OK finally decided to get a camera.

I want something simple but good for no more then $800.I don't want to have to adjust all these settings and have to read the instruction book to use.Possibly get a lens in the future for wakeboarding shots and such.
I was thinking of maybe a cannon rebel xp.....any suggestions?

deuce 01-31-2007 4:18 PM

Big Ed, may get some quicker responses in the A/V/P forum.

You can get close with a Canon Xt with the 17-85($1,000) or under with the Xt and 18-55($600). Xti with the 18-55 is $775.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&Q=&b=8&mnp=0.0&mxp=0 .0&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr=&shs=& ci=6222&ac=&Submit.x=7&Submit.y=10

You can also get the Nikon D40 or D50 in there.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&Q=&b=2&mnp=0.0&mxp=0 .0&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr=&shs=& ci=6222&ac=&Submit.x=13&Submit.y=7

Could go used and get a 20D or maybe even a 30D.....???

Only listed SLR's as you were thinking lens changes.... I don't know much about all of this, just sort of got the camera bug and purchased the 30D/17-85/70-200 2.8 and am feeling things out. Good luck staying away from instruction books and "all these settings."

Walt 01-31-2007 4:35 PM

I'll second Costco

deuce 01-31-2007 5:12 PM

That is dependent on if you plan on using the Costco return policy.

I don't know what sales tax is in CA, but assume you will pay $50 or more for tax to purchase from Costco. Plus, the extra $15(I took out $10 for shipping to 91388) that Costco has it listed at. That $65 buys you a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II card.....or bag....or....

Anyway....my $.02

Walt 01-31-2007 5:37 PM

E.J,
No shipping if he walks in and buys it.

Ed,
That's a nice camera and I can show you how to work it.

deuce 01-31-2007 6:06 PM

Walt,

Shipping is included in the Costco price. It is the tax, I took shipping out of the BHPhoto price. I just think looking at it "today" the price is higher at Costco.....then there is also tax, which is 6.6% here in Utah. So if you don't plan on having issues(you can return to Canon anyway), then there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to purchase from Costco over BH.

All of that was priced off the Xti with the 18-55. Don't know if you can even get the Xt at Costco any longer.

No worries either way, just giving an option. It is not my money.

P.S. Ed...if Walt is that close, you can not only have him show you how to use the camera....you can borrow his lenses.....to figure out what you want........

Walt 01-31-2007 6:12 PM

Big Ed doesn't care how much it costs !

As far as lending out my lens goes

I'd be fine with that Ed.

thats a great camera, but you will need to read the manual a few times to understand how take quality wake photos

definately go with a nikon d40. easy and simple to use with awesome quality, and nikkor lenses. it comes with all different kinds of modes like sports, portrait, landscape, macro, and etc. to make taking photos easy than ever.

my friend just got one and has very little knowledge about aperture and shutter speed, and all the other settings but is still taking great shots, while learning more about the different settings

richd 02-01-2007 7:56 AM

This is not going to be much help but AFAIC it's gotten to this at this level:

Canon vs Nikon = Ford vs Chevy

I'll let everyone else argue about which is the Ford etc.

big_ed_x2 02-01-2007 8:01 AM

If anybody could tell me which one Chevy is,we'll be all good.

getssum 02-01-2007 10:01 AM

Ed,

(C)anon = (C)hevy :-)

simply because they both have 5 letters and start with C!!

I recommend going with the xti or a used 20D (or 30D if you get lucky) and leaning heavily on Walt!

projectely4 02-01-2007 11:40 AM

canon and nikon are both great cameras, but dont be blinded by the amount of pixels the camera has. pixels mean very little and you should get the camera that you like when its in your hands and whatever one is easier to use.
check out kenrockwell.com some great articles and comparisons of cameras

eubanks01 02-01-2007 1:20 PM

I agree with Chris that this is a lot of money to spend to think about just using it as a Point and Shoot camera. You never know though because you might get into it more than you think, but you will definitley need to know more than where the shutter button is to get high quality pics.

clubmyke 02-02-2007 8:06 AM

ed,

whats up bro ? hope all is well..

when buying a camera setup you need to consider the lens (it is a system buy)..this may sound strange but the lenses can cost more than the camera body ( a collection of L lens will)

i think canon has a better lense selection than nikon's (canon "L" lens are legendary..they make everything look so darn good and really hold their value well...you can buy one, use it for a couple of years and lose $50-$100 if you keep it in good shape - minimal depreciation-pretty amazing)...

you kinda look at the lens first then buy the body(imo)..if you buy decent stuff, you can resell it easy with minimal loss while enjoying it..

a really nice lense for wakeboarding is the canon 70-200 f4 zoom that goes for $550...it is a awesome lense (L quality) and it is better than the nikon 18-200 in picture quality and construction...(i tried 18-200 on a d70 with last week)

i dig on the nikon bodys (always have), the new ones are pretty nice and upper end ones are really nice... but i went with canon because of the lens offering (17-40 for wide angle, 70-200 zoom, and 50 mm for portraits - this is a first class combo for a cheep price)

bought a xti because it was reasonably priced with the new 10 pixel and the sensor cleaning....after shotting with it for a couple of weeks, i hated it ...action shots & color/comtrast sucked (shoting with the 17-40 & the 70-200 - awesome canon L lens).and it was too hard to hold (small grip)and slow.

long story short - got a 30d for $150 more due to the canon double rebates (no brainer) and this a smoking body...wow !!!!

canon has rebates all the time, so you might want to wait for the next one if you want to buy new (the 30d will be discontinued very soon)... i dont know what your budget is but a canon 20d/30d with a 70-200 is a great system.

clubmyke 02-02-2007 9:51 AM

ed,

"is it a pricey setup" ? hummm..yes if you are sticking to a overall budget. the lens were a sticker shock when i got into this (i think most people would agree, the lens is just as important as the body)

the 30d with a 70-200 L glass is "the cheapest kick azz highest PRO quality combo" going( there is a a slight increase in cost for HUGE jump in performance).. it is the fastest, high quality, durable, cheapest combo going...

the 70-200 f4 is a awesome lens... most high quality pics you see in wakeboarding is taken with that lens (or a variation of it, like with IS or f 2.8)

it will capture wakeboarding pics in full color and sharp as a tack when the lens is all the way out (this is way important...non L lenses get "soft" when all the way out (though they are rated at 105, they are really only usable only to about 70).. the 70-200 L lense is good to the full 200..

if you want to save some buck. you can get a 18-55 lens for $100 or a 28-105 f3.5 for $225

i got my 30d for $850($200 rebate) and a 70-200 $500 ($70 rebate) and a 17-40 for $529..it seems a bit pricey but the quality and performance is ureal..

btw, you are going to want to pick up a couple high quality 2 gig flash cards (about $50 each) and a extra battery..the accessories get pricy..

if you can hang on, there will be a further price drop in the 20/30d's when the new 40d is released very soon..

clubmyke 02-02-2007 10:08 AM

ed,

btw, to get the same canon L quality lens in nikon or sony lens they get really pricey ($1500 - $2200)..

that is what makes the canon so attractive (high quality glass for cheap)..

big_ed_x2 02-02-2007 12:11 PM

mikeski 02-02-2007 11:14 PM

Hey Big Ed, what's up?

I would suggest a Nikon D50 18-55 and an older 70-210AF lens (the D40 doesn't focus this lens?). This setup is within your budget.

If you prefer the feel of the Canon, you can probably get a Rebel and a lens for a bit more.

caskimmer 02-04-2007 3:46 PM

"30d with a 70-200 L glass is "the cheapest kick azz highest PRO quality combo" going"

Sorry but that XTi you keep discounting is cheaper still and I currently know more pros (who actually make money taking pictures) with an XTi in their bags then 20D/30D's. Look at the end of the Super Bowl and I promise you'll see more then 1 AP photographer using an XTi as a 2nd body.

*and no I'm not trying to justify anything. I own a 1DII and a 20D but if I were buying a 2nd body today it would be a $700 XTi.

caskimmer 02-04-2007 3:58 PM

...actually if I were buying a prosumer camera and didn't already own Canon or Nikon glass I'd jump all over the Pentax K10D. Best camera value under $2000.

richd 02-04-2007 8:39 PM

I can attest that the AF on the XTi is definitely up to speed and with a 10mp Canon CMOS and digic 2 it's hard to go wrong from an IQ standpoint.

scott_a 02-04-2007 9:40 PM

not to hijack, but all I remember seeing during the post game coach's handshake was a bunch of 1DII's being held up as high as they could...and then this one little point and shoot fighting amongst all the 1DII's hahahahaha classic!

deuce 02-05-2007 5:59 AM

Noticed that as well ScottA....

Someone tell me this, then the hijack can be over. What were all the colored tabs on the lenses? Looked like they had a few "postit's" hooked to like half the lenses? Who knows, maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me, but I was sober as a cat and had yet to take my dose of Nyquil....

swami 02-05-2007 10:53 AM

probably press pass stickers?

it was on the body of the lens and not the lens itself.

Yep, that was pretty cool.. all those EOS-1s's Probably about 50-60k worth of cameras! (added together)

clubmyke 02-05-2007 11:46 AM

ed,

I would suggest trying both (i didn't care for the xti ergonomics & image quality)...btw, if you go with the xti, I have a brand battery grip from b&h i) do for $105 shipped
