Bringing dogs on your boat.. Dog boots?

So we have 2 medium sized dogs who love the water and love going with us wherever that may be. I want to take them on our new boat but fear for their claws and the damage to the seats. Does anyone have something they do to help keeps seats safe with dogs on the boat and has anyone ever tried putting dog boots on their dog?

Dmac420sj 06-21-2013 8:42 AM

File there claws you will be fine. What kinda dogs?

dhill 06-21-2013 9:01 AM

kitten mittens....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fP4emqw7O4

seriously, i have the same concern. though everything has been fine the couple times we've had our dog on our boat.

CTXxRoss 06-21-2013 9:04 AM

They are mutts.. One has some lab and maybe a little pit, the other is a bulldog mix of some sort. They are like 40 pounds each, one was a tiny puppy someone dumped at my father-in-laws house 5 years ago and the other I got from a girl I knew who was going away to college and wasn't able to take her with. She was a puppy then, she's about 2+ now. Mutts are the smartest dogs imo. File their nails? Like trim them and take the edges down with a nail file?

05sante 06-21-2013 9:22 AM

Soft claws. I've never used them but they are highly recommended.

countryguy1717 06-21-2013 9:33 AM

I've got a German shep mix and a lab pit and I've brought em on. The boots seem to be a good idea but idk if they can swim in them. I always lay towels down on all my seats. Haven't had any issues with them scratching the gel coat or tearing anything. When I throttle up though they run up to my gfs lap.

Vinyl in most wake boats is so thick a dog would have a very difficult time doing any damage. Maybe if you have an old bayliner or something. I have never seen a dog damage the vinyl with their paws on newer boats.

brianl 06-21-2013 9:50 AM

Sometimes we have more dogs than people. I have never had any dog scratches on my vinyl or jelcoat. I have 80lb Weimar's and a 30lb Cocker Spaniel. You should be fine. My wife has purchased these "balloon booties" but we use those so they dont burn their feet on the docks or hot pavement. I have noticed if you leave them on, it makes it very difficult for them to swim.

I am fairly anal about the upkeep of my boat (my 2003 Malibu still looks brand new) and I would say go for it with very little worries.

Try the pedi-paws...

countryguy1717 06-21-2013 9:56 AM

Just be careful when wakeboarding. When I crash and go under initially my dogs wanted to jump in after me.

axxxiswake 06-21-2013 9:57 AM

Get their nails

a) trimmed
b) ground

grinding the nails by a professional dog groomer will round them off. I take my pooch on my axis a22, he absolutely loves it.

Make sure you keep an eye on him tho, they can get very nervous when their owner is in the water

I tried soft paws and they seemed to work great for a couple of days before they chewed them off.

Just clip and file. Don't be a GAYPER and put boots on your dog.

xstarrider 06-21-2013 12:23 PM

Towels all over the seat bases. Done deal.

Lol a gayper... Ok thanks for all the input y'all!! Think I'll just clip and file and call it good

countryguy1717 06-21-2013 5:38 PM

Highly recommend the towels on the seats I tuck them on the bottoms and backs even when I don't have the dogs. Just my 2 cents

cowwboy 06-21-2013 6:29 PM

I have a boxer and maltese and foster boxers.
I haven't had any issues and just use a dremel to sand their nails down.

That Rhode mix is a real good lookin pup.

We don't professionally groom our dogs just trim their nails down. i figured a few $12 extra long towels from Walmart is cheap insurance. But then again can you really put a price on letting our dogs enjoy what we love too.

imondi 06-21-2013 7:19 PM

We have a 6 month old golden retriever. We trim her nails like once every 2 months and we have had no issues with it! We have an 11 axis a22 so the vinyl is pretty thin!

@chrisdurty- serious dude GAYPER? My brother is gay and 6'2 and wakeboards like nobody's business. It's the 21st century. Why the derogatory hate?

xstarrider 06-21-2013 10:12 PM

Holy crap man. It is the 21st Century. Nobody cares your brother's gay. He never said he hated gays either.quit jumping to conclusions. You're the only one who's hung up over it and cares. Geezus people are so thin skinned these days. Man alive. No one's hatin on your bro for his lifestyle. Let's get back to the pups

She's our 3rd Rhodie. 1st mix. She's is absolutely amazing. Love the breed. So chill yet so athletic. Great family dogs.

Wakerluver 06-21-2013 10:40 PM

Doubt if he was using a word pertains skin color it would be so trivial. No matter what you say it was used as a derogatory term. Just my 2 cents. I have seen what words can do to a person. Getting off the soap box now. BTW. Great dogs.

wakebordr11 06-22-2013 11:01 AM

Gaper is actually the proper spelling. Nothing sexual/homosexual/hateful about it.

If you have to ask what one is, you might be one...

Dmac420sj 06-22-2013 2:03 PM

Lmao!!!! Freakin gaypers!!!

Ha completely missed that somehow. DOH! I have a sweet gaper 1 piece

Wakerluver 06-22-2013 9:07 PM

Be one what? LMAO? Tell that to my parents when my brother tried to hang himself when he was 16. You guys don't have a clue. Your son or daughter could be one of those.

wakebordr11 06-23-2013 8:57 AM

Oh man Mark. I said it has nothing to do with sexual orientation. I can't really explain what a gaper is but ya know one when you see one. The biggest gapers usually happen to be straight

diamonddad 06-23-2013 9:45 AM

Grinding their nails with a dremel. Just introduce it slowly with treats keeping them below fear threshold. If you never make it a fight, it will not be a fight. Here's a video I did of me working with my latest puppy who is 4 now.

Gaper definition

from the Urban dictionary.... we all good?

A skier or snowboarder who sucks and is usually spotted wearing clothing from 1983, but other clothing styles for them do exist. A dead giveaway of a gaper is when their pants are tucked into their boots and the famous "Gaper Gap" (a gap between the helmet/hat and the goggles). Gapers sometimes temporarily inhabit the entrance to a terrain park. They will sit on their ass for a good 5-10 minutes talking about what they are going to do of a that "jump" or "rail" while everyone behind them goes before them and they stare at them with their mouth gaped open. Once they finally decide to leave their home at the entrance of the terrain park, the gaper will eventually decide to either roll over the jump and mess up all the lips, or they will try and actually hit the jump. If this occurs, they generally end up coming up half way short of the landing on their ass and yardsale, while the person behind them runs them over and/or yells at them. Gapers may also make turns or snowplow down green runs and sometime try to act cool by crouching and sticking their ski poles in the air but are totally oblivioius to the fact that they look even more stupid than they previously were. Gapers often find themselves on the top of a black diamond run because they are dumbasses and can't read a map. When they approach the run, they may either turn around, stare at it, sit down on the top of it, or just simply walk down the side...

Wakerluver 06-23-2013 1:58 PM

I know what a gaper is but people ^ were saying GAYPER not gaper. Whatever you guys don't get it or care. Just by spelling it like Chrisdurty did was misspelled on purpose to be derogatory.

That's awesome- thanks for the tips and sharing the vid. I've only used clippers on our puppy, but this looks like a great way to go about it.

mikebu 06-23-2013 3:11 PM

Do you guys let your dog jump off the side of the boat from the padded engine cover? Our lab likes to but I'm afraid he will scratch the top gel coat as he plants his rear paws on the edge of the boat as he jumps...

Wakerluver 06-23-2013 4:28 PM

Case in point. ^. He is classless and a bigot. He wouldn't dare do this if it was about color of skin. I hope Chris never has a son or someone he cares about have to be subjected to his hateful rhetoric. By allowing this on this forum David Williams is condoning this hate.

wakintime 06-23-2013 4:39 PM

Wow. Going to have to restrict wakeworld from my son and daughter. I will not condone any discrimination and don't want by kids to see what hate is.

nautigirls 06-23-2013 4:47 PM

Agree with JR. Unbelievable, tacky, hateful. None of my kids on here anymore. As a matter of fact me either. Very sad and ignorant Chris. And it seems like all you macho men think its ok.

Dmac420sj 06-23-2013 4:56 PM

Wow!!! It's not meant as a hate thing y'all need to snap out of it. A GAYPER is a out of Towner that has no clue!!

Dmac420sj 06-23-2013 5:00 PM

You guys are right I shouldn't have posted those meanings though. My bad. I feel bad now. :( everybodies all upset.

My dog doesn't like to swim, but she does like the sun pad area a lot. The only way we let her in and out of the boat is off the swim platform typically.

xstarrider 06-23-2013 7:29 PM

My dog is fine jumping from the sun deck. the issue is when she wants to come back in The swim platform takes a beating. Me gelcoat is perfectly ok. The vest with the strap actually helps us out. She doesn't scuff the gel at all, but she has real long legs and can jump up top easily from the platform.

Completely agree with using the Dremel on the dog's nails. Easiest way to keep the nails rounded and smooth. One of mine accepted the Dremel right away, the other took months of conditioning. They both now equate the Dremel with tasty treats, making their weekly nail filing a pleasure.

Dmac420sj 06-24-2013 11:07 AM

Ridgebacks!!

razzman 06-24-2013 11:33 AM

Love Ridgebacks! I had three of them, my dad is on his seventh i think now. One of the best dogs there are imo.

Since this is boating...it's a Wally. Has been a Wally and always will be a Wally.

If there's one thing on the boat and in life in general I enjoy is the simplicity of a dog's life: I'm always reminded of when they're out with me: life is simple - sniff, eat, sleep in no particular order and if we go on the boat nothing else matters ...

I used to be all about labs but since having my ridgeback mix (what I think he is) because of his dark colored spine id like to get another

Davewfo 06-24-2013 8:21 PM

I have Labs and I use little kids socks on their feet they work great. In the past I have tried the little paw pads you can get at the pet stores for hunting. Typically they don't like them on their feet and want to take them off. Once I use the little kids socks they never had a problem with them and would keep them on all day.
