. You am easy throw over 4k in there am still get a wall of a clean wake.

If you have to be 20.0 or under IMO the prostar195 blows the response out of the water. I used to ride behind one with a wedge regularly. I am also tho not a fan of the early bu's wakes. While very smooth and clean I just like the little more kick you get with the MC wakes of that era

bstroop 07-05-2013 8:22 AM

http://redding.craigslist.org/boa/3907741401.html

13k and under 20ft. Just put a tower on it

07-05-2013 6:26 PM

The boat has to be exactly 20 feet not 20 feet 1 inch. But they measure it from tip to the water line in the back not including swim platform

07-05-2013 7:07 PM

but I've seen 205s and sport nautiques all over the lake so I get confused
