Bringing dogs on your boat.. Dog boots?
 

So we have 2 medium sized dogs who love the water and love going with us wherever that may be. I want to take them on our new boat but fear for their claws and the damage to the seats. Does anyone have something they do to help keeps seats safe with dogs on the boat and has anyone ever tried putting dog boots on their dog?

File there claws you will be fine. What kinda dogs?

seriously, i have the same concern. though everything has been fine the couple times we've had our dog on our boat.

They are mutts.. One has some lab and maybe a little pit, the other is a bulldog mix of some sort. They are like 40 pounds each, one was a tiny puppy someone dumped at my father-in-laws house 5 years ago and the other I got from a girl I knew who was going away to college and wasn't able to take her with. She was a puppy then, she's about 2+ now. Mutts are the smartest dogs imo. File their nails? Like trim them and take the edges down with a nail file?

Soft claws. I've never used them but they are highly recommended.

I've got a German shep mix and a lab pit and I've brought em on. The boots seem to be a good idea but idk if they can swim in them. I always lay towels down on all my seats. Haven't had any issues with them scratching the gel coat or tearing anything. When I throttle up though they run up to my gfs lap.

Vinyl in most wake boats is so thick a dog would have a very difficult time doing any damage. Maybe if you have an old bayliner or something. I have never seen a dog damage the vinyl with their paws on newer boats.

Sometimes we have more dogs than people. I have never had any dog scratches on my vinyl or jelcoat. I have 80lb Weimar's and a 30lb Cocker Spaniel. You should be fine. My wife has purchased these "balloon booties" but we use those so they dont burn their feet on the docks or hot pavement. I have noticed if you leave them on, it makes it very difficult for them to swim.

I am fairly anal about the upkeep of my boat (my 2003 Malibu still looks brand new) and I would say go for it with very little worries.

Just be careful when wakeboarding. When I crash and go under initially my dogs wanted to jump in after me.

Get their nails

a) trimmed
b) ground

grinding the nails by a professional dog groomer will round them off. I take my pooch on my axis a22, he absolutely loves it.

Make sure you keep an eye on him tho, they can get very nervous when their owner is in the water

Highly recommend the towels on the seats I tuck them on the bottoms and backs even when I don't have the dogs. Just my 2 cents

I have a boxer and maltese and foster boxers.
I haven't had any issues and just use a dremel to sand their nails down.

That Rhode mix is a real good lookin pup.

We don't professionally groom our dogs just trim their nails down. i figured a few $12 extra long towels from Walmart is cheap insurance. But then again can you really put a price on letting our dogs enjoy what we love too.

We have a 6 month old golden retriever. We trim her nails like once every 2 months and we have had no issues with it! We have an 11 axis a22 so the vinyl is pretty thin!

Grinding their nails with a dremel. Just introduce it slowly with treats keeping them below fear threshold. If you never make it a fight, it will not be a fight. Here's a video I did of me working with my latest puppy who is 4 now.

A dead giveaway of a gaper is when their pants are tucked into their boots and the famous "Gaper Gap" (a gap between the helmet/hat and the goggles). Do you guys let your dog jump off the side of the boat from the padded engine cover? Our lab likes to but I'm afraid he will scratch the top gel coat as he plants his rear paws on the edge of the boat as he jumps...

My dog doesn't like to swim, but she does like the sun pad area a lot. The only way we let her in and out of the boat is off the swim platform typically.

My dog is fine jumping from the sun deck. the issue is when she wants to come back in The swim platform takes a beating. Me gelcoat is perfectly ok. The vest with the strap actually helps us out. She doesn't scuff the gel at all, but she has real long legs and can jump up top easily from the platform.

I haven't had a problem with our Boston... Well no problem with his claws... hair falling out all over the place, that is a different story!

Both of mine are on the boat all the time, i never worry about marks or such and have never seen anything either.

Completely agree with using the Dremel on the dog's nails. Easiest way to keep the nails rounded and smooth. One of mine accepted the Dremel right away, the other took months of conditioning. They both now equate the Dremel with tasty treats, making their weekly nail filing a pleasure.

If there's one thing on the boat and in life in general I enjoy is the simplicity of a dog's life: I'm always reminded of when they're out with me: life is simple - sniff, eat, sleep in no particular order and if we go on the boat nothing else matters ...

Do you get them from a breeder? I don't see any Rhodes out here in nor cal, they're rare. all my dogs are mutts from.cl or the pound.

I used to be all about labs but since having my ridgeback mix (what I think he is) because of his dark colored spine id like to get another

I have Labs and I use little kids socks on their feet they work great. In the past I have tried the little paw pads you can get at the pet stores for hunting. Typically they don't like them on their feet and want to take them off. Once I use the little kids socks they never had a problem with them and would keep them on all day.

I feel ya on the hair...my Husky is a shedding machine...
