Got my iPad......
....CASE! Yes, I have an iPad case. Be jealous.
I ducked into the SF Apple store real quick and talked them into letting me load up the Citrix Receiver app. This thing is going to be fantastic for the kind of work I do. Can't wait to get mine in a couple weeks. http://lazara.org/misc/ipad.jpg http://lazara.org/misc/ipad2.jpg http://lazara.org/misc/ipad3.jpg |
|
^^^^ haha yessss. Buy an Ipad for $700....or just hold my Iphone really close to my face. same thing.
|
Everyone here knows I love to bash Apple when warranted, but people really underestimate this device. Saying it is nothing but a big iphone/touch is extremely shortsighted. 1024x768 resolution makes a world of difference. People need to look past the media consumer niche and they will see that this thing is going to be big.
|
A world of difference how? Don't you need higher resolution if you're going to make it bigger?
|
I don't think you understand resolution.
|
I understand this:
IPAD: 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi) IPOD TOUCH: 480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch |
I get that it will work "exactly" with some monitors.... but is that it? That it could be a perfect match when using Citrix
|
Yes - so as you can see the iPad has more than 4x the screen real estate making for a workable desktop. The iPhone/Touch does not - you could run the same app but you'd have to pan/scale repeatedly making it pretty much unusable as an actual desktop.
Basically iPad+Citrix=full fledged computer. There will be countless other remote desktop style apps aimed at soho/home users for controlling individual computers - LogMeIn, RDP, VNC, etc... |
No it has nothing to do with "matching" anything - it is simply a question of having a device with a high enough resolution to make actual work possible. The Iphone/Touch do not... With Citrix specifically there is nothing to "match" because there is no physical hardware you are connecting to - rather you are connecting to a virtual computing environment.
|
Sorry Nick, I'm doing a crummy job of explaining - let me see about a visual
|
Here is a mockup of what you'd see via Remote Desktop on the iPad vs. the iPhone/Touch. Since the resolution provides more than 4x the real estate on the iPad (again, not talking size of the screen but the actual pixels) you get a full fledged desktop -- and you can see what a small chunk of the space you get on the phone/touch -- requiring a lot of panning around to even see what is happening on the screen. Even if you were to be able to scale out on the phone/touch so that you could see the entire desktop, the result would be that everything would be far too small to read/interact with... Which is of course why a larger screen allows for higher resolution/density...

Pretty Damn slick Wes....
|
I was pleasantly surprised by how well the citrix receiver app worked... I suppose they are probably very excited about supporting the ipad since citrix is so big in the medical field among others - this is going to be great for medical, construction, and a whole slew of other fields I think.
|
Touche, Wes....touche.
Not so much shortsighted as just poking fun at it. you've got a point though, with its usefulness in medical/construction and other fields like that. I, myself, didn't actually know it had a remote desktop feature, but then again i never really looked into it much. |
Well, like any device, it's only as good as the software written for it... But Citrix and LogMeIn are already all over it, and I'm sure plenty of others will follow. Some dude already wrote a pretty cool looking app to specifically tie into Macs and allow you to pull up individual apps running on your Mac rather than the entire desktop. There will be some pretty neat stuff still to come I think.
But yeah - are even 25% of the people who stood around in lines on Saturday really going to be taking advantage of what the thing can do? Probably not... |
I saw on the news today that they sold 300K of them in the first few days of sales. Impressive.
|
It just really blows me away that the lack of Flash support and multi-tasking that were such a huge complaint with the iPhone/iPod didn't get remedied with this device. The Flash issue is most troubling considering the comments made by Jobs that make is sound like Adobe abused him as a child and he's got a personal vendetta against them. He seems to be cutting off his nose to spite his face.
Apple has so many worshippers that they could probably slap their logo on a piece of dog crap and sell 100,000 units, but can you imagine how many of these they'd sell if they took care of those issues and maybe added a camera? I know I'd buy one!! |
The whole adobe vendetta is BS...
The real reason for no flash... Lost revenue from the app store. if the iPhone/touch/pad supported flash, 90% of apps would be able to run online using flash, thus not need to go through Apple's BS to get in there and Apple does not get their cut. They are gonna bleed it dry and will support flash at the latest possible time that the market will allow... |
Wes, you when get the iPad it will be interesting to get some real world feedback. One of the things we have noticed at the evil empire is the user agent string. Silly thing tells websites it's an iPhone.... so sometimes it will get redirected to the mobile device site by default. Just rolled out a change to MSN.com this evening to fix that for Apple.
Example: http://www.jeffdepascale.com/index.p...nts-a-problem/ (note it originally starts with some incorrect info, but then he updates his blog entry) |
Dave - as Manzo points out a lot of the Flash thing is revenue. But it's also a bit of a grudge against Adobe which has never put much effort into optimizing flash for the Mac platform - Flash can bring a powerful Mac Pro to its knees sometimes - it's ridiculous how poorly it runs on the Mac. I don't like Apple's business practices but putting on my sysadmin hat I absolutely DESPISE Adobe and their janky, brokeass software.
As for multitasking, it is not a hardware issue, it's simply a matter of software. Multitasking is coming in a couple months with OS 4.0 to the iPhone and the iPad will get it then as well. They just weren't ready with 4.0 in time for the iPad launch. Sean - I imagine there will be a lot of tweaking to do on Safari and plenty of other apps as people start to realize the differences and adapt. |

This website needs a better laughing face emoticon...one that can't be confused with a smiley face which might make me look like I'm trying to prove anyone wrong by posting some random article from a source that I haven't ever come across in my life. We also need to adopt some form of sarcasm button, but that's for a different thread. |
I LIKE IT.
If they can bring the price down, those things are going to be in everyone's living room! If only it could recharge off the lights in the room duing the day when it sits idle. I could see paying a subscription to read a ton of magazines every month. And, the magazines could be so much more rich with photos, videos and links. I could also see paying for a library of coffee table books. Plus book reading and web surfing. Plus, it should also be a fancy remote control for my AV system or my entire house. Can you use a wireless keyboard with it? It would be cool if someone made a protective cover that is also a wireless keyboard that can hold the thing up like a laptop screen. |
Quote:
I also despise Adobe... |
So just WTF does this thing do? Is it a computer , a web surfer , a toy ? Seems like a big screen touch.
|
It is an Ipod touch.... with more.
The best thing I can see is the Citrix app, where you can control a home/work computer remotely trhough the Ipad. Having no usb input is so stupid too IMO |
can it still not run most web video formats? that's pretty big and popular these days, as you know from this site
|
Don't spill your starbucks all over your black turtleneck while tweeting on it ;^)
|
haha
|
Man I have heard it all on these forums, Adobe, Microsoft, Apple they all suck! What do you guys prefer Gimp and Ubuntu?! LOL.
Regarding the Flash "issue". It was never an issue when the 1st Generation iPhone came out and it still wont be an issue. People are going to buy them regardless. Also as a developer and designer who has developed Flex apps and Flash sites I have never had issues designing and developing Flash applications on my Mac. Im always a bit surprised to here that. |
Seems like a giant waste of money.
|
Did anyone see this? What a bunch of idiots.

Dane, there are already apps to do everything you mentioned, and yes there are bluetooth keyboards for it as well.
Andy, it "does" anything that someone writes software for it to "do." Nick, no USB input is typical for Apple - bend people over and charge $30-50 for every little accessory. MattG - developing flash is a whole other story - flash development is actually great; I have a good friend who works on that particular side of things at Adobe and he knows his stuff. It is the flash PLAYER that is a POS... Strangely enough different teams ;-) Andy, if you don't have a use for it, yes it would be a waste of money. Kind of like buying a car you don't have a use for, or a laptop you don't have a use for, or... |

I like thin/mobile computing compared to clunky desktops and notebooks.
These days its all about convenient computing. These "tablets" are going to be a hit. Its the ideal carry along computer for doing real work or real web surfing. I often go out to lunch with a magazine to read (Iike car&driver, road&track, etc). With this thing, I can read anything I want or surf the web or do a little work. |
I was really on the fence about the ipad and what it would be good for etc.. Then my brother pointed out we currently have 2 17" laptops sitting on the coffee table that take up the majority of the space. All it took was him pointing that out to make me want either an ipad or the HP slate.

OS4 improvements coming this summer (Fall for ipad): http://lifehacker.com/5512635/iphone...e-new-features
multitasking finally (for 3gs and newer), and multiple exchange accounts (i've been waiting for this one) |

4.0 will bring a lot of long-needed improvements and will be the nail in RIM's coffin. Bye bye Crackberries (and good riddance). Just wish the freakin mail app would get basic email search and exchange flagging capability. |
OK I'm an idiot - the iphone does have and has had search. Duh. No flagging yet, but I did load up OS 4.0 yesterday and they have added the forward/reply flag integration with Exchange, which is another thing I've been waiting for. Being able to have more than one Exchange account on the phone is awesome. Haven't messed around with multitasking too much yet. Everything is still snappy and smooth running on the 3GS so far.

I'm now just about done with my first week using the iPad and my expectations (which were high to start with) have been exceeded by far. I was no longer carrying a laptop to do business as of Tuesday afternoon. I'm a mifi user, so mobile connectivity with the wifi only isn't an issue for me.
I fully expected my iPad to be a toy that lived at home. Convenient couch-browsing and emailing...stuff like that. Turns out, it's going to be a much better productivity tool than Apple and the early reviews ever indicated. There are even things I can do on the iPad that I can't do on my "real computers" because value is captured by lower cost apps that I otherwise wouldn't buy (Bento, for example). Geolocation via skyhook also works better than expected. I have experience with this using the Touch, but it appears that the iPad uses an even more accurate and updated version of WPS. Practically seamless location without real GPS. I'm using iTeleport for remote desktop like Wes mentions above. Very easy setup and it works great. Be sure you go into options and turn on Touchscreen Mode. I haven't seen much of the blue lego, but that's a function of my browsing habits. No shortage of video content even without Flash...haven't really missed it. |
Good to hear Nate. Wish they'd get the 3g's out the door early.

A picture worth a thousand words...Wakeworld, remote desktop, and Flash content on an iPad... |
good stuff Nate...
I just found out that you can pair your iphone with your ipad and use the iphone screen as a wireless touchpad/mouse device in the citrix receiver app. Pair that with a bluetooth keyboard and it would be a very usable setup when you really have to get a lot of work done. |

I like the idea of a hybrid tablet/notebook. Effectively two tablets joined by a hinge like a book. Both sides can be a tablet. One side can be a touch keyboard. Yet, it folds up thin and protected.
Something like this (but with better ID): http://blog.laptopmag.com/msis-dual-...han-an-ereader |

I like it but wish it was not attached to MS.
|
There will be lots of partner devices I am sure, Microsoft may not even ultimately sell their own hardware.
|
that MS Courier doesn't look as cat friendly as the iPad.

I know several of you guys are in IT, but has anyone actually used this thing with either RDP or Citrix regularly? I am seriously considering replacing my netbook with one for out around the office work and using some sort of RDP app to connect back to my desktop workstation.
|
I am waiting for my 3g to arrive. When it does I will be doing some heavy citrix and RDP testing.

That last one is pretty awesome.
My little brother's high school is looking to get them for their students instead of text books. ~Obligatory "dog eats your homework" joke goes here~ |
The magical mystical ipad just arrived.
|
I am actually on an iPad right now and tnesite is way better! There is no flash no but for just reading it works pretty well. If you click on forum instead of the list kind of flashing up it stays there so you can choose which board you want ! You should get one because they are cool plain and simple
|
Do they allow you to proofread your posts?
|
Jailbroke my ipad last night - never tried it with any of my iphones. Super easy and pretty cool - now have true multitasking up and running.
|
ipad for a week now. It is fast, easy to use and the battery life is awesome. Application selection is weak (time will fix this problem) and the applications out now seem buggy. If people are going to use this as a book reading device I think they are insane. This thing is HEAVY and tends to overheat in direct sunlight (poolside reading). My kindle kicks its arse for reading. This is not a laptop or desktop replacement, typing an email on this thing is tedious and lame. Surfing the web, movies/videos and pictures its is fantastic. Most people that come over can't stop playing with it. The lack of flash support (beating a dead horse) is lame.
|
Overheat?

I have heard it's best to stick with itunes 9.0.2 and not upgrade to 9.1.1 but according to this writeup 9.1.1 works fine.
|
|
Interesting, the story about that problem doesn't seem to have much in the way of legs. We'll see with summer coming.
Have you personally had this problem with yours? |
I can't imagine using mine in the sun - the glare would be a PITA
|
I haven't had the problem, but I haven't spent time with it outside and I don't have any plans for it other than surfing the web etc while on the couch watching tv. My brother in law left his in the sun for 30 minutes and it went into protect mode. 10 minutes in the shade and it was fine. Like Wes said the glare would be tough in direct sunlight.
|
After having my Ipad for several weeks now, I like it. The main issue I am having is my four year old wants to use it most of the time when I am home...she loves this thing. I have the same complaints most have read with screen glare, finger prints and no multitasking. The logmein Ignition app has been working out well for my day to day work away from my desk and I have not been all that effected by no flash.
What are your "must have" apps? Complaints? Compliments? Tricks? |
Work bought me one 2 weeks ago. I love it. And the last thing I will be doing in the Sun is reading.
|
We picked up a 64g w/3g for my wife Saturday. it's pretty darn cool i have to admit. and i'm not an apple fan. having said that...
Thanks for the LogMeIn app tip Wes. My wife is straight up giddy about being able to access her work pc from the road/home/etc. And she's never even really seen remote desktop stuff before so she was having trouble getting her head around being able to control her entier desktop from the ipad. although she's pissed that she had just spent $10 on documents to go or whatever it's called so that she could sync spreadsheets and word docs to the thing and work on them remotely. |
